Lobos Island (Isla de Lobos) is a small yet scenic islet in Fuerteventura, Spain that was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2009. The impressive coastal scenery of this island attracts many travelers, who frequently take the opportunity while in Fuerteventura to catch a ferry to Lobos Island. That is precisely what we did during our vacation in the Canary Islands.

Access to the island is regulated, so the number of visitors permitted each day is limited. This means securing both a Lobos Island permit along with a ferry ticket from Fuerteventura is necessary. Most ferry passes do not incorporate the permit, so requesting it separately is important. Conveniently, this option was found, incorporating both.

In this guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know about how to access Lobos Island by ferry or tour. You can also read through our article on Isla de Lobos, Fuerteventura to see all the places you can visit there.

Lobos Island permit

If you wish to make a journey to the island of Lobos, you must present the proper authorization since access is limited to two hundred people daily. The permit for Lobos Island, also called the LoboPass, is complimentary and non-transferable, and it’s managed independently from the ferry ticket. Another choice is to reserve this tour, which includes both a round-trip ticket on the Lobos Island ferry and the LoboPass.

Also, it is prudent to check the Lobos Island ferry schedules since there are only two trips per day, one at 10 am and the other at 2 pm. You could also go to Lobos by water taxi, which has its own timetable that you can see here.

You must submit your request on this website, and also specify both the date and time of your visit. Travelers can apply for permits to Isla de Lobos up to 5 days before their trip, so I recommend doing it as soon as possible, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Also, if you’re traveling as a group, keep in mind that you can only submit up to three requests in a single transaction.

Lobos Island from Fuerteventura – Corralejo ferry to Isla de Lobos

The ferry to Lobos Island leaves from the Port of Corralejo and arrives at the Port of Isla de Lobos. Corralejo will be uncomplicated to identify since it’s one of the top destinations to visit in Fuerteventura. Once there, you can either take the ferry to Lobos Island from Corralejo or opt for the water taxi. A third choice is to book a tour, like the one I mentioned above.

How to get to Lobos Island by ferry

The most used approach to arrive on the island from Fuerteventura is by taking the ferry to Lobos Island. If you already have the required permit, you can book a round trip ferry through Direct Ferries.

Rather than go through the process of applying for a permit and arranging ferry transportation, I recommend reserving this excursion, which was the Lobos Island tour we took. We faced no issues, and it was quite convenient since transportation and the permit were already taken care of.

Another possible tour is this experience, which is regarded as one of the best activities from Fuerteventura and covers your ferry ticket, Lobos Island permit, and 30 minutes of swimming without equipment. It’s definitely one of the best choices if you want to explore the islet’s underwater realm during your visit.

How to get to Lobos by water taxi

Another convenient way to arrive at the island from Fuerteventura is by taking the Isla de Lobos water transportation. This engine powered boat travels from the Port of Corralejo to the Isla de Lobos Port in under 10 minutes.

You can book the Lobos water transportation through this link. Bear in mind that if you do this option, you still need to request a permit, which you can do here.

Excursions to Lobos Island

You may also want to visit Lobos Island to experience all the best sights and places. In that case, I recommend this guided tour, which incorporates round-trip transportation by ferry and a guided hike through Isla de Lobos. It’s the best way to explore this island and investigate its distinct landscapes.

Ferry to Lobos Island from Lanzarote

While Fuerteventura is the main connection point to Lobos Island, another option if you aren`t visiting Fuerteventura is to take a trip from Lanzarote, specifically Puerto del Carmen. The ferry transportation options are fewer from Lanzarote, however this tourstands out as one of the superior alternatives.

If you do this day trip, you’ll depart from Puerto del Carmen and take a water taxi to Isla de Lobos. The highlight of this tour is that you’ll have the chance to see dolphins in Lanzarote as many cetaceans inhabit the waters around the island.

Take note, however, that this cruise only affords scenic views of Lobos Island`s coastline from a distance rather than permitting disembarkation. Therefore, while majestic panoramic perspectives of the protected Isla de Lobos nature reserve can be enjoyed together with dolphin and whale sightings, travelers will not roam the island itself.

Can you take the Isla de Lobos ferry without a permit?

You cannot visit the island without obtaining a Lobos Island permit. Since this is a protected natural reserve, travelers are required to secure authorization. Moreover, there is a daily limit of 200 people, so you should request a permit prior to your trip.

If you have little success obtaining a permit, you can still take a boat or kayak tour and view Lobos Island from the sea. Several excursions include snorkeling and other water activities, and my top suggestion is this catamaran tour. It leaves from Corralejo and circles the coast of Lobos Island, where you’ll have time to snorkel, swim, kayak, or paddle surf. For me, it`s one of the best things to do in Corralejo.
