Guide to visiting Drake Bay in Corcovado National Park

Below, Iโ€™ll delve into some key aspects of visiting Drake Bay in Costa Rica and what travelers can experience there:

How to get to Drake Bay, Costa Rica

The first thing worth noting is that achieving Drake Bay isnโ€™t without difficulties. Personally, I find this aspect uniquely appealing because it ensures that only those who genuinely value its natural splendor make the trek to this remote location.

The central hub, Agujitas de Drake, constitutes a small coastal village enveloped by lush rainforest. Several options exist for reachingDrake Bay, which include:

Taking a boat to Bahia Drake

Taking a boat ride is the most convenient way of getting to Drake Bay, Costa Rica. To do this, you`ll need to drive to the small town of Sierpe and leave your car parked in a designated area (generally around $6 per day). From there, you`ll board a boat that will take you across the Sierpe River to Agujitas de Drake.

Vessels leave from the Don Jorge Restaurant, so arriving plenty ahead of schedule is advised to avoid any unpredicted delays and secure lodging at Drake Bay. The voyage usually lasts around one hour.

a small boat is docked in a body of water

Keep in mind that the cost for transport on the boat may differ depending on the vessel`s captain, and payment is usually accepted in cash, either in the local currency or in US dollars. However, I advise against using dollars as it often ends up being more costly (usually around $20 per person).

Here are the scheduled departures:

  • From Sierpe to Agujitas de Drake: Daily at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • From Agujitas de Drake to Sierpe: Daily departures at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Driving to Drake Bay by car

Driving to Drake Bay is not an alternative Iโ€™d easily endorse. The journey can be rather extended, and truthfully, the road conditions leave much to be desired. Itโ€™s quite a distance, and youโ€™ll need to closely monitor the weather prediction for Drake Bay, as rainfall regularly leads to rising rivers, which can block the roads.

While some spans have been built recently, I still wouldnโ€™t propose this choice. Itโ€™s only somewhat favorable if you have a 4WD vehicle and youโ€™re traveling during the dry season, from December to April.

If by road transportation is still your choice to reach Bahรญa Drake, youโ€™ll need to journey towards La Palma and take the diversion just after Rincรณn de Osa. From that point, given the route is dry, itโ€™ll require you roughly two hours to arrive at your destination.

Getting to Drake Bay by bus and boat

If you are not afraid of heights, visiting the Stratosphere Observation Deckprovides a fun activity to engage in during the day in Las Vegas. From here, you can overlook the entire city and surrounding areas. There is also a restaurant at the top of the tower, which can create a unique date night experience in Vegas.

As one can imagine, this is quite an extensive and complex journey. Therefore, unless youโ€™re working with a restricted budget, I wouldnโ€™t advise it. Coordinating the bus schedule with the boat departure time can be tricky, and the journey itself is highly time-consuming. However, itโ€™s the sole economical choice for those who prefer to not drive.

Taking a flight to Drake Bay

For a more expeditious and convenient alternative, take into account taking a flight from San Jose to Drake Bay. Within about an hour, youโ€™ll touch down at the Drake Bay Airport, which essentially is made up of a small landing strip. This service is furnished by the airline Sansa on a regular basis, with multiple flights per month. However, itโ€™s worth noting that the costs are notably higher compared to other transportation choices. Upon arrival, youโ€™ll need to take a taxi to your hotel, typically costing around $10 per person.

Day trips to Corcovado

While I highly encourage allocating additional days for your visit, if youโ€™re restricted to just one day, consider this trip, which includes return boat transportation from Sierpe to Drake Bay and a comprehensive guided tour of Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park. Itโ€™s the best approach to make the most of your limited timeframe .

Best things to do in Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Now that youโ€™ve figured out how to arrive at Drake Bay, itโ€™s time to plan which activities you want to partake in. This will largely depend on how much time you have and the excursions that interest you.

To furnish you with an idea, reaching Drake Bay could occupy about 2 full days. Therefore, if you only have 3 days in total, it may not be worthwhile for the journey for just one day of enjoyment. On the other hand, exploring Corcovado National Park and the Drake Trail necessitates an extra 2 days, and you should add one more day if wanting to visit Caรฑo Island, which I highly recommend. In short, plan for no less than 4 nights and 5 days to truly experience all that Bahia Drake has to offer.

If you think Iโ€™m exaggerating, wait until seeing all the amazing things to do in Drake Bay. Iโ€™m convinced youโ€™ll find it challenging to fit everything you want into your itinerary!

Explore Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica covers 980,000 acres of jungle and is home to 2.5% of the worldโ€™s animal and plant types. This protected reserve stays mostly untouched, which makes thorough exploration challenging, especially during rainy periods.

As mentioned earlier, if time is limited, I suggest joining this day trip from Sierpe. However, if your itinerary has flexibility, I recommend spending extra time exploring independently. After all, given the remote location, opportunities to visit again may be rare, wouldn`t you agree?

a bird perched on top of a tree branch Visiting the Bahia Drake National Park requires mandatory guidance from an authorized person, as independent exploration is prohibited. Though areas within the park are designated for touring, the most frequented spots are the Sirena Sector and San Pedrillo Sector. I suggest allocating two days to experience the park – one day can be dedicated to exploring the Sirena region and another for exploring the San Pedrillo region. If time is constrained, this tour of the area between Sirena and San Pedrillo can be considered

These excursions are meticulously planned to maximize your time in the park. Certified guides lead the way, offering insights into the best spots for wildlife sightings โ€“ they know the park like the back of their hand. For more in-depth information about Corcovado National Park, be sure to check out our comprehensive guide.

Diving in the Caรฑo Island Biological Reserve

Caรฑo Island is a small yet fascinating island located just 12.5 miles from Bahia Drake, surrounded by a protected marine area spanning 14,300 acres. Here you`ll discover numerous intriguing species like humpback whales, several dolphin types, and abundance of sea life.

a close up view of a large body of water

Cano Island is well known as one of the top places for scuba diving in Costa Rica. If you have your certification and are eager to explore its vibrant underwater world, I suggest reserving this tour. During the excursion, you will board two scuba dives at different spots within the protected area. I received my PADI certification a year before visiting Costa Rica, so I was able to dive with no issues.

Alternatively, if you have not yet received certification, why not take advantage of the chance to become certified in one of the worldโ€™s marine paradises? With this diving course, youโ€™ll earn certification, allowing you to dive up to 60 feet anywhere on the planet. And if youโ€™re not quite prepared to take the plunge, you can still appreciate the underwater wonders with this snorkeling excursion โ€“ itโ€™s a fantastic way to experience the beauty of Caรฑo Island from a somewhat shallower depth.

Hike the Drake Trail

The Drake Trail hike is a coastal experience that begins in Agujitas de Drake and concludes at San Josecito Beach. If you`re open to an awe-inspiring journey through natural wonders, picture-perfect coastlines, and untouched landscapes, I strongly recommend dedicating a full day to this scenic Drake Bay hike.

The trail covers a distance of 5 miles in its entirety, so scheduling about 4 hours is advised to complete it. However, feel free to allot extra time for casual stops at the numerous beaches scattered along the coastline of Drake Bay – after all, it`s difficult to resist taking a dip and capturing photos in this paradise.

a walkway leading to a lush green forest

While the route is fairly straightforward, it can pose challenges in poor weather or if unprepared. There are no amenities along the way, so pack essentials like sufficient water, snacks, and sunscreen. Plus, since cell service may be patchy, itโ€™s wise to download the map beforehand, just in case.

The optimal way to hike the Drake Trail is to take a taxi to San Josecito, starting at the endpoint, and then hike back. This way, youโ€™ll finish up in Agujitas de Drake, allowing you to head straight to your lodging for a well-earned rest. Of course, if you prefer, you can opt to return via the same path or arrange for a taxi from San Josecito.

Take a dolphin and whale-watching tour

Spotting dolphins is common during boat excursions from the Drake Bay area, but to maximize chances, I strongly advise reserving this boat tour.

a large body of water filled with lots of water

Sadly, we failed to prepare ahead and missed securing our places. However, luck was on our side as we spotted dolphins on our journey to Isla de Caรฑo โ€“ it truly was a experience that will stay with me forever. Yet, I can only imagine how much richer the encounter would be on a excursion dedicated to watching whales, with a expert guide providing insights into these majestic creatures and attempts to protect them. Plus, the tour usually includes lunch with stunning views of the surroundings, making it one of the finest family-friendly tours in Drake Bay.

Take a night wildlife-watching tour

In addition to the common daytime pursuits like hiking the Drake Path or exploring the different sectors of Corcovado National Park (which close at sundown), there exists another thrilling option: the Drake Bay night tour. This experience opens up an entirely new world of wildlife-spotting chances under the protection of darkness.

If this idea intrigues you and youโ€™re up for an adventure, consider this activity โ€“ an exhilarating 2-hour night walk led by an expert guide searching for the most awe-inspiring wildlife in Costa Rica.

Visit Agujitas

Beyond the organized excursions, one of my top recommendations when visiting Bahรญa Drake is taking some time to explore the charming town of Agujitas. Many travelers simply use it as a base and overlook its unique character and the chance to immerse themselves in local life.

motorcycles parked in front of a beach

Although Agujitas may lack paved roads and shopping centers, it makes up for it with secluded beaches where you can purchase fresh fruit, as well as abundant natural surroundings yet untouched. Don`t pass up the chance to go on a short hike to see the suspension bridge, the most iconic structure in town. While Playa Colorada, the main beach near Drake Bay, may not be the most scenic, it offers a cozy place to relax and appreciate nature. Just be sure to check with locals before swimming, as mischievous crocodiles sometimes enter the sea near the mouth of the Agujitas River.

Most hotels in the town of Bahรญa Drake can be found on the main street along with restaurants, supermarkets, and travel agencies. However, the town only consists of around 4 or 5 sandy streets altogether, so it does not take much time to explore everything it offers.

Go tubing in the Agujas River

The Agujitas River in Drake Bay delivers an ideal setting for a relaxing stroll along its tranquil waters. Surrounded by lush rainforest and the symphony of nature, the scenery is truly spectacular. For an thrilling experience, I highly recommend embarking on this tubing tour, which is one of the most enjoyable activities in Drake Bay.

As you float along, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to observe fascinating species, such as amphibians and snakes, making it an excellent choice for those seeking excitement.

Kayaking in the Tรฉrraba Sierpe National Wetland

The Tรฉrraba Sierpe National Wetland represents the largest wetlands spanning the entire Pacific coast of the Americas, and trust me, you don`t want to miss the opportunity to partake in a kayak ride across its serene waters. This guided excursion covers transportation by watercraft to the starting point along with kayak rental and life vests for your reassurance.

Go horseback riding

If you are unaware, you can also climb into the saddle and ride horses on Playa Colorada in Agujitas de Drake. This multi-hour excursion incorporates a scenic horseback ride along the coastline, followed by a journey through the forest up to a breathtaking natural waterfall.

  • Playa San Josecito: With golden sands and crystal clear water, this beach is perfect for exploring underwater life in Drake Bay through snorkeling. Located 2.3 miles from town, you wonโ€™t find large crowds of tourists here. Getting there requires crossing four rivers, so I strongly advise using a 4×4 vehicle to save time and avoid unexpected issues. A short 1,500-foot path leads to the beach once you arrive. You can also take a boat, but you need to check with locals about availability and schedules. Keep an eye out for scarlet macaws and monkeys along the way, but be cautious as they may try to take your belongings.
  • Las Caletas Beach: Found 2.5 miles from Agujitas de Drake, Las Caletas Beach provides the perfect spot for a refreshing swim. Hikers exploring the Drake Trail may encounter it along the way .

Here are some noteworthy restaurants in Drake Bay:

Each dish is meticulously prepared with an innovative touch. With stunning ocean views and excellent service, itโ€™s a popular spot in town, so plan ahead to reserve your table.

  • Casa el Tortugo Restaurant: This eatery is located within a cabin complex somewhat further from the town center. It provides a slightly more upscale dining experience, with great prices and an assortment of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner .

Additional tips for visiting Drake Bay

Now that the Drake Bay adventure has been arranged, here are some useful tips and recommendations to make the most of the trip to Costa Rica:

  • While the destination of Drake Bay may be somewhat more remote compared to other tourist locations, everything needed is available there. Therefore, only essential items need to be brought. A minimum of three supermarkets exist for any shopping requirements along with several dining establishments. Also present is a small pharmacy where prices are equal for locals and visitors.

  • Remember, the rules clearly state that you must be accompanied by an authorized guide when exploring Corcovado National Park, even if you arrange permits independently. Also, you must strictly adhere to the regulations of Bahรญa Drake to avoid penalties or expulsion from the protected area. Activities like smoking, using disposable plastic bottles, feeding animals, or straying from trails are strictly forbidden.
