Is Santorini Safe?

Is Santorini safe to visit in 2021?

Yes, Santorini provides a safe destination generally. Of course, dangers exist everywhere and Santorini has its share of unusual accidents: falling debris, aggressive donkeys, risky behavior by youth operating personal watercraft. And as anywhere, vehicle incidents pose the biggest risk in Santorini. Always wear a seat belt, avoid driving after alcohol consumption, touring vineyards by vehicle, giving local buses a wide berth when walking (many areas share the road), and renting motorbikes, ATVs or scooters only if regularly operated at home. The jet ski excursion to the volcano remains one of the highly rated activities on Santorini yet jet skis can become hazardous participating in reckless conduct.

An Extra Word About Motorbikes and Scooters

This is considered the primary way persons (at minimum persons I know) sustain injuries while traveling. I’ve had friends, family, readers, and numerous people I’ve met while traveling that required serious medical attention riding a motorcycle or scooter when they weren’t accustomed to operating one. Actually, I cannot envision someone who went to the hospital while traveling where a motorbike or scooter wasn’t the cause. The roads in Santorini are narrow, have lots of loose gravel, and locals drive swiftly and carelessly. This is not the place to learn how to operate a motorbike.

Is Santorini safe at night?

Wherever there is alcohol, there is some risk. Usual precautions apply but Santorini has very few problems with fights, violence, drugs, or organized criminal activity. The biggest risk at night is walking home down the caldera after too many drinks. (I’m only half-joking.)

Is Santorini safe for single travelers and female travelers?

Once again, affirmative, Santorini does offer a safe ambiance with little outright criminal actions. Solo female travelers will feel secure throughout the day in every area of the island. At night, common-sense precautions are still advised. If easy access to the nightlife spots in Fira while lodging at a nearby hotel is preferred, these options may be suitable: Cosmopolitan Hotel (luxurious hotel on the caldera a 2 minute walk from clubs) and Petini’s Place (pleasant budget hotel a 1 minute walk from clubs). Both hotels are a brief stroll down busy pedestrian lanes from the main Fira nightlife spots like 2 Brothers, Koo Club, Kira Thira Jazz Club, Tropical, and Enigma.
