Several airlines have announced new direct flights between major US cities and the recently established Tulum Airport (TQO), located on the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Officially named Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, it opened for domestic flights on December 1, 2023.Β

Nonstop international service to and from Tulum will begin as early as March 28, 2024, via the following airlines:Β

  • American Airlines – Starting March 28, American Airlines will offer one daily year-round direct flight from both Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) and Miami, Florida (MIA). Additionally, it will provide two daily year-round flights from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas (DFW).Β
  • Delta Air Lines – Also beginning March 28, Delta Air Lines will operate year-round daily service from Atlanta, Georgia (ATL).Β
  • JetBlue – On June 13, JetBlue will begin offering one daily direct flight from New York City, New York (JFK).Β
  • United Airlines – Beginning March 31, United Airlines will provide a weekly total of 22 nonstop flights from Newark, New Jersey (EWR); Houston, Texas (IAH); and Chicago, Illinois (ORD). United will also offer daily seasonal service from Los Angeles, California (LAX) starting on May 23.Β

These flights are currently for sale and will minimize travelers’ time in reaching their destination.Β

Prior to the opening of TQO, tourists visiting Tulum from the United States had to fly into CancΓΊn International Airport, then travel 2+ hours south via ground transit methods from CancΓΊn to Tulum.

Comparatively, Tulum International Airport is only a 40-minute drive from the city center, which can be accessed via ADO bus connections and private transfers. Car rentals are also available at the airport through agencies including Europcar, Hertz, and MEX Rent A Car.Β

Convenience is one of many reasons to visit Tulum. In a written statement, Patrick Quayle, United Airlines’ senior vice president of Network Planning and Alliances, praised its great beaches and restaurants, as well as the area’s rich history and natural beauty. β€œTulum is at the top of a lot of travel lists,” he commented.Β

Tulum is also in the path of the recently inaugurated Maya Train. The multi-billion dollar project spans more than 900 miles and connects several key Mexico destinations, including Cancun, Valladolid, MΓ©rida, and Campeche. Maya Train stations also appear in Tulum and at the Tulum Airport.
