9 Tips to Travel on a Budget

a book that is sitting on top of a table

Set Flight Trackers to Secure Affordable Flights

Websites like Airfare Comparison or Travel Cost Monitoring take the work off your hands. Simply input your departure city and destination to track flight costs as they vary daily.

Be sure to have email alerts enabled because Airfare Watchdog will email you each time your flight’s price decreases. Act quickly, though, because that affordable price is temporary.

Cook Meals at Your Destination

Dining out is one of the swiftest approaches to reducing your travel funds. Opting out of upscale sit-down eateries can help save a significant amount when exploring your destination.

Market costs often suit travelers on any budget. Purchase staples in bulk and cook where you`re staying to make meals for the whole week. Affordable basics to shop for include rice, bread, pasta, and fresh fruits and veggies.

Eat Street Food

Eat street food when you don`t feel like preparing meals to save money on nourishment at your destination. Depending on the location, street food can sometimes be purchased for as little as $1 per serving.

Street food is also exponentially less expensive in large metropolitan cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix. Just be sure to have cash available as many street food vendors don’t accept card payments.

Take Local Transportation

Cut transportation costs in half by using local transit. Avoid paying additional rideshare app fees and tipping. Opt for the local bus or train instead of a private ride.

It is always wise to verify the distance you need to walk between your starting point and destination before using local transportation. Walking is one of the most cost-effective ways to get around.

Stay in Hostels to Save Money

Save money on lodging by staying in hostels. For readers unfamiliar with hostels, this type of accommodation is among the most affordable options available. Most rooms have dormitory-style beds with anywhere from 4 to 20 beds per room.

Hostels also offer shared kitchen areas, allowing for easy meal preparation and cost savings. Check out Sky’s article for all the details on staying safe at hostels.

Consider Work Exchange Programs

a person standing on top of a snow covered slope

Work exchange programs are among the best ways to save money abroad. Hosts offer free lodging and sometimes even meals without cost in exchange for a few hours of work each day.

Popular work exchange jobs involve hostel work, au pair positions, teaching abroad, restaurant jobs, and house sitting. Workaway,Worldpackers, and WWOOF are among the top volunteer exchange programs available.

Even though some people worry if hostels are safe, the truth is that they’re truly the best solution for many types of travelers. But, if it’s not what you’re looking for, it can be a nightmare.

Refrain from Buying Souvenirs

One of the best budget travel recommendations I can provide is to refrain from purchasing souvenirs. This may be difficult for shopaholic travelers. However, souvenirs truly waste money if you’re on a limited budget.

I recommend taking many photos instead. This way, you have lasting memories of your destination (and more cash in your pockets too).

Travel With a Tent and Stay in Campgrounds

people on a grassy hillside

Why pay prices comparable to tourists for lodging when camping at half the cost is an option? Travel with a tent to conserve far more money on accommodation than imaginable.

You have options to stay in reasonably priced established campgrounds at your destination or on free public land in areas like North America. I utilize the iOverlander application whenever I take a road journey to camp free of charge on Bureau of Land Management property.

Only Drink During Happy Hour

Spend as minimal funds as possible on alcohol by drinking only during happy hour specials. Most beverages are discounted then and several places even offer buy-one-get-one offers.
