Essential Backpacking Checklist
Backpacking Pack
After significant research and real-world testing spanning 100+ hours, I determined the most suitable backpacking backpacks for this year.
The Osprey Eja and its men’s version, the Osprey Exos, were ranked the top choice. See my full review of the Osprey Eja for more details.
The various sizes and gender-oriented models of the backpack result in a near-custom match. Even its heaviest version weighs under 3 lbs., yet it exhibits strong durability. What`s more, the pack is 100% constructed with recycled materials and wields a PFC/PFAS-free durable water resistance.
🎒 Luggage Choices: There are many individual factors to consider when selecting luggage. Read my guide on how to choose a backpacking pack for more info!
Backpack Rain Cover
Some backpacking bags come equipped with a rain covering, similar to the Gregory Maven — which I also assessed and examined. However, this is not applicable to all brands and designs, like the Osprey Eja / Exos, my “top overall” backpack selection. Be sure to procure a rain cover independently. They’re compact, lightweight, and accessible in numerous sizes.
Backpacking Tent and Footprint
The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent is worthwhile considering for wilderness excursions requiring lightweight yet resilient shelter. Weighing only 3 pounds 2 ounces, it ranks among the most portable tents while maintaining double ripstop nylon construction for sturdiness. Its seams also feature PVC and VOC-free sealing to withstand poor weather. Additional storage features, vestibule areas, and dual entry doors further its convenience.
The eight Big Agnes Dirt Dagger UL stakes and four awning guylines were incorporated, as was the rain fly. However, the coordinating tent ground covering is offered independently. I firmly suggest this extra acquisition to expand the life expectancy of your backpacking tent.
Sleeping Bag
The Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20 Sleeping Bag is accessible in both female and male versions. Experts apparently agree that it stands as one of the superior fabricated sleeping bags offered.
The sleeping bag is durable and has a superb warmth-to-weight ratio, being as little as 2 lbs. 6 oz. It’s also reasonably compact thanks to its included compression stuff sack. Plus, the sleeping bag is highly eco-friendly, being down-free and made with recycled materials.
Sleeping Pad
It’s made with recycled materials and is available in several sizes, ranging from petite to double (which is what my husband and I use). All models are hardy, light, and compact. The sleeping pad comes with a stuff sack, as well as an easy-to-use inflation sack.
Backpacking Stove
The speed cook stove is absolutely fundamental to your backpacking list. It’s remarkably tiny with proportions matching a large mouth water container. It also weighs just 13.1 oz. and typically, it boils 1L of water in 3 min. 20 sec. Preparing coffee and rehydrating freeze-dried meals has not ever been simpler.
Cooking Fuel
It should be noted that the Jetboil flash cooking system does not come with fuel. Be sure to obtain a compatible Jetboil Jetpower fuel canister separately. The 3.53 fluid ounce size is suggested since it is compact and weighs only seven ounces.
“(269)”” ”
In addition, the ocean floor below Los Gigantes is just as intriguing, measuring approximately 100 feet deep and attracting many scuba divers and fishermen. If diving is not desired, you can take a Tenerife whale-watching tour since several of the premier excursions depart from Los Gigantes.
Cook Set
This collapsible cooking setup by Sea to Summit is a lightweight essential for backpacking preparation. The nested set weighs only 14.5 oz. and features a 1.4L pot, bowl, and mug constructed of food-grade, heat-resistant silicone. Those who solely rely on pre-packaged dehydrated meals may not need the pot. However, it’s a great tool for those who dehydrate their own backpacking food.
Spork
Experienced backpackers likely understand the struggle of emptying into freeze-dried food packages. But there is no need to roll up your sleeves with this light, lengthy spork by Sea to Summit. It is constructed with resilient, heat-resistant aluminum alloy, weighs merely 0.4 oz., and steps 8.5 in. in length.
Freeze-Dried Meals
Here is a link to view firepots on REI:
I swear by these nutrient-dense, freeze-dried nourishments from Firepot. The company delivers delicious vegan choices including smoky tomato paella, chili non carne with rice, Tuscan stew, and mac n’ greens. Each package serves two — but they’re so tasty, that I regularly eat one myself!
Water Bottle
A 32-ounce environmentally-conscious wide-mouth plastic bottle is a fundamental object used during hiking excursions. These bottles manufactured using 50% reused plastic are free of BPA, BPS and phthalates. The expansive opening makes filling it with ice cubes and filtered water straightforward. Additionally, this style of bottle weighs only 6.25 ounces.
Water Filter
I really enjoy using my Sawyer Squeeze water filtration kit. The tool includes two 32 ounce water bags, cleaning equipment, accessories for gravity or inline use, and the filter itself which rids over 99.99999% of bacteria and protozoa from water.
The system is extremely user-friendly and requires little work. Simply fill one of the pockets at a fresh water source. Then twist on the filter and squeeze the purified water into another included pocket or your water bottle. This essential tool weighs just 3 ounces.
Water Purification Tablets
I’ve never had an issue with my Sawyer Squeeze water filter system, but obstruction might happen. Be planned by holding individually wrapped Katadyn Micropur pills in your first aid kit. one tab purifies 1L of water, removing microorganisms, bacterium, protozoa, cysts, and infections. Note that these tablets require 4 hours to achieve maximum potency.
Biodegradable Soap
Sea to Summit Wilderness Wash liquid cleanser is focused and flexible. Use it to tidy dishes and sweat-soaked outerwear from trekking, and for individual hygiene.
It’s biodegradable, phosphate-free, and pH balanced. However, be certain to leave no trace! Transport water at least 200 feet from natural sources, then pour wastewater into an 8-inch hole. This practice will help protect the environment, native species, and yourself when out in the wilderness.
Waterproof Stuff Sacks
In my assessment, this light backpack accessory does not need to be overly intricate. The Outdoor Products 3-pack of waterproof bags is very affordable and gets the job done. Use the varying volumes to organize and further seal your backpacking kit from moisture.
I also use these when in bear country. Simply store your food in a waterproof bag, then hang it from a tree using a 50-ft. nylon cord and carabiner. Be sure to select a tree that’s at least 200 ft. from your campsite. The bag should also hang at least 10 ft. from the tree trunk and 15 ft. from the ground.
First Aid Kit
Including a first aid kit is among the Ten Essentials commonly packed for backpacking trips. But will you remember to verify its contents? Remove that from your to-do list with this well-supplied kit from Adventure Medical Kits.
- What Lost Luggage Coverage Entails: Protection against covered airline losses or stolen items. I aim to ensure my insurance coverage policy limit exceeds the monetary value of the things I take so I can receive full reimbursement.
SPF Lip Balm
Protect your lips from damaging rays and dry conditions with this moisturizing sunscreen lip cream by Sun Bum. The three-pack comes in several tropical flavors, all of which feature SPF 30, aloe, and vitamin E.
Sunscreen
You could always purchase a travel-scale bottle of sun-care product for hiking. Sun Bum manufactures a 3-oz container of SPF 50 sunscreen lotion that’s oil-free, water-resistant, and eco-friendly.
However, I recommend obtaining Sun Bum’s SPF 30 sunscreen facial stick. It weighs less, is more compact (approximately the size of a lighter), doesn’t have the danger of leaking, and awards more applications. Apply the roll-on item to your face and any other exposed part of your body.
Trowel
Waste containment bags can be an option for carrying out your waste, but may solely be required if traversing difficult terrain. However, utilizing a trowel for digging cat holes is typically preferred. I suggest The Deuce #2 by TheTentLab for its remarkably light weight of merely 0.6 oz. It’s additionally constructed with durable aluminum and can even be recycled via a standard aluminum recycling container.
Multi-tool
The Leatherman Wingman multipurpose apparatus is a necessity on your backpacking preparations. It transforms into 14 tools that can assist repair gear, bolster first aid initiatives, and serve other functions in the great outdoors. Tools incorporate plyers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, scissors, a bottle and tin opener, and a partially-serrated pocket knife.
Headlamp
The Black Diamond Astro 300 Headlamp is budget friendly, efficient, and adaptable. Its single button cycles through three settings. These embrace its maximum output at 300 lumens, medium at 150 lumens, and low at 6 lumens. This headlamp is also waterproof, and trustworthy even in heavy rain and sleet.
Compass
Many rely on navigation systems when trail hiking. But like water purification methods, it’s important to have a backup plan for something so critical. Always carry a printed map and a precise orienteering device, such as the Suunto A-10. This baseplate compass is precise, user-friendly, and weighs only 1.06 oz.
Satellite Messenger
The Garmin inReach Mini 2 device listed on this complete backpacking kit is one of the more expensive items. However, you will be thankful to have invested in the technology should you ever require its use.
This device can function as a tracker to help avoid confusion when navigating unfamiliar routes or away from established trails. It also allows for two-way contact with loved ones back home. There are also interactive emergency capabilities available 24/7 (with an active satellite subscription). Additionally, the unit is impact and water-resistant, and its internal lithium-ion battery maintains a charge for up to fourteen days.
Other Backpacking Essentials to Pack
Cedar Key and Palm Beach are both inviting and offer plenty to keep one engaged, regardless of personal interests. Some other excellent small Florida towns include Havana,Seaside, and Miramar Beach.
- Waterproof matches or windproof lighter
- Fire starter
- Protective covering
- A repair kit containing super glue, a needle, thread, and duct tape which may suffice depending on the length of the trip.
- Hydration compartment
- Prepackaged coffee servings
- Energy chews
- Flavor enhancers collected from dining establishments (collect these flavor boosters when dining out!)
- Small quick-dry towel
- Plastic bags that seal (for garbage disposal, water protection, etc.)
- Toilet paper
- Menstrual cup
- Comb
- Hair ties
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Hand sanitizer
- Prescription meds
- Prescription glasses

- Permit
- Cards / cash
- Personal ID
- Insurance card
- Car keys
- Waterproof cellphone case (take screenshots of directions and photos of guidebook pages. Also download a GPS map – I advise using AllTrails+)
Additional Backpacking Gear
Trekking Poles
Hiking poles may not be a necessary item on your backpacking packing list. However, they could be worth including depending on an individual`s abilities or preferences, as well as the landscape. Fortunately, the Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Poles contribute quite little pack weight, being merely 9.8 oz. They’re durable, collapse into a compact size, and are even made with recycled materials.
Backpacking Chair
Ultralight backpackers and thru-hikers may opt to not carry a backpacking chair. However, those prioritizing relaxation won`t mind hauling the Helinox Chair Zero. Weighing just 1 lb. when folded, it takes up a space similar in size to a 48-ounce water bottle. Stow it externally on your pack to unwind around camp in the evenings.
Pillow
Some may view the Sea to Summit Aeros pillow as unnecessary bulk to bear. However, for others the weight of 2.1 oz is a reasonable trade-off for an undisturbed night`s slumber. Furthermore, when deflated it compresses into an exceptionally compact size, roughly half the dimensions of a water bottle.
Bear Spray
For many, this item can go unnoticed. But don’t skip buying deterrent spray for bears if hiking in certain regions, particularly those inhabited by grizzlies. Canisters are efficient and leak-proof — but be aware of where you store them.
It would be best if my husband and I had not unintentionally slammed our truck bed cover on the can during our initial backpacking trip!
Action Camera
Share your adventures with the GoPro HERO9 kit! It comes with a lightweight, waterproof camera that captures excellent pictures and 5K videos. It weighs just 11.2 oz. and fits in the palm of your hand.
For enhanced dependability, connect it to one of the fitted mounts. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is likewise incorporated, however I propose obtaining an additional power to record even more content. An extra storage cards may also come in handy.

The iconic Capitol Records building is on Vine Street in Hollywood, merely one block north of famed Hollywood Boulevard, and is a brisk 5-minute walk from Kimpton Everly Hotel. This 4-star accommodation generally charges $50-$100 less per night compared to nearby comparable lodgings.

Clothing for a Summer Backpacking Trip
The weather will greatly impact what clothing to bring on your backpack travels. Obviously, this relies on season and location.
Where I reside in the US state of Colorado, summer seasons often bring a wide range of temperatures. Even in July, my attire regularly needs to accommodate 30-80°F on treks through mountain regions.
Consider your destination, research the predicted weather conditions, and prepare accordingly. The weight of what is packed is a factor, but in my view, having more layers is preferable to feeling cold. However, do not pack changed clothing except for additional underwear and potentially a t-shirt. Instead, do laundry on trips spanning multiple days of backpacking!
Now, here’s a brief clothing checklist for summer backpacking trips:
- Moisture-wicking underwear
- Moisture-wicking t-shirt
- Quick-drying, water-resistant pants/shorts
- Long sleeve shirt (for sun + bug protection)
- Lightweight fleece
- Rain jacket
- Boots/hiking shoes suited for the terrain
- Comfortable shoes for camping (e.g. flip flops, slip-ons; optional)
- Synthetic/wool hiking socks
- Sun buff/sun hat
Don’t yet have all this equipment or want to upgrade? See my product recommendations below:
Convertible Hiking Pants
Columbia`s pants for hiking that can be converted are offered in many dimensions and for both women`s and men`s types. Possessing zip-off legs, I really like my set for their flexibility. These trousers also offer UPF 50 and are blemish and water-resistant.
UPF Long Sleeve Shirt
The nightlife in Charleston, especially in the downtown area, is lively, with many options for entertainment. King Street is a highlight with cocktail bars like Dalila’s and Proof attracting crowds. Sports bars around include Charleston Beer Works,Cutty’s, and Uptown Social. Microbreweries in the area that are popular destinations contain Palmetto Brewing Co and Baker and Brewer.Music Farm is known for live musical performances
Rain Jacket
The following text contains an HTML element with a link promoting a REI product page: ”
I acquired the women’s REI Co-op Rainier rain jacket years ago and to this day, it remains among my favorite components of backpacking gear. The light-weight rain jacket is additionally available in a men’s version.
Both feature a recycled ripstop nylon exterior, which provides protection from rain and wind up to 60 mph. Its interior is breathable and pit zips allow for even greater airflow. Plus, the jacket can be folded up into its pocket and can be easily stored in any backpack.
Clothing for a Winter Backpacking Trip
In most areas, winter backpacking will necessitate significantly more attire. Pack insulated, water-resistant layers and accessories from reputable brands within the outdoor industry. These companies prioritize performance at a much higher level than those focusing on fashion.
Below is a basic clothing checklist for winter backpacking:
- Moisture-wicking underwear
- Base layer bottoms
- Fleece pants
- Snow pants
- Base layer long-sleeve shirt
- Insulated, water-resistant winter jacket
- Insulated, waterproof hiking boots
- Comfortable camp shoes (optional)
- Synthetic/wool socks
- Gloves/mittens
- Warm hat
- Warm buff
- Gaiters
- Traction device
Below are some individual clothing picks for winter. These articles will keep you feeling warm and safe in cold conditions:
Base Layer Bottoms
Keep warm with these merino wool bottoms by Smartwool, available in women`s and men`s styles. Trust that these aren`t your average leggings or long underwear. They possess an interweave pattern that enhances heat and breathability. Plus, Smartwool prioritizes durability. It recycles items and sources from manufacturers that capture carbon emissions.
Base Layer Long Sleeve Shirt
This women’s thermal base layer top by Smartwool perfectly fits the advised bottoms. There’s also a men’s version available. Both are made with sustainably resourced merino wool, supplying warmth, convenience, and breathability.
Convertible Winter Jacket
Weather on multi-day or even day hikes can change quickly. Be ready for varying conditions with the women`s jacket or the men`s Whirlibird IV interchange winter coat by Columbia.
These models have a 3-in-1 design. Wear the waterproof shell, the thermal insulated liner, or both depending on the elements. The jacket is also breathable, has several pockets, and features that make it suitable for skiing and snowboarding, too.
Waterproof Hiking Boots
I own a pair of robust women’s hiking boots — as does my best friend. My husband and brother have the rugged model because truly, I advise everybody to purchase these footwear. They are the best hiking shoes I have encountered after many years of outside exploration.
I really enjoy how these hiking shoes are fully waterproof yet let air flow freely. They feel comfortable right out of the box and have a long-lasting, grippy sole. It`s no wonder these shoes win awards year after year for their quality.
Traction Device
Want a thriving backpacking trip in winter conditions? Pack a dependable traction system — emphasis on dependable. Kahtoola microspikes may be costlier than competing merchandise, but they are deserving of the investment.
Each foot contains twelve 3⁄8-in. stainless steel prongs. They’ll keep you stable even on steep, icy terrain. And unlike similar microspikes, they don’t accumulate clumps of wet, heavy snow thanks to their flexible chains. Enjoy backpacking year-round with this essential piece of gear.
Backpacking Packing Tips
Follow the 20% Rule
People often inquire about whether a specific weight is too heavy for backpacking. Ultimately, your maximum pack weight depends on your personal abilities and skills — as well as the quality of your backpack. A well-designed pack is made to transfer most of the weight to your hips. This allows your legs to support the load more than your upper body.
However, experts generally recommend one`s backpacking gear not exceed 20% of their body weight.
Of course, fitness levels also play a role. As someone who is reasonably active, weighs 100 lbs., and finds carrying 20 lbs. to be comfortable for a time, anything heavier quickly becomes strenuous.
Invest in Gear Wisely
Now that you’ve calculated the weights, you may worry some gear outweighs your limit. Here are the items I advise upgrading primarily:
- Backpacking pack – As noted, a quality pack will facilitate carrying your load more comfortably. It may also help reduce your base weight. The ultralight Osprey Eja and Osprey Exos weigh as little as 2.597 lbs and 2.695 lbs respectively.
- Backpacking tent – This is one of the heavier products carried while backpacking. Consider choosing a modern, lightweight model for comfort such as the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent, which should withstand years of use if budget allows.
- Sleeping bag – Weight variance isn’t as substantial for sleeping bags. Still, an inexpensive product won’t retain heat as well as higher-quality options. When upgrading, opt for a model with robust insulation compared to its mass.
Meal Plan Like a Pro
Overpacking food is a common mistake made by inexperienced backpackers. Yes, always carry an extra day`s worth of nutrition as a precaution.
However, diligently organize your meals and caloric intake – do not simply pack the entire bag of trail mix and an unnecessary number of energy bars.
Food selection and preparation when backpacking also warrants attention. Dehydrated, energy-dense meals and snacks in single-serving portions are suitable options. Additionally, it is wise to consider how rations are contained – resealable bags allow controlled portions.
Load Your Pack Properly
This is a crucial step for comfort. However, it will somewhat vary depending on your backpack and preferences. Generally, you should first slide your fluid holder into place. Then, load the bottom of your backpack. Place your sleeping bag at the base, providing a bit of cushion to your lower back area.
Next, position your heavier, compact items in the center (e.g. backpacking stove and fuel, food bag). Stuff your garments in the open gaps – no need to worry about wrinkles in the wilderness!
Position frequently used items toward the top of your pack. I like placing my first aid kit, headlamp, and camera gear in this location, allowing easy access. Lastly, fill the accessory pockets. I’ll usually put my phone in the lid pouch, a snack in one hip belt pocket, and my water bottle in the side pocket.

Safety First
Prioritizing safety is my most essential backpacking suggestion. Yes, you worked tremendously hard to train, pack up your gear, drive to the trailhead, etc. However, weather conditions, injury and sickness, and so on are beyond your control.
I’ve had to forgo an adventure occasionally due to such circumstances. There is no shame in turning back and trying again another day. Happily, the trail isn`t going anywhere!
