Crete Hotels – Tips & Info

  • Our Favorite Locations to Stay in Crete: One of our preferred cities in Crete is Chania, a romantic coastal town filled with charm. We also enjoy Rethymno – nearly as spectacular but significantly less crowded by travelers. Elounda is a string of idyllic beachside luxury resorts. Heraklio is a mid-sized city, overflowing with character and authentic local culture; Knossos (just outside Heraklio) is the prime historical site on the island. Agios Nikolaos, 60 km to the east of Heraklio, is low-key, relaxing, and less occupied by visitors than numerous other popular Crete coastal resorts.
  • Elafonisi (around a 90-minute drive from Chania) has the best beach on Crete and is among my favorite beaches anywhere.
  • Our Suggested Itineraries: For stays of 3 to 5 days in Crete, we advise focusing mainly on Chania with a visit to Heraklio and Knossos. For a one week trip in Crete, we propose: 3 days in Chania (with day trips to nearby beaches and attractions), 3 days in Agios Nikolaos or Elounda, and 1 day in Heraklio (with a visit to Knossos). For a two week visit to Crete, take time to explore the wonderful coastal towns along the south coast and the interior villages of central Crete.
  • Some of our preferred places to eat in Crete are Chrisostomos in Chania, Tamam in Chania, Avli in Rethymno, Peskesi in Heraklio, Kastella in Heraklio, Karnagio in Agios Nikolaos, Ntounias in Drakona, 22km south of Chania, and Gianni’s Taverna (aka The Tavern of John in Kiparissos, 25km south of Heraklio)

Staying in Chania

a patio area with tables, chairs, and umbrellas

Chania is a excellent city that possesses a wonderful Old Town. It features tavernas situated around the crescent-shaped waterfront as well as hotels and shops on the streets and alleys set back from the water’s edge. A nice beach can be reached on foot from the city center, and even better ones require just a short bus ride. Chania serves as a good base if one wants to do the Samaria Gorge or make a day trip to the beaches of western Crete (such as Balos or Elafonisi). That said, it is easy to spend 2 or 3 days here without going much farther than the great traditional eateries located around the heart of the town. All of the hotels listed below are positioned in the wonderful Chania Old Town and surrounded by shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes

Staying in Rethymno

a small boat is docked in a harbor

The town of Rethymno shares some similarities with Chania but is smaller in scale and less developed for tourism. The village has a rich history dating back to the Minoan era, as seen through monuments representing great empires throughout its Old Town and harbor, for instance a formidable Venetian fortress and domed Ottoman mosques. Rethymno Beach lies to the east of the marina, a pleasant walk from the Old Town. A brief drive farther east leads to even more soft, sandy resort beaches at Spilies and Bali. During summer there are direct ferries to Santorini twice weekly, making it a convenient stopover if traveling to the Cyclades islands

Staying in Heraklio

boats floating on top of a body of water

Heraklio provides a glimpse of genuine Cretan life that some of the more tourist-focused towns lack, with an authentic character and local flavor. The city is home to Crete`s most notable museum and the renowned historical site of Knossos lies nearby. Those catching an early ferry to Santorini may find themselves spending a night in Heraklio regardless of initial plans.

Staying in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda

a large body of water with a bridge over it

Agios Nikolaos remains as my second favorite town in Crete and serves as a good base for exploring eastern Crete. It’s a beautiful town with a pedestrian-friendly waterfront area. Good beaches are located nearby, and the popular small town of Elounda is attainable by public transit for a short ride away and houses many of the top resorts in opulence located in Crete. This region makes for a great place to spend a few days unwinding and relaxing as it`s much less busy than Chania, Rethymno, or Heraklio.
