Where to Stay in Porto: A Complete Guide for First Timers

Porto was our final destination on our initial Portugal excursion, and we found it to be equally charming as its affable rival to the south, Lisbon.

Porto exhibits somewhat of a contradiction in that, on one hand, it feels very young and lively (especially at night) while simultaneously feeling older and more historic than most of Lisbon. Probably because Lisbon was leveled by an earthquake less than 300 years ago.

Porto, similar to numerous cities in Europe, is positioned on both banks of a river with colorful structures extending up the hills on either river edge.

The Douro River – which flows outward into the Douro Valley, where the grapes utilized to magically transform into port wine are cultivated – glimmers in the sun, and has been the lifeblood of the city for centuries.

Exploring Porto`s cobblestoned Medieval roads below the cathedral, finding colorful storefronts and beautiful blue and white azulejos tiles, savoring the exceptional cuisine and wines, abundantly clarifies why the city has enthralled visitors globally.

Porto is a relatively small and compressed city, but deciding where to lodge in Porto can still be a challenge. The city has several central neighborhoods, and each of them comes with their own unique charms and list of tradeoffs.

That’s where this guide comes in.

In this comprehensive guide, we’re going to introduce you to four neighborhoods that would make excellent bases for exploring Porto.

For each neighborhood, we’ll delve deeply into the benefits and drawbacks of staying there, some neighborhood highlights we discovered and appreciated (and think you might too), and a collection of cool places to stay that we’ve compiled based on our own preferences.

The result – we hope – is a thorough guide to the best places to stay in Porto that will help you make a decision and find the right place to stay for your style, group size, and budget.

Where to Stay in Porto: A Complete Guide to the Best Areas to Stay

We believe the best approach for selecting a place to stay (in any city) is initially choosing a neighborhood and then picking a hotel, guesthouse, or apartment within that neighborhood.

Below is a breakdown of the best neighborhoods in Porto along with some accommodation recommendations within each area catering to different budget levels.

At the end of the day, most people, around 90%, will likely pick between Ribeira and Baixa, which are considered the two finest options for being central to all the major attractions and other activities and sights (and eats and drinks) in Porto.

Here’s how we’d think about that decision. 

If exploring Porto for the first time and desiring the most charming area, stay in Ribeira, which is the neighborhood at the bottom of the hill alongside the Douro River.

While Ribeira is undeniably beautiful, it tends to be crowded with visitors at all hours and may not provide the most authentic local experience.

If a charming centrally located hotel is wanted (with rooms containing river views), stay at Gran Cruz House, which is undoubtedly the most interesting place to lodge in the neighborhood (in our opinion, at any rate). The Exmo. Hotel is a close second choice.

Those more interested in nightlife, dining, and entertainment may prefer to stay inBaixa (also called “Sé”, named for the cathedral), near Praça do Município.

Set higher up the hill from Ribeira, this area where we resided features grand churches decorated with azuelos plus breweries, coffeehouses, dining establishments, and additional attractions.

If you’re seeking a boutique contemporary hotel, stay at either Chic & Basic Gravity or Hotel Moon and Sun. If you’re looking for outstanding value, consider the Poet’s Inn or the Passenger Hostel.

For what it’s worth, we decided to lodge in Baixa because it was a better value and it was closer to many of the places I had bookmarked before our trip as places I wanted to visit. It turned out to be great, and we’d happily stay there again.

If you’re operating with a restricted budget and seeking an affordable location, lodge in Bonfim, which lies east of Baixa and offers a better variety of cost-effective lodging options. As a bonus, you’ll leave behind over 80 percent of visitors when venturing eastward, as most individuals spend their entire trip between Ribeira and Baixa. Allegro 508 would be our top choice here because it’s a small, charming guesthouse providing good value.

Ribeira: The Overall Best Place to Stay in Porto

Ribeira stands out as one of Porto`s most vibrant and historic districts. It also represents the city`s most iconic postcard view.

Encompassing the Medieval harbor and riverfront, the central neighborhood is best known for its colorful façades and many busy restaurants and bars overlooking the Douro River.

Wandering the winding Medieval lanes, past 18th-century townhouses and the harbor dotted with many historic fishing boats, Ribeira evokes taking a step back in time to Porto’s past.

The area was even designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic significance.

While the neighborhood remains busy throughout the day, it truly comes alive each evening. Locals and visitors from across the city come to soak up the lively atmosphere and sip wine as the sun sets over the river.

If you enjoy the energy of a lively city within walking distance of many main attractions, Ribeira is undoubtedly one of the best areas to stay in Porto.

I will mention that it’s probably the most tourist-oriented area in the city (which isn`t necessarily undesirable), and some of the restaurants and bars aren’t great. You’re much better off strolling north away from the river to find better, more authentic places to eat and drink.

But ultimately, the riverfront setting can`t be beaten, especially for shorter trips.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Ribeira

Pros of Staying in Ribeira:

• It is extremely center-placed. Ribeira is positioned right in the middle of everything visitors will want to explore in Porto. Staying here means only a brief walk to downtown attractions and a quick river ferry/bridge crossing to the port cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

• The river views. The neighborhood sits along the Rio Douro and has some of the finest views of the famous Dom Luís I Bridge and the river.

• Interesting lodging choices. There are some remarkable places to stay in Porto’s Ribeira district.

Cons of Remaining in Ribeira:

• It’s situated downhill. From Ribeira, it’s a steep uphill walk to popular attractions in Baixa such as Livraria Lello and the Sé do Porto. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes prepared for the terrain. Or use public transportation if mobility is limited.

• It’s pricey. Being so popular and central, it’s no surprise that Ribeira is one of the more costly areas to stay in Porto.

• The dining options are not exceptional. If high-quality cuisine is a priority, explore other parts of Porto, as eateries in this locality tend to overcharge for average fare aimed at visitors.

• It experiences large numbers of visitors. Those seeking a quiet atmosphere may find this neighborhood unsuitable.

Ribeira Highlights 

Here are some things to do, see, eat, and drink in Ribeira that we enjoyed, and think you will too.

• Explore the neighbourhood on foot: The historic district is a highlight in itself. Meandering through the web of cobbled streets and tiny alleys is a must for experiencing Porto fully.

• Palácio da Bolsa: The Stock Exchange Palace is a stunning Neoclassical structure from the 19th century in Ribeira. The majestic palace is a National Monument and hosts official state meetings. When it’s not being used for official business, you can visit the palace’s many impressive rooms on a guided tour.

• Miradouro da Vitória:This fantastic free viewpoint is a location we found ourselves drawn back to during our time in Porto. It offers stunning views over the rooftops of Ribeira, the Douro River, and many of the city’s main landmarks.

• Drink locally produced wine at Prova: Probably our most favorite wine bar in Porto. Prova has an excellent selection of wines and extremely helpful staff who offer a great introduction to Portuguese wine styles.

• Cask Beer: If you’re not a big wine drinker, or you simply desire a break from drinking excessive amounts of Port, this bar is the best location to access a variety of unique craft beers from Europe in Porto.

• Nightlife at Praça da Ribeira: Ribeira’s foremost square is jam-packed with active bars and clubs where you can party until the sun arrives up. Nightclubs in Porto don’t get starting until following midnight (at the earliest) and many stay accessible until 6:00 am, so you’ll demand to be a night owl to make the most of the city’s clubbing scene.

• Douro River Excursions: Many Douro River Cruises originate from the waterfront region in Ribeira.

Rio da Vila: A Stylish Guesthouse near the River

An à la carte breakfast is served each morning at the Bistro Wine Bar on the ground floor, which also offers a selection of wines, cocktails, and snacks throughout the day.

Exmo. Hotel: A Stunning Boutique Hotel

Situated directly across the grand Palácio da Bolsa and just 300 feet from the waterfront, Exmo. Hotel is a stylish boutique hotel right in the core of Ribeira.

The 4-star hotel features spacious rooms with rustic stone walls and sleek, minimal Scandinavian-style decorations. Each room also offers incredible perspectives over the city or river. Some rooms even have a balcony or terrace where you can appreciate your morning coffee.

Lodgings encompass cozy double rooms to spacious suites to accommodate all budgets. All rooms sleep up to two adults in either a double or twin single beds. An extra cot or bed for younger children can be added to the room for an additional cost.

A delicious breakfast buffet is served each morning. The hotel also has a trendy on-site bar serving food and drinks throughout the day and evening.

Mouzinho 160: Modern Apartments in the North of Ribeira

These bright and modern apartments provide a stark contrast to the 19th century building they’re housed within. Each of the beautifully designed apartments at Mouzinho 160 has spacious living quarters, a well-equipped small kitchen, and its own private bathroom.

The apartments are situated on the northern edge of Ribeira, towards Baixa and the many attractions in downtown – the perfect location for exploring both neighborhoods. Porto Cathedral is just a short distance away. There’s also a bus stop directly outside the building for easily accessing the wider area.

Accommodations will include one or two bedroom apartments. The largest unit spans two floors, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a private rooftop terrace. Naturally, more expansive layouts incur higher costs but appeal to those seeking ample private space.

Gran Cruz House: A Beautiful Guesthouse with River Views

The Gran Cruz House sits directly on the bank of the Rio Douro River, with magnificent perspectives overlooking the flowing waterway and Ribeira Square down below. Being so near to the river makes it a bit pricier than other hotels in Porto, but it’s undoubtedly worthwhile for the unsurpassed situation.

The guesthouse presents seven bright and colorful rooms, every influenced by a class of Port Wine, such as Tawny, Vintage, Ruby, and Reserve. Conventional azulejo tiles, local pottery, and splashes of blue and orange lend the hotel a distinctly Porto feel and uniqueness you won’t discover elsewhere.

The on-site restaurant Casario has a notable menu featuring Portuguese special dishes, a large collection of port and wine, and an open-air terrace overlooking the river. A choose-your-own breakfast is served on the terrace each morning.

Baixa (Around Praça do Município): The Best Central Location in Porto (Where We Stayed)

Baixa, also known as downtown, is Porto’s bustling city center. Centered around the impressive Avenida dos Aliados (Avenue of the Allies), the neighborhood is home to many of the city’s main landmarks and attractions.

The downtown region is situated just north of Ribeira and incorporates two elevations. One is home to Porto Cathedral and represents the most historic part of the city. The other is where numerous famous attractions can be discovered, like the grand Town Hall and Clerigos Tower.

In addition to its abundance of tourist attractions, the central neighborhood is known for its cool and trendy atmosphere.

Here you’ll find Porto’s young, hipster crowd sipping coffee in stylish little cafes, eating in fantastic international restaurants, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife scene.

Not surprisingly, Baixa also has the highest concentration of the best hotels in the city.

With plenty of attractions, restaurants, bars, and shops right there, it’s undoubtedly one of the best places to lodge in Porto for those who enjoy being amidst all the action.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Baixa

Pros of Staying in Baixa:

• As central as possible. Baixa is not just home to many of the city’s most significant landmarks and monuments, but most of Porto is also within walking distance. You can walk downhill towards the river and Ribeira, or cross the top walkway of Dom Luis I Bridge to reach the port cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

• More budget-friendly lodging choices. If you’re looking for places to stay in Porto without breaking the bank, Baixa has some of the more affordable alternatives in the city center – more so than Ribeira or Vila Nova de Gaia.

• It`s home to the finest cuisine and refreshments in Porto. Food lovers, look no more than Baixa! Many of the city’s best eateries, cafes, and bars call it home.

Cons of Staying in Baixa:

• Large crowds. Being the location of many well-known attractions, restaurants, and bars, the neighborhood is packed with tourists and locals at all hours. In particular, the area around Rua Santa Catarina, the city’s main shopping street, can get extremely crowded.

• Noise levels can increase at night. Depending on the specific location within the district where one stays, it has potential to become quite lively at night. Baixa is home to many of Porto’s bars and clubs, with patrons socializing and drinking on the street outside until early morning hours.

Here are some things to do, see, eat, and drink in Baixa that we liked, and think you will too.

• Sé do Porto: A 12th century cathedral located in Porto and considered one of the oldest constructions in the city. Having undergone numerous renovations throughout history, the cathedral showcases a unique blend of Baroque, Romanesque, and Gothic architectural designs. Be sure to wander along the charming narrow alleyways extending from the cathedral to Ribeira and the riverfront area. Check out this itinerary for additional details.

• São Bento Station: Considered one of the most picturesque train stations globally. The walls of the São Bento railway facility feature over 20,000 blue and white azulejo tiles that narrate the narrative of Portugal.

• Rua Santa Catarina: Porto’s busy main shopping street, full of international stores and brands.

• Igreja do Carmo and Igreja dos Carmelitas: Two beautifully tiled places of worship dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries connected by a small residence.

• Base Porto: An open-air harborside bar set amid greenery, ideal for sun-drenched cocktails.

• Sample Porto Tonico: Made with port wine, tonic water, and citrus juices, we discovered this iconic beverage during our stay in Porto and now regularly recreate it at home. Take a break from exploring the sites of downtown and enjoy a refreshing Porto Tónico at Livraria da Baixa (higher-priced but better cocktails) or Aduela (drinks aren’t as good quality though the atmosphere is cool and there is a nice little outdoor area).

• Eat a bifana at Conga: Try Portugal’s famous sauce-loaded pork sandwich at one of the best bifana spots in the city.

The Best Places to Stay in Baixa

Here are some lodging options in Baixa that stood out to us.

Chic & Basic Gravity: Nice Boutique Hotel

“A place where footwear hangs from the ceilings, lifts descend yet one ascends, fish fly, letters fall, and ceilings become floors.” If Wonderland was a hotel, this would aptly describe it.

Chic and Basic Gravity is a lodging that’s just as stylish as the area it’s found in. The inn’s nonconventional decor highlights brightly hued furnishings, plant pots on the ceiling, suspended neon lights, and an unusual rooftop pool that bends at a 90-degree angle. We can assure you`ve never seen anything quite similar to it.

In addition to the mind-bending decor, this unique 4-star hotel offers modern en-suite rooms with air conditioning, coffee machines, and mini bars. Breakfast is also available either continental or buffet style at the on-site Italian restaurant, and round-the-clock front desk service and private parking are provided.

Located just minutes from the Livraria Lello bookshop and Clérigos Tower, most rooms at the hotel come with a balcony or terrace with views over the city. The spacious family room can sleep up to four people (children or adults) so is great for groups or families.

Hotel Moon and Sun: A Charming Mid Range Hotel

Hotel Moon and Sun offers a modern, clean, and spacious mid-range lodging in the heart of Baixa, within easy reach of many downtown attractions on foot.

The hotel provides excellent value given its location and amenities. Each room features air conditioning, a kettle, a minibar, a safety deposit box, a television, and a private bathroom. Additionally, guests can take advantage of concierge services, an on-site bar, and a shared lounge area.

However, our most enjoyed feature of this hotel must be its spacious rooftop terrace where you can appreciate an end of the day beverage with magnificent city perspectives. It’s rather difficult to pull yourself away.

The Poets Inn: An Affordable Guesthouse

A more reasonably priced accommodation option in Baixa is The Poets Inn. The cozy literature-themed guesthouse is located just seconds away from Clérigos Tower and five minutes from Avenida dos Aliados.

There are 10 rooms to choose from, three of which are en-suite and seven with shared bathrooms.

If you’re willing to share a bathroom with other travelers, the Poets Inn has some of the most affordable and worthwhile private rooms you’ll find in central Porto. Several rooms even have a private balcony with fantastic views over the city.

The guesthouse also has a fully equipped communal kitchen and dining area for preparing your own meals, plus several living spaces and a small library so you can relax on your balcony with a good book.

This fantastic little spot really feels like a home away from home in Porto.

Look At Me Serviced Apartments: Cool Serviced Apartments for Groups

Before our family decided to join us on our trip to Portugal (which meant we needed a bigger place to accommodate more people), we had this place booked.

These beautiful light-filled lodging options are located just off from the central Avenida dos Aliados, close to city hall. Each spacious unit features hardwood floors, high ceilings, pastel colored furnishings, and large windows.

All apartment rentals at Look at Me include a fully equipped kitchenette with appliances like a coffee maker and dishwasher, in addition to a dining area. Some options also feature a private balcony.

The studio apartments can sleep up to four guests, while the lofts can accommodate up to six individuals across a ground floor space and a mezzanine level. They are perfect for larger families or large groups seeking some added room in Porto.

Fabrica 55: Nice Apartments for Couples / Solo Travelers

Fabrica 55 has numerous modern and elegant lodging units in a peaceful backstreet just seconds from a few of Porto’s top attractions.

You can choose between studios accommodating up to two guests or one-bedroom apartments that can sleep three people across a bedroom and convertible sofa. The studios are a little cramped, but they still have all of the amenities you could need for a shorter stay in Porto.

All accommodations include fully equipped kitchenettes with a fridge, stove, and microwave so you can prepare your own meals and save on dining out. There`s also a dining table and a small living area in each apartment.

The Passenger Hostel: A Boutique Hostel in a Great Location

Situated inside the iconic São Bento Railway Station, this trendsetting boutique hostel is undoubtedly one of the coolest budget accommodations in Porto. With its tall ceilings, swaying couches, and large windows overlooking the station platforms, a stay at the Passenger Hostel promises a distinctive experience.

The hostel provides spacious double, twin, and family quarters for a bit more seclusion, as well as mixed and female dorm accommodations. There are numerous communal hangout spaces and various daily activities scheduled by the hostel to help you connect with other travelers.

Additionally you can walk out the entrance and immediately embark on a train to explore the surrounding areas. Acquiring around the city couldn`t be any simpler.

Vila Nova de Gaia: Best Place to Stay for Port Tasting

While many people think of Vila Nova de Gaia as a neighborhood of Porto, it’s technically a separate city on the south bank of the Douro River. But for the purpose of this article, we’ll consider it an extended area of Porto. Gaia can easily be reached from Porto via a quick river ferry or by crossing the Dom Luis I bridge.

Vila Nova de Gaia is renowned for its many historic port storehouses and cellars, some dating back to the 17th century. It has become progressively more popular in recent years, with people coming to sample locally crafted port at the many riverside port lodges.

Despite being a little removed from the main attractions and landmarks of the historic city center, Vila Nova de Gaia is the best location to stay in Porto if you have an interest in the port industry and like being away from the big tourist crowds.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Vila Nova de Gaia

Advantages of Staying in Vila Nova de Gaia:

• The property is strategically located near many historic port wine lodges. Several renowned port wine establishments from years past are situated directly around the accommodations, so guests will have various chances to gain knowledge about (and sample) the local fortified wine.

• The perspectives. Situated atop a hill with views of the Douro and Porto, the neighborhood presents stunning river and city vistas.

Disadvantages of Staying in Vila Nova de Gaia:

• Accommodations in Vila Nova de Gaia tend to cater more toward the luxury segment, so the area often has higher price points.

• It’s distant from other attractions. The neighborhood is quite far removed from virtually every landmark and attraction other than the port lodges.

Vila Nova de Gaia Highlights

Here are some things to do, see, eat, and drink in Vila Nova de Gaia that we enjoyed, and believe you will too.

This lakeside house is located on the sunnier region of the lake according to the owners` assertion, and is close to 101, putting you approximately 5 minutes from the visitor center at Lake Crescent (not to mention the trailheads for the hikes that commence from the lake, like Marymere Falls and Mount Storm King).

• Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau: A lively but fun fast-food spot where you can sample pastel do bacalhau (traditional cod cakes) in a beautiful building while listening to live organ music, though skip the port here.

• 7g Roaster: A hidden specialty coffee shop hidden away in the alleys. This is where you’ll find some of the best coffee in Porto.

• Churchill’s 1982 Garden Bar: A relaxing little bar located in the secluded garden of Churchill`s port lodge, offering guests a tranquil setting.

• Great views: Some of the finest vistas in Vila Nova de Gaia can be found at Miradouro da Serra do Pilar,Jardim do Morro, and Miradouro da Ribeira.

If you’re seeking lodging in Vila Nova de Gaia, here are a few places that stand out to us to start your search.

The House of Sandeman: Affordable Hostel & Suites

Sleep within the walls of a historic wine cellar at this unique boutique lodging in Gaia. The Dwelling of Sandeman is the world’s very first branded hostel, opened by the iconic Porto wine brand of an identical name interior certainly one of their antique cellar structures.

The shared sleeping quarters are clean, spacious, and have unique custom bed frames drawn from port wine barrels. Shared bath and shower facilities and large private lockers are available for the dorms.

The property also has numerous private en-suite rooms independently. The cozy rooms have a warm and welcoming feel, with original wood furnishings, Sandeman artworks and pieces from the collection, and your very own turntable along with an assortment of vinyl records for listening.

CHARM by YoursPorto: A Solid Mid Range Guesthouse

Situated merely a one minute walk from the Douro River banks and the area’s numerous port wine cellars, CHARM by YoursPorto is a charming guesthouse in Gaia with bright and airy rooms and fantastic views over the Douro River.

Including exposed stone walls and refined woody furnishings, each room offers comforts for example an exclusive bathroom, air conditioning, safe, and fridge. Many also come with a balcony or terrace. Hot beverages can be prepared in the reception area, while breakfast can be supplemented for an additional payment.

The upper floors of the historic guesthouse are only accessible by stairs, so it’s probably not the best choice for those with mobility restrictions.

Vincci Ponte de Ferro: A Beautiful Boutique Hotel

This luxury spot is a fantastic option for those looking to treat themselves to something special in Porto. The large hotel is bright, modern, and immaculately decorated.

The on-site Dona Maria Restaurant serves a Portuguese menu, with a special emphasis on the freshest produce and seasonal goods.

Deluxe rooms, superior rooms, and suites are roomy, stylish, and offer fantastic views over the city, while the superior suite is one of the largest available in the city, with a cozy seating area, kitchenette, and private fitness area.
