Whistler BC, and the Sea to Sky Highway
DISTANCE FROM VANCOUVER // HOW TO ARRIVE
74 miles // By Car or Bus (Approximately 1.5 hours)
Things to Do in Whistler (and along the Sea to Sky Highway)
Shannon FallsΒ
Shannon Falls is found 36 miles from Vancouver just off the Sea to Sky Highway, and itβs extremely easy to access. From the parking area, itβs a brief 350-meter walk to the highest viewing platform along a nicely maintained boardwalk. This is BCβs 3rd largest waterfall (335 meters tall), so seeing it is recommended! While summer is a great time to visit, spring brings the snow melt swiftly down over the falls which is a spectacular sight.
Winter: Skiing in Whistler Blackcomb
One of the most renowned and popular ski destinations worldwide is Whistler Blackcomb in Canada, and with good cause. There are hundreds of ski runs to choose from and an amazing après-ski scene, so even those who don`t ski must see the incredible views from these mountains. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola that crosses between Whistler and Blackcomb peaks is particularly astounding. The perspectives are unforgettable from this cable car crossing the two mountains. It`s an expensive weekend getaway, but every cent is worth it.
Spring / Summer: Hiking or Mountain Biking
Youβll never run short of hiking and mountain biking trails in Whistler. If youβre in search of a respectable hike, consider the Skywalk Trail, which is a true valley to alpine experience (1000 meters of elevation gain) that will occupy your whole day, but the views are incredible.
Drink Craft Beer
Youβre just a couple of minutesβ walk from Mission San Francisco de Asis and Mission Dolores Park, and on 16th street there are Asian, Mediterranean and European eateries such as The Monkβs Kettle, which is an excellent spot for beer fans.
Where to Stay in Whistler, BC
SUMMIT LODGE BOUTIQUE HOTEL
An appealing option merely 10 minutes from the means of transportation up the mountain, the Summit Lodge features highly fashionable fully-furnished suites that all include small kitchen areas so you can cook for yourself and save some money. There are a couple of on-site dining establishments, bars, and cafΓ©s, and youβll have access to the pool and hot tub.
WHISTLER CASCADE LODGE
This exceptionally centrally located gem serves as a perfect base for a weekend in Whistler. Whistler Cascade Lodge sits a mere 5 minute walk (if even that long) to Whistler Village, brimming with bars, restaurants and the means to access both Blackcomb and Whistler mountains via gondola.
The check-in and check-out process is incredibly straightforward, and the spa/pool will be welcome amenities after a full day of activities.
Important note: Accommodation in Whistler can be pricey! After significant research to find the best value accommodation, I was pleased to discover a place so near the village β it means you donβt need to drive once in Whistler, always a plus.
BRIGHT & AIRY PENTHOUSE IN WHISTLER VILLAGE
If youβre more interested in staying in Airbnbs when you travel, check out this STUNNING 1 bedroom penthouse in Whistler Village. Bright, airy, and in a tranquil part of the Village, where youβll be near the action, but far enough removed to enjoy a peaceful nightβs sleep.
Victoria, BC: A Romantic Getaway on Vancouver Island

70 miles // By Car + Ferry (Approx. 4 hours)
FERRY DETAILS // TSAWWASSEN TERMINAL β SWARTZ BAY TERMINAL
Traveling from downtown Vancouver to Tsawwassen by vehicle may require anywhere from 40 minutes to 1 hour. I admittedly put off visiting Butchart Gardens until the end of my trip thinking it wasnβt quite my style, but I was pleasantly surprised. The grounds are stunning β 55 acres of perfectly landscaped gardens open year-round.
Vintage Shopping
If you have a liking for second-hand shopping for sustainability and affordability, you`re in for a real treat. Youβll find plenty of shops in Downtown Victoria. Sample Cider:Sea Cider Tasting Room
This cider is THE BOMB. Their cider house is situated in Saanichton, approx. 20 mins by automobile from Downtown Victoria. Youβll find a little bungalow overlooking the harbor where you can sit and sip their organically developed heirloom apple cider. Definitely get a tasting flight, and try whatever seasonal cider theyβve got at the time.
A Pick-Me-Up in Victoria: Hey Happy
I passed by this understated coffee shop and may have overlooked it were it not for the line outside the entrance. It`s clear these individuals are serious about coffee based on the delicious taste. They offer homemade cashew milk too, an added bonus!
100% Gluten Free & Plant-Based Cuisine: Be Love
Be Love serves locally grown, plant-based cuisine without gluten. It`s hard to choose just one dish – everything is amazing. Good for brunch, lunch or dinner in Downtown Victoria`s heart. It`s completely gluten free too!
Where to Stay in Victoria
Magnolia Hotel & Spa
Residing in Downtown Victoria isnβt low-cost unless dormitory-style lodging is preferable (if so, Iβd recommend Hi Hostel).
There are tons of stylish Airbnbs around Victoria, and I can personally vouch for this exquisite suite (w/parking!), which is where we stayed on our latest trip
Magnolia Hotel & Spa is situated in Downtown Victoria (an 8-minute walk to Hey Happy), and itβs been voted the top hotel in Canada by CondΓ© Nast, so you know itβs good.

Paddle Boarding or Kayaking
A brief note before we delve in β I have celiac disease, which means I must strictly eat gluten free. In fact, this site originated from my gluten free travel guides. Because of that, we are unable to partake in most of the amazing restaurants in LA.
This market is open every Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and brings together local farmers, craftspeople, and food vendors. Located near the Otter Bay Ferry, youβll feel like one of the locals at this market.
Coffee & Food: Gather Cafe
Gather sits on the water at Hope Bay, overlooking a beautiful harbor. Itβs a lovely spot for tea, coffee, and food. Their farm-to-table ethos uses the freshest ingredients from local and organic sources, and the couple that runs the place will make you feel right at home. They have live music some nights, which is worth a stop.
100% Gluten Free Food: El Faro Fusion
El Faro along the north end serves completely gluten free cuisine like fish and chips and cornbread. Worth considering for gluten free travelers on the island.
Hiking: A mountain trail
Hike the brief trail topping Mt. Norman for a panoramic vista of the San Juan Islands and Washington`s Olympic Peninsula, approx. 0.9 miles.
Where to Stay on Pender Island
If youβre after a quintessential cabin getaway β this fits the bill! You can stay in an Airstream, a Rustic Cabin, a Shasta Airflyte, or in the Woods Motel. Any of these selections are glorious, and most include a private hot tub. Not to mention the FOOD.
Their on-location cafe offers fresh farm-to-table nourishment and signature cocktails, which heightens the experience of your glamping. If youβre staying elsewhere, they provide an impressive sanctuary. Either way, itβs a must if youβre searching for the finest romantic weekend escapes from Vancouver, this is at the top of the list.

Seattle, WA: The Quintessential PNW City Experience

I grew up in Seattle, living there for 15+ years until moving down to San Francisco. Read my complete guide to a weekend in Seattle for the best things to do, see, eat, drink, and more.
The Best Things to Do in Seattle
Pike Place Market
.
β
Capitol Hill & Ballard
Thereβs a ton to do in these areas β itβs tricky to narrow it down! Visit the quaint Elliot Bay Books, grab a hand-made ice cream at Molly Moonβs or Frankie and Joβs for a plant-based option, and finally visit Starbucks Roastery Reserve for an immersive coffee experience.Β
Reserve a few hours for this one β this beautiful glass flower display will astound you. Itβs located near Belltown β a short drive from Downtown Seattle so grab a cab or a bus.
Speakeasy Cocktail Experience: Bathtub Gin Co
If dimly lit, speakeasy-style bars appeal to you, Bathtub Gin Co. is worth a visit. Nestled in the basement of an old brick hotel in Belltown β there`s literally a bathtub incorporated into the bar!
Psst! In need of gluten free food? Hereβs a guide to the best gluten free restaurants in Seattle.
Where to Stay in Seattle
I have an extensive guide on the top places to lodge in Seattle, so for more comprehensive recommendations, ensure to peruse that.
Here are a couple of recommendations.
Seattle has numerous unique boutique hotels β browse my guide to the coolest hotels in Seattle to discover an ideal, stylish place to stay for your weekend trip from Vancouver.
It would be beneficial to consider the State Hotel, which provides a stylish boutique-style lodging literally steps from Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle`s core, or the Moxy Hotel, which offers a hip environment well-suited for using as a base for exploring the city during a weekend visit to Seattle.
BELLTOWN AIRBNB
I greatly admire Timbuk2 backpacks and messenger bags for their direct tech-focused design and tough construction (plus theyβre situated in SF!), and Alysha favors her Parker Clay backpack (they also offer totes, if thatβs your preference).
Tofino, BC: Surfs and Storms on the Coast of BC
DISTANCE FROM VANCOUVER // HOW TO ARRIVE
202 miles // By Car + Ferry (Approximately 6 hours)
FERRY DETAILS // HORSESHOE BAY TERMINAL β NANAIMO DEPARTURE BAY TERMINAL
Horseshoe Bay Terminal is situated north of Vancouver, about 20-30 minutesβ drive from Downtown Vancouver. The drive from Nanaimo Departure Bay to Tofino will take approximately 3 hours so it is best to have a car.
Things to Do in Tofino
Surf Surf Surf
No matter the season, Tofino represents surfing nirvana. Endless miles of beaches welcome rolling waves. Rent a full-body wetsuit and board from a nearby surf shop then head to North Chesterman beach. You`ll feel the allure of escaping urban life, although it remains the most distant from Vancouver so it may be worth designating it as a 3 day weekend trip.
Food & Drinks: Tacofino not Celiac-safe
The iconic brightly colored food truck sits in an urban lot with long tables, serving fresh fish tacos that are remarkably good.
Hike Through Forests to Beaches & Coves
The pathways in Tofino are spectacular. From what I experienced, they are all relatively brief and simple, but the pathways lead you through woodlands where youβll discover some of the oldest trees documented in Canada. I recommend Big Tree Trail which has cedar trees over 1,000 years old. Thereβs nothing like it.
Yoga
Tofino serves as a hub for health and wellness activities. Attendees can catch a yoga class on the beach with Tofino Yoga. They even provide stand up paddle boarding yoga β an activity worth experiencing firsthand.
Where to Stay in Tofino
WILDPOD: LUXURIOUS WATERFRONT GLAMPING
Wildpod is the ultimate outdoor camping experience.
There are only 6 dome-shaped buildings situated directly on the edge of the water in downtown Tofino near all the entertainment venues, shops, and galleries. If fortunate enough, one might see a whale from their sleeping area β if that does not represent magic, I do not know what does.
You can find more of the best places to lodge in Tofino in my guide to where to stay in Tofino.
As I said at the beginning, Vancouver is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas β from stunning, serene nature to trendy and lively cities like Seattle and Victoria.
Regardless of preferences, Vancouver offers a handful of weekend escapes waiting to be experienced.
So what are you waiting for?
