Commencing on Boxing Day and continuing until New Year’s Day, sizeable Junkanoo processions occur on most islands, usually setting off in the early morning hours. • Whit Monday (7 weeks after Easter) – Whit Monday is a religious observance and public holiday in The Bahamas. This holiday signifies the conclusion of the Easter cycle and the beginning of community witness of the Christian church.
• The Barraterre Homecoming Festival & Regatta – This celebration takes place annually in Great Exuma over the weekend of Whit Monday. Events last 3 days and feature sailing, games, quadrille dancing, Maypole plaiting, Bahamian cuisine, crafts, Rake & Scrape music, a marching band, and a talent show.

• Emancipation Day (first Monday in August) – On the initial Monday in August, residents of the Bahamas commemorate the termination of bondage in 1834. Occasions incorporate an early morning “Junkanoo Rush-out” starting at 4 am in Fox Hill Village in Nassau, trailed by an afternoon of barbecues, social customs like scaling a greased pole, and the intertwining of the Maypole. • Day Honoring National Figures (October 14th) – In The Bahamas, the second Monday in October is set aside for tribute to those who made important contributions to the nation. This annual commemoration provides time for reflection on heroic deeds and marks a closure of banks as well as many stores and businesses. • Festival of Lights Boat Parade – Typically takes place on the second Saturday in December and now serves as the unofficial initiation to the Christmas party season. Locals decorate their watercraft and other vessels with strings of holiday lights and set sail in a convoy out in Nassau Harbour, in a nautical salute to Christmas under the stars. Waterfront restaurants and bars offer a Festival of Lights special evening promotion for visitors.
• Abaco Christmas Festival – An annual celebration held each year on the first Saturday of December to mark the beginning of the holiday season in The Abacos by bringing together family and friends through a variety of activities including early Christmas shopping at an Arts & Crafts Bazaar, sampling foods and drinks at a food court showcasing Bahamian cuisine, and performances by choirs, quartets, soloists, marching bands, calypso bands, and a dog show followed by a junkanoo procession.
• Christmas Day (December 25) – Christmas is celebrated throughout The Bahamas with various festivals and parades. One of the well-known celebrations is the Junkanoo parade, where participants wear colorful attire and dance to the rhythm of drums, whistles, and cowbells belonging to groups like the Saxons, Valley Boys, and Roots. The largest Junkanoo parade takes place in Nassau. Similar parades also occur in locations like Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Bimini, and Abaco. Traditional Christmas beverages that are enjoyed include ginger beer, sorrel, mauby, fermented sweet potato drink, falernum, shandy, rum, and wines. Most businesses close for the public holiday, which is also a non-school day.
• Boxing Day (December 26) – Beginning on Boxing Day, each island hosts its own Junkanoo festival, but the largest takes place in Nassau on New Providence Island featuring a parade, dance competition, and masquerade party.
