Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite national parks in Colorado. Itโ€™s also among my favorite places to take kids in Colorado!

RMNP offers several easy nature hikes for little hikers. The trail around Sprague Lake is flat and we have seen moose here in the past.ย

The Coyote Valley Trail on the west side of the park is just a mile, with tables for a picnic lunch at the start. The Holzwarth Historic Site is a good stop, and the visitor centers have hands-on exhibits to help kids learn more about the area.ย

Denver Botanic Gardens

Enjoy native plants and flowers and a dedicated childrenโ€™s area.

The Denver Botanic Gardens is one of my personal favorite things to do in Denver with kids! The Botanic Gardens have lots of interesting plants and flowers, plus a large, grassy area thatโ€™s perfect for running or rolling down. I especially recommend planning to spend plenty of time in the Mordecai Childrenโ€™s Garden. It has play spaces and plants kids can touch and investigate.

Garden of the Gods

Short hikes and rocks shaped like giants make this a fun Colorado spot for kids!

Garden of the Gods is a great Colorado Springs kid spot! The Garden of the Gods Visitor Center has interactive exhibits and a film about how the area was formed. The paths at the park are easy to navigate. And kids will have fun finding shapes like the Sleeping Giant and the Kissing Camels rock formations.ย

Garden of the Gods is one of the most popular things to do in Colorado Springs and a great free thing to do in Colorado with kids.

Practice docking a space shuttle, walking through a mine shaft or measuring yourself against a dinosaur. Kids 3-8 will love the Discovery Zone, with water experiments, a construction corner, and a science kitchen.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro Tip: You can save $1 off of peak entry times by purchasing your tickets online ahead of time!

Water World is a great summer spot because there are fun things for every age! Wally World and Little Bear Pond and Little Bear Pond are appropriate for toddlers and younger kids. Older children will enjoy bigger thrills like the Screaminโ€™ Mimi and the Mile High Flyer.

The Butterfly Pavilion is a really unique thing to do in Colorado with children. Even on a frigid winter day, you can cavort with free-flying butterflies and other insects!ย

The Butterfly Pavilion has several rooms to explore, featuring insects and ocean animals before you arrive at the main attraction. Youโ€™ll end up in the Butterfly Pavilion itself where you can watch the insects eat, fly, and sometimes even land on you! If you can, plan your trip around a release time when the newly hatched butterflies take to the air.

There are line dancing lessons at 7 pm (although we found them a little hard to keep up with), and a live band takes the stage at 8 pm. If the kids donโ€™t want to dance, they can play pool or try fun things like skee ball instead.ย ย

One of our favorite things to do in Leadville is to head to Hayden Meadows Reservoir on Highway 24 for some fishing! The reservoir is stocked, so impatient kids are more likely to actually catch a fish. If you want more of a challenge, head to Twin Lakes or Turquoise Lake for a much bigger body of water (or try ice fishing them in winter!)

Casa Bonita

Watch cliff divers and sample sopapillas.

๐Ÿ“ Google Maps | Casa Bonita Website

Casa Bonita is one of the more controversial things to do in Denver! Some people love the kitschy, bright pink restaurant. Itโ€™s known for its cliff divers and its notoriously bad food (except for the sopapillas!) Meanwhile, other people love to hate it.

However, Trey Parker and Matt Stone โ€“ the creators of South Park โ€“ bought Casa Bonita in 2021 and itโ€™s scheduled to reopen in May. They promise the food will be good, but this is such a Denver landmark that Iโ€™m not sure it matters.ย
