Do I need travel insurance for Costa Rica?

You may be questioning, Do I need travel insurance for Costa Rica? The answer is yes, you absolutely do.

a bird perched on top of a tree branch

First and foremost, travel protection is a entry requirement for Costa Rica. You won’t be able to enter the country without it, plus it ensures that any quarantine or COVID-19 therapy fees you incur in Costa Rica will be covered.

Additionally, ensuring travel protection is important regardless of destination. Unexpected events can occur anywhere. I`ve personally faced issues like being bitten by a monkey, contracting an amoeba, and misplaced luggage during trips. It was reassuring to have solid travel insurance covering such situations. Costa Rica is deemed one of the safest nations in Central America, but protection is still advised.

Costa Rica Travel Insurance Requirements

Requirements for travel insurance in Costa Rica are very straightforward. Tourists need to have travel insurance that:

  • Is applicable for the duration of their stay in Costa Rica.
  • Covers $50,000 USD worth of medical costs, like COVID-19 expenses. ($20,000 USD for Costa Rican insurance providers).

This travel insurance for Costa Rica can be purchased from a Costa Rican insurance company or an international insurance company, like Heymondo or Trawick International.

If you purchase international insurance that aligns with travel insurance requirements for Costa Rica, you must have a certificate or letter from your insurance company that states, in either English or Spanish:

  • The traveler’s name.
  • That the policy covers COVID-19.
  • The effective dates of coverage (dates of travel).
  • Guaranteed minimum coverage of $50,000 USD for medical expenses, which includes COVID-19.
  • Minimum coverage of $2000 USD for extended lodging fees, including quarantine or travel disruption.

Whichever insurance plan you end up choosing, you will need to include your healthcare details into the Costa Rican Health Pass form.

Heymondo’s policies satisfy all the requirements for Costa Rica travel medical care, so it is the best choice for Costa Rica travel protection.

Costa Rica Travel Insurance Cost

Many different things can impact Costa Rica travel insurance costs. Your age, nationality, and location (if you reside in the US) can all affect the expense of your insurance. Likewise, the longer your trip, the more pricey the insurance; and the more costly your trip expense, the more pricey the insurance.

Consider all of these factors when you acquire travel insurance for Costa Rica, particularly if you want inexpensive travel insurance for Costa Rica.

For individuals seeking the most reasonably priced travel insurance for Costa Rica, choosing an international insurance provider rather than a Costa Rican one is advisable. Insurance companies based in Costa Rica ( INS,Sagicor) tend to charge more and offer less coverage, while foreign companies, particularly Heymondo, tend to provide lower-priced options.

TOP COSTA RICA TRAVEL INSURANCE OPTIONS

* Trawick covers 100% of insured trip expense up to $100,000. Insurance pricing varies depending on your submitted trip cost.

As the details indicate, neither INS nor Sagicor furnish $50,000 USD worth of medical coverage. That`s because the minimum medical coverage necessary from Costa Rican insurance agencies is $20,000 USD. Only international insurance agencies are mandated to offer no less than $50,000 USD worth of medical coverage. However, their costs are lower!

In terms of the policies we are analyzing here, Heymondo Premium is the most inexpensive Heymondo plan that satisfies Costa Rica travel insurance requirements, and it’s the most cost-effective travel protection in our comparison and the one with the maximum coverage.

INS provides two distinct options for travelers, so I selected the most affordable one. Sagicor has different options for families and groups, but since the example concerns an individual traveling to Costa Rica, I used the Individual Insurance for Tourists. Trawick’s Safe Travels Voyager plan is the sole Trawick plan for US citizens and residents traveling from the US.

2. INS, one of the most convenient Costa Rica travel insurance plans

INS is a great choice if you want to purchase your Costa Rica travel protection from a Costa Rican company. INS is the Costa Rican government’s insurance provider, and its plans are intended to meet travel insurance requirements for Costa Rica.

Purchasing from a Costa Rican company can undeniably be more convenient given that the only data required on the Health Pass form is your INS policy number. Moreover, INS offers the most affordable travel insurance for visiting Costa Rica through a Costa Rican organization, but it still costs nearly double compared to Heymondo.

a sign that is on top of a green field

INS provides two plan options, with one featuring significantly higher coverage but at a much greater price and the other cheaper but offering reduced coverage. In both cases, the scope of coverage is narrower than Heymondo’s plan. Still, both INS plans protect against accidental death, disability, repatriation, medical costs, and accommodation expenses and satisfy Costa Rica travel insurance requirements.

However, since INS’s plans primarily cover medical-related costs, INS is more of a travel health insurance for Costa Rica than it is travel coverage. If you want protection for travel-related expenses, such as lost luggage, trip cancellation, or trip delay, again, Heymondo is a better choice.

Below is an example of INS Option 2 coverage for a 30-year-old traveler from the United States visiting Costa Rica for a two week period:

  • Price: $131.72
  • Deductible: $0
  • Emergency medical coverage: twenty thousand dollars
  • Extended accommodation fees: $2,000
  • Trip cancellation: Not covered.

  • Baggage loss: Not covered
  • Health coverage: Testing/treatment

3. Sagicor, another health insurance to travel to Costa Rica

Sagicor presents another excellent choice for medical insurance for travel to Costa Rica. They are a private Costa Rican insurance provider featuring numerous plans: Individual Insurance for Tourists; Individual Insurance for Tourists (over 70 years old); Family Plans for 2, 3, 4, and 5 People; and Lodging Plan.

Their plans are mostly medical-expense-focused and cover medical expenses, like medication; lodging expenses due to sanitary isolation; sanitary/funerary repatriation; medical expenses for pre-existing conditions; and passport loss.

If you’ve ever envisioned sleeping under the night sky, make use of your trip and go camping in Fuerteventura. We’ve set up camp on this island several times, and it was a wonderful chance to admire the dark heavens and photograph the Milky Way.

  • Price: $151.20
  • Deductible: $0
  • Emergency medical coverage: twenty thousand dollars
  • Prolonged lodging fees: $4,000
  • Trip cancellation: Not covered.

  • Baggage loss: Not covered
  • Health coverage: Testing/treatment

4. Trawick, a good travel insurance to Costa Rica for Americans

Trawick International’s Safe Travels Voyager plan is one of the highest rated Costa Rica travel insurance options for United States citizens and residents. Trawick also offers Safe Travels International and Safe Travels International Cost Saver plans for non-American travelers, as the Safe Travels Voyager plan is only available to those with a US citizenship or residency.

To obtain the cost of your insurance, among other details, you will need to provide the cost of your trip and the state you reside in, as well as the initial date you made a payment for your trip. The trip expenditure I used for the comparison was $2,500, but I also tried acquiring a quote for a trip cost of $5,000 and the insurance price was over $200, so it’s worth noting that the price of Trawick’s insurance will vary based on the cost of your trip. Heymondo, on the other hand, provides trip cancellation coverage of up to $7,000 for free.

Trawick Safe Travels Voyager plan covers, among other things, emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, trip delay, baggage, and rental car damage, so they are still a great travel insurance for Costa Rica. They also meet all of the travel insurance requirements for Costa Rica.

Ultimately, Trawick’s Safe Travels Voyager plan is a great option if you’re looking for comprehensive travel insurance. It can also be cost-effective Costa Rica travel insurance depending on the price of your trip.
