I have visited Denver, Colorado four times in the past year and a half, and every time Iโve had an opportunity to try more and more of the gluten free restaurants in Denver. In October 2020, after two weeks in the Denver area, I came to the realization that I needed to reexamine my ranking of gluten free cities, which prior to this trip went something like this:
- Portland for having numerous bakeries, breweries, cideries, and restaurants that are able to accommodate those avoiding gluten. Even people with other dietary constraints besides gluten – such as being dairy-free, vegetarian, or vegan – will find many culinary options.
- New York City due to the vast amount of gluten-free possibilities within the city.
- Seattle primarily for Ghostfish Brewing.
After this trip, I am able to firmly place Denver on the same level as Portland, equal best for gluten free options in the US. ESPECIALLY if you take into account the surrounding Denver area, which has some incredible dedicated gluten free establishments not to be missed on your visit.
But weโll get there in a second.
Nourishing oneself gluten free in Denver is EFFORTLESS, and in this guide Iโll recommend my premier selections for the best eateries, bakeries, breweries, and cafes for gluten free dining in Denver.
When I initially visited Denver a few years ago, my transportation driver from the airport told me about how rents have been rapidly increasing because too many individuals have been relocating there. At first, I chuckled when he stated he couldn`t find a place for under $1,000 as I reside in San Francisco where you can`t discover a parking spot for under that amount here.
I laughed again as his next statement appeared aimed at recruiting Alysha and myself to relocate to Denver, suggesting something like `It is a truly pleasant place to live – we experience the highest number of sunny days nationwide, even surpassing Florida with around 300 annually. The weather is amazing.`
Perhaps Denver should emphasize `TRAFFIC IS TERRIBLE! DON`T MOVE HERE!` like other cities do, instead of highlighting 300 days of sunshine.

Gluten Free Denver: The Complete Guide for GF Foodies
Not only is Denver a great place for people who seek sunny weather nearly every day and phenomenal gluten free cuisine, it is also a fantastic spot to spend a brief vacation. If youโre looking to get outdoors and go hiking or cycling, explore some world class gluten free eats, or sample some local Colorado gluten free beer, hard cider, and wine, Denver has what you`re seeking.
Here are some ideas for your next trip to Denver โ from what Celiac-safe gluten free restaurants you should sample, to things to do in and around the Denver area, youโll find everything you need to plan a gluten free Denver weekend escape.
The Highlights
Here are six must-try activities in Denver for people avoiding gluten.
Sunset at Avanti Food & Beverage + Quiero Arepas
`
.
`
Dinner at Work & Class or SuperMegaBien
Owned by the same restaurant collective, these two areas in RiNo are literally across the street from one another, and while not completely gluten free, are knowledgeable about cross-contact (fryers arenโt protected at either place), and have evidently marked menus with a lot of gluten free choices. When we dined at SuperMegaBien on our last trip, about 98% of the menu was naturally gluten free. And the cuisine is superb!
Brunch at Root Down
This constituted the highlight of my initial trip to Denver. Food will arrive with a small โgluten freeโ flag, akin to how Celiacs are treated in Rome. Great cuisine and ambiance in LoHi. They also have a location AT THE AIRPORT!
Holidaily Brewing (Golden, CO)
If you have a vehicle, this 100% gluten free brewery is about a 30 minute drive from Denver. Make it a day excursion and do a nearby hike, like Mount Galbraith Loop or the Chavez and Beaver Brook Trail Loop.
Stem Ciders Tasting Room
Stem Ciders is among my favorite cider makers in the country, and their tasting room in RiNo should definitely be on every gluten free foodieโs list while youโre in Denver. Regardless if you prefer super dry ciders (like myself!) or lean more towards the sweet side of the spectrum, Stem has a cider that youโll enjoy, and you can sample them all with a flight. If youโve got a vehicle, head to the Acreage in nearby Lafayette, where youโll find an even larger cider selection, and a menu with gluten free options (sadly not completely gluten free).
The Best Gluten Free Restaurants in Denver
Here is a guide to the best gluten free dining establishments in and surrounding Denver that are Celiac-friendly.
As always with my gluten free travel guides, you need to examine for yourself
Always inform your server of your needs, and if possible, communicate ahead by phone, email, or even Instagram message to ensure a place meets your dietary restrictions.
My primary rule is never accepting an online strangerโs word without confirming whether or not something is safe โ even mine. Consider this as a starting point, and always verify twice for yourself.
Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants in Denver
The following encompasses premier eateries in Denver committed exclusively to gluten-free fare. Brace yourself โ there are quite a few.
Quiero Arepas: 100% Gluten Free Arepas
I basically discovered Quiero Arepas somewhat unintentionally during our initial trip. This theme of happenstance experiences seems prevalent here
I was in Denver with friends for a weekend getaway, and we wanted to visit Avanti, which I highly recommend for its rooftop bar and outdoor area.
In researching Avanti, I discovered they had an arepa eatery inside. Those acquainted with me comprehend that I always look forward to arepas (side note: If youโre in San Francisco, go to Pica Pica for arepas crafted in a dedicated gluten free facility).
Quiero Arepas is remarkably comparable to Pica Pica โ delectable, handcrafted arepas in a certified gluten free environment with your choice of gluten free adult beverages, including gluten free beer, wine and cider to complement them.
I Highly recommend an evening at Avanti with dinner at Quiero Arepas for all celiacs exploring Denver. They also have a food truck making rounds in the city, and a new location outside of the city center but worth the drive!
What to Order: The Queso and Reina Pepiada (basically chicken + avocado) Arepas and the plantains. ORDER THE SIDE OF PLANTAINS TOO!!
Vital Root: Real Food Made From Real Ingredients
The inspiration behind Vital Root is to make vegetable-focused, wellness-focused, healthy fast casual food more accessible by โkeeping it simple.โ They are a 100% gluten free kitchen, and 99% of the menu can be made vegan by request.
While I have yet to personally visit Vital Root in Denver, it is certainly a destination I hope to experience soon. We did have the opportunity to dine there and really enjoyed it.
Be sure to stop by for breakfast on weekends, where choices range from pancakes to Thai noodles. And don`t forget to sample the pastries – like tiramisu and beet brownies.
Happy hour is quite the steal – $5 house wine and cocktails, $3 veggie wings, and $2 tofu bahn mi tacos. Delicious! Tue – Sun, 3-6pm.
What to Order: The bahn mi sandwiches and the pad thai are excellent choices. And count me in for crispy cauliflower any day.”
River and Roads Coffee
If you prefer to walk off your meal and learn more about Gastown`s past, try the Lost Souls of Gastown walking tour. It immerses you in the chilling tales of historic Gastown through a 90-minute walking route intended for adults, so leave the kids at home!
Options include a full breakfast menu, such as breakfast fries and biscuit sandwiches, alongside rotating baked goods.
We sampled the lemon doughnut holes and banana pancake muffin. Needless to say, I would happily have them again.
Oh yeah, and they offer amazing coffee. What more could you ask for?
OPT FOR THE BREAKFAST SIDES. We selected the sweet potato version, smothered in cheese, topped with a spicy spread, and two slow-cooked eggs. What a way to start the day.
Just BE Kitchen: 100% Gluten and Grain Free Restaurant
Their โwhyโ resonates with me โ it amounts to the idea that having Celiac Disease, or needing to eat strictly gluten free, shouldnโt mean you have to avoid food you love. Thatโs what this blog is all about โ finding amazing gluten free restaurants where you can walk in, order anything off the menu, and feel like normal.
Just BE Kitchen conveys that in excess. The kitchen is100% gluten, grain, refined sugar, soy, corn, peanut & legume free. However that doesnโt mean you wonโt get delightful nourishment. It is paleo, so on the off chance that youโre not acclimated to eating grain free, refined sugar free sustenances, it may be somewhat unexpected than what youโre anticipating. For instance, almond flour pancakes will never be exactly as fluffy as standard gluten free pancakes. Go in with that desire, and youโre going to love it.
You can find breakfast throughout the day, presenting scrumptious meals like biscuits and gravy or pancakes (among many other alternatives). The dinner menu has a similarly extensive selection of choices. Whether youโre in the mood for beef with broccoli or gnocchi, youโll find something delectable.
Happy hour is a great time to visit โ $4 gluten free beer, and a bunch of small dishes perfect for sharing. 3-6pm daily.
They also feature a Whole30 certified menu selection โ the only eatery in Colorado making that specific claim (or so they assert โ I did not independently validate).
What to Choose: The cinnamon roll was wonderful โ very cinnamon flavored! The breakfast burrito was also fantastic, considering when was the last time you had a breakfast burrito??
MMMโฆ Coffee! Paleo Bistro
At Mmm…Coffee, youโll find baked goods that are Paleo-friendly (gluten, grain, and refined sugar free) – cookies, brownies, and muffins – along with quality coffee. Itโs located south of Downtown Denver.
Debyโs Gluten Free: THE 100% Gluten Free Bakery in Denver
Debyโs Gluten Free is a 100% gluten free bakery located outside the city core by approximately 20 minutes (by car). It also operates in a peanut-free and soy-free environment, catering to those with peanut and soy allergies as well as children with such allergies. No flours containing soy, nuts or beans are used in any of their baked products.
They make over 275 gluten free items.ย
They have a HUGE selection of gluten free bread โ from country white to cinnamon raisin โ along with hamburger buns, french bread, and english muffins. Youโll also find an ever-changing selection of muffins, which are dairy free but DO contain egg, cookies, baking mixes and PIZZA CRUST!
Here is the allergen information regarding their breads from their website: โNote: Debyโs breads are Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and contain only a trace amount of Soy Lecithin (from the nonstick pan spray) All of our Bread Loaves are Egg Free and Vegan, along with our Hamburger Buns, Sandwich Buns, and Hoagie Rolls. Our English Muffins DO contain Egg.โ
Swing by on Saturdays from 9am-3pm for their โFresh-Outโ day, where youโll find a variety of baked goods laid out on tables outside their facility, including special selections like donuts.
Whole Sol: Gluten Free Smoothies & Bowls
Note: The oats they use are not purity protocol. If thatโs something important to you, like me, order without granola and avoid the overnight oats
Whole Soul, with locations in LoDo, Boulder, and arriving soon to RiNo and Sloanโs Lake, is a great 100% gluten free breakfast option in Denver. Itโs also 100% dairy free, if thatโs something you also require.
Theyโve got smoothie bowls โ like the โI Like You Matchaโ, which is a smoothie base of blended kale, pineapple, banana, and matcha topped with coconut, blueberry, and granola โ breakfast breads, and hot bowls โ like the Primal Bowl with cabbage, two poached eggs, and homemade hemp pesto.
Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants Near Denver
Just outside Denver, you`ll find multiple dedicated restaurants entirely gluten-free where cross-contamination needn`t be a concern. An absolute dream for Celiacs! I still get excited being able to order anything on the menu.
Holidaily Brewing: 100% Gluten Free Brewery (Golden, CO)
While not strictly a gluten-free restaurant, this brewery uses entirely gluten-free ingredients for their beers, making it a must for gluten-free beer lovers in Denver. Holidaily Brewing is located in Golden, Colorado, approximately a half-hour drive outside of Denver.
At their taproom, youโll find an assortment of beers on tap, along with food trucks containing gluten free selections (and some entirely gluten devoid โ like Dedicated Bistro & Bakery, typically parked outside).
They make 100% gluten free beer. Like, entirely gluten free. Not gluten reduced. 100% gluten free. AND ITโS GREAT!
- International Performances in Aspendos (near Antalya; dates variable, usually early September) โ Long-running event over 3 weeks featuring magical shows in the ancient theater at Aspendos, about 20km (12 miles) from Antalya.
This is one of my favored gluten free breweries in the country, and I bring back a couple of four packs of Fat Randyโs IPA and their Blonde as often as possible. You can find it at local grocery stores in Denver too, if you canโt make it out to their taproom.
Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants in Boulder, Colorado
Boulder is ~40 minutes away from Denver by automobile
Fresh Thymes: Cute eatery in Boulder โ everything is gluten free (and peanut free) except a few beers that they serve. REALLY solid food, and they have some great gluten free beers and ciders too.
Specialty bakery offering gluten free options(Boulder): I discovered this completely gluten free bakery in Boulder because of a wedding cake I had at a family wedding. I havenโt made it to the bakery yet, but it should be on your list! They do utilize non-purity-protocol oats in some of their baked goods, so thatโs something youโre concerned about (I am).
Shine Restaurant and Potion Bar: 100% gluten free spot in Boulder offering โpotions,โ which are similar to wellness cocktails without alcohol, and several brunch, lunch, and dinner selections like Mac & Cheese, a burger, and ramen bowls.
Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants in Lafayette, Colorado
Lafayette is approximately 30 minutes away from Denver by car
Teocalli Cocina: Mexican cuisine served in a trendy space in downtown Lafayette. And the full menu is completely gluten free. They create their own tortillas on site using the traditional nixtamal method (corn soaked in lime & water, then ground down to create delicious tortillas), and fill them with classics like carnitas, to more modern takes like pork belly. Pork shank pibil and birria de res are especially noteworthy from the primary dishes.
I think tacos are our favorite food category (donuts or arepas being a close second), so @teocalli_cocina was a highlight of our time in Colorado.
Theyโre a 100% gluten free Mexican eatery in Downtown Lafayette, which was where we stayed for part of our time in The Denver area.
We arrived for happy hour (ample outdoor seating available) where you can save $1 on all their REMARKABLE tacos, $5 house margaritas, and deals on chips, salsa, and guacamole.
The highlights for us were:
- The chips with the AWESOME macha โ a ground peanut and date mixture (very novel, I could eat it by itself) โ and the orange habanero salsa.
- The fried fish tacos, which are difficult to find without gluten.
- The de birria taco โ in the style of Tijuana! Short rib, Oaxaca & Chihuahua cheese, avocado green salsa.
But the peanut-date salsa is truly remarkable. It`s worth experiencing.
They offer great happy hour deals โ $1 off all tacos, $6 guacamole, and $5 margaritas. It`s well worth the ~20 minute drive!
Other Dedicated Gluten Free Restaurants Around Denver
Third Culture Bakery (Aurora, CO โ ~20 minutes from Downtown Denver): A 100% gluten free bakery in Aurora, their only flour is rice flour, and they were the original creators of the Mochi Muffin.
No Cow Cafe (Castle Rock, CO โ ~35 minutes from Downtown Denver): An entirely gluten free and dairy free bakery located in Castle Rock that offers various baked goods.
An option for gluten free baked goods located near Denver is Wave the Grain in Centennial, Colorado, roughly 25 minutes from downtown. Their approach promises `gluten free baking that doesnโt taste gluten free,` offering breads, pastries like danishes and cinnamon rolls, as well as breakfast and lunch items such as burritos, quiche, and ramen.
The Allergy-Free Baking Company in Morrison, Colorado โ approximately 25 minutes from downtown Denver โ is a bakery specializing in gluten, tree nut, peanut, and dairy free goods. Located in the town of Morrison to the southwest of Denver, visitors sensitive to other ingredients like eggs, corn or soy will find their detailed allergen listings helpful for discovering delectable options meeting individual dietary restrictions. Be sure not to overlook their popular Cinnamon Roll Saturdays.”
A bakery called Aimeโs Love located in Longmont, Colorado offers a completely gluten free selection of baked goods, breakfast items, and lunches. Approximately 45 minutes from downtown Denver, visitors can find mouthwatering crepes with Nutella and banana, breakfast sandwiches like one with pesto, and curries. For lunch, choices include paninis, chicken pot pies, and desserts like cupcakes and eclairs. According to someone named Alysha, if doing a blind tasting, one would not know the items are gluten free. Custom cakes can also be ordered for those with Celiac disease birthdays.
Celiac-Friendly Restaurants in Denver
These locations arenโt completely gluten free, so thereโs a higher risk of cross-contamination. Reach out ahead of time to confirm they can serve you, and ALWAYS tell your server about your needs. Donโt hesitate to leave without eating if you donโt feel comfortable โ Iโve certainly done it more times than I can count.
Root Down: The Best Gluten Free Brunch in Denver
Honestly, if I could eat every meal โ brunch, happy hour and dinner, at Root Down, I probably would.
But if youโre making me choose, I choose brunch.
You should unquestionably make an effort to have lunch at Root Down to sample gluten free delicacies during your Denver experience focused on dietary restrictions.
Not only was it very accommodating for those with Celiac disease, the food was also delightful. They offered typical brunch fare but with some subtle twists that enhanced the dishes. My meal came with a small flag to indicate it met my allergy needs.
Did I mention they have a location at the Denver airport? Grab gluten free breakfast before boarding your flight!
I have not made it here for the evening meal yet, but will do so on my next visit to Denver. Or perhaps for Happy Hour. Or both options.
Notable Gluten Free Dishes: I`ve eaten there only once, and I got the Classic Benedict with gluten free corn-based biscuits.
Work & Class: Trendy Restaurant with Solid Celiac-Safe Options
I took a chance on Work & Class, if weโre being transparent.
On their menu, items were labeled gluten free. However, I saw no user reviews on FindmeGlutenFree, so I wasnโt quite certain how celiac-friendly they would actually be.
So I decided to stop in for Happy Hour.
If things go well, that`s fantastic! I get to try some of their appetizing gluten free food. If it doesnโt go well and they lack processes to control cross-contamination, or the server looks at me strangely when I mention the word “celiac,” I finish my cider and move on. That`s clearly a win-win in my view!
When we got there, it was packed. At 4pm.
We sat at the bar and ordered drinks before I provided my explanation about having celiac disease to him. The bartender did not skip a beat, telling me that the deep fryers are not gluten-free and that he would add a note to our food informing the chef. WIN!
I truly enjoyed the Latin-inspired cuisine, and they had a fairly good selection of gluten free alternatives on the Happy Hour menu, and their dinner menu.
NO RESERVATIONS โ you can put your name in and grab a seat at the bar, but expect to wait.
Standout Gluten Free Dishes: the bacon-wrapped asparagus, the blue corn empanadas, and the rotisserie chicken.
Other Celiac-Friendly Restaurants in Denver
La Rola Urban Colombian Food: A Colombian eatery located in the trendy Zeppelin Station, where most menu items are naturally gluten-free, such as empanadas made from corn, and the deep fryers are safe for consumption. We dined here and basically relived our entire six week experience in Colombia through dishes like arepas, toston (fried plantains topped with favorites), and empanadas. Just be aware of the hot dog buns and two dessert options โ cheese bread and guava bread, which do contain gluten.
Hapa Sushi: A restaurant serving sushi in Denver, a locale not typically known for accessibility to seafood. However, this establishment provides a quality Japanese-Hawaiian culinary combination, with separate menus for those avoiding gluten and very good deals during happy hour. Several areas of Denver contain locations, one being in LoDo.
Vesta: Very knowledgeable staff and really solid food quality. Relatively expensive and higher-end than many other places on this list. .
Federal Bar & Grill: Firstly, a great 100% gluten-free beer selection! Additionally, dedicated fryers and knowledgeable staff! The fare is above average โ nothing too remarkable.
Revelry Kitchen: Not exclusively dedicated to gluten free options, but staff had robust knowledge. We dined here as a group and all enjoyed themselves, and I felt sufficiently safe. Menu items can accommodate gluten free preferences.
Celiac-Friendly Restaurants Around Denver
Reelfish: Devoted gluten free fryers for their chips and gluten free fish and chips. Places in Boulder and Lafayette.
The Buff: A friendly eatery in Boulder with gluten free fare, knowledgeable servers, and an upbeat ambiance
Luluโs BBQ: Delicious BBQ located in Louisville. Family residing nearby make this a guaranteed stop on all future trips to the locality. Food, atmosphere, and assistance are of high quality. All meats and sauces are gluten free, and many sides are too!
Yellowbelly: Gluten Free Fried Fowl! They donโt serve non-gluten free fried chicken, so cross-contamination is relatively low. A few locations in the Denver area, including Aurora and Boulder.
The Acreage by Stem Ciders
We came across Acreage a few years ago during one of our frequent trips to Denver, and it was one of our preferred places in the Denver area
Given our enjoyment of both cider and donuts, it was high priority for us this time too.
It overlooks the Rockies from a hilltop facing West, making it an ideal spot to drink cider, eat donuts, and watch the sunset. ๐
They have a dedicated gluten free fryer (โ ), kitchen space, and items containing gluten are clearly marked (โ ). Most items can be modified to be gluten free, but we stuck to the naturally gluten free options on the small plates menu.
Most of the primary dishes contain gluten, and I generally avoid ordering things that might require modification and cause confusion and stick to the naturally gluten free options.
The highlights:
โข The Basque Chips โ potatoes (cooked in a gluten free fryer) tossed in a citrusy vinaigrette and topped with grated manchego cheese.
โข The Grilled Greens + Burrata โ firstly, Iโm always willing to try burrata. Secondly, the sauce on this was incredible. I basically licked the bowl, because #nosauceleftbehind.
The Apple Cider Donuts were the highlight, obviously. They were still warm when obtained which made them 10x better.
The menu has altered since our last visit (RIP that cast iron cornbread), but it remains one of our favorite gluten free spots in the Denver region.
Where to Stay in Denver
When traveling, I always try to stay at an Airbnb with a kitchen to provide myself a backup plan to cook if I am unable to find safe gluten free food. (Here`s our list of the most highly recommended Airbnbs in Denver to assist you in finding an amazing place to remain).
However, within Denver, that level of precaution is likely unnecessary. There are an abundance of gluten-free dining choices in Denver certified as safe for those with Celiac disease wishing to experiment.”

Be sure to check out my thorough guide for lodging options in Denver to find the ideal home base for your visit.
Some of the best areas to stay in Denver are RiNo(River North Arts District), the trendsetting locale northeast of downtown, and LoDo (Lower Downtown), which is just on the other side of Coors Field.
For households or individuals who want some peace and quiet, Iโd look at the Lower Highlands (LoHi), which is more residential and will afford you more space and pleasant tree-lined streets to stroll. Youโll be near enough to Downtown, but away from some of the bustle and hustle.
The Best Airbnbs in Denver
Beautiful Two Bedroom Loft in Historic Five Points Neighborhood (RiNo / Five Points)
This property has two bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and a fully equipped kitchen.
If camping is not preferred, a good choice is to remain at LOGE Alta Crystal, which is a pleasant hotel just down the road from Silver Springs. Weโve lodged at LOGE properties before in Leavenworth, and enjoyed them (theyโre very eco-friendly and outdoor-oriented).
Vintage Cottage Unit (RiNo / Five Points)
Ideal for couples seeking lodging.
The Best Hotels in Denver
I have stayed at the hotel referenced by the hyperlink, and truly enjoyed my experience there. They provide mini-refrigerators in the rooms (if requested) so guests can shop for gluten-free groceries nearby at Whole Foods and stock up. The rooms are extremely nice. And the coffee shop linked sells what I believe to be the finest coffee in Denver. You should consider lodging there as well โ it`s in a central area near Union Station and is walkable to almost all destinations in Denver. Click here to view prices, reviews, and availability.
Seeking other hotel recommendations? No issue. Check out the Source Hotel, which is a cool boutique hotel in the heart of RiNo that is atop my list for my next trip. In LoDo, look at Hotel Indigo (budget-friendly) and the Kimpton Born(mid-range costs), which are both located near the Maven.
Things to Do in Denver
Venture outside! Colorado`s capital offers numerous day trips to some of the finest National Parks in the western United States. Try Rocky Mountain National Park, renowned for its scenic landscapes. Explore Boulder, a great mountain town ~30 minutes outside Denver. You can use public transit, or rent a car to get there. Go for a quick hike at Chautauqua Park, then grab some food at Fresh Thyme or the Buff, and finally some coffee at Ozo coffee โ the best coffee in Boulder.
Experience local Kombucha on tap at American Cultures, a kombucha bar (yes, thatโs a thing) with floor-to-ceiling windows and several different kombuchas on tap. Theyโre now closed :(.
