Generally speaking, our point of view is that an individual should opt for one home location in each area (e.g. Siena, the Val d’Orcia, San Gimignano & Volterra) and use it as a base to explore the broader surrounding region, spending 2-3 nights in each place to avoid transferring around daily.

First and foremost, if you’re new to Italian accommodations – particularly outside city centers – you may be wondering… what defines an agriturismo?
An agriturismo is basically an Italian farm stay. It’s usually an independently-owned hotel or guesthouse located on an active farm or vineyard, nestled in Italy’s beautiful countryside.
Agriturismi (that’s the plural form of agriturismo) can be found all across Italy. But as a top agricultural region, Tuscany is known to house some of the most stunning and luxurious agriturismi in the country.
So, back to the original inquiry, should you lodge in an agriturismo or a hotel inside a town or city?
The short answer is… it depends.
The first deciding factor will be whether independent transportation is available or not.
If you’re exploring the region using public transportation, you will have more limited access to staying inside the rural areas and secluded agriturismi since many require private vehicle transport given their isolated locations.
However, if you are exploring Tuscany on a road trip, you will have much more flexibility to choose between an agriturismo or a hotel inside each city.
Another deciding factor is simply personal preference and the type of trip you’re looking to take.
Generally, we prefer lodging at agriturismi, especially someplace like Tuscany renowned for relaxing experiences and la dolce vita.
However, in some destinations – like the regional capital of Florence – staying in the city center is more advantageous because you’ll be able to walk everywhere within the urban area, saving 20-30 minutes each way versus commuting from an agriturismo.
For each location outlined below, we’ll provide you both options as well as our recommendation about which we think you should choose for each specific place.
Pros and Cons of Staying in an Agriturismo in Tuscany
Let’s explore some of the pros and cons of staying in an agriturismo in more depth.
Pros of Staying in an Agriturismo:
- Romantic and charming. Residing in a Tuscan countryside farmhouse enveloped by olive groves and vineyards holds an unique appeal, surrounded by authentic yet upgraded rustic comforts preserving historical integrity.
- Dolce vita. Agriturismi offer a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere immersed in nature, so you can fully experience Italy’s famous “dolce vita” (sweet life).
- Free parking! Most agriturismi offer free parking on-site, so you won’t need to worry about expensive overnight parking costs during your stay.
- You don’t have to navigate the streets of a busy city center after a long day trip. By staying out in the countryside, you won’t need to find parking near your hotel in a congested urban center after exploring all day.
- The food offerings. Most agritourism places provide a delicious breakfast using seasonal products fresh from the farm itself. Many also have an on-site restaurant serving locally-grown ingredients, plus experiences like farm tours, cooking classes or wine and olive oil tastings.
Disadvantages of Staying in an Agriturismo:
- Further from the city center. Most agriturismi are fairly rustic and isolated, meaning you’ll need to get in your car each time you want to reach the city center (and have to deal with parking when you do go). This can be a bit of an annoyance if you want to enjoy a few glasses of local wine at dinner or don’t enjoy driving down small country roads at night.
- Usually more costly. Thanks to their extra charm and amenities, agriturismi usually come with a slightly higher price tag than regular hotels.
- Length of stay. Some (though not all) agriturismi require a minimum period, which is important to note. Longer minimums may not suit those with limited time hoping to experience different places each day of their trip.
Pros and Cons of Staying in a City Center Hotel in Tuscany
What about staying in a hotel in the city center? Obviously, there are benefits and drawbacks to this approach in Tuscany too.
Pros of Staying in the City Center:
- Walking distance to attractions. By staying in the city center itself, you’ll be within walking distance of many of the top attractions. You’ll also have a variety of cafes, restaurants, and bars right on your doorstep. There’s no need to jump in the car every time you want to go anywhere.
- Good if vehicular transportation is unavailable. Being based in the city means you’ll have better access to public transit like trains and buses. This accessibility will make your trip much easier if automobile conveyance is absent.
- Typically more affordable with more options. There tends to be more lodgings within the bigger towns and cities, so you can find more variety and affordable options if you’re traveling on a budget.
Disadvantages of Centrally Located Accommodations:
- Having a vehicle in the city center can present difficulties. Depending on where you stay within the urban core, driving and parking may prove problematic. Many Italian towns implement a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) with driving restrictions, so select lodging outside this area if routinely accessing your car is important.
- Less charming. While there are plenty of lovely guesthouses and modern hotels in the towns and cities, none quite compare to the allure of a Tuscan farm stay.

Florence and Siena can be accessed without a car, while the others are much simpler to reach if you have your own vehicle, which affects where you decide to stay (parking and driving in the city centers of Italy`s towns, no matter how large or small, can be a nightmare).
One very significant note before jumping in: Your response to where to stay in Tuscany will depend – almost entirely – on what your specific trip entails. Consider this guide as a menu to choose from.

Often referred to as the ‘Birthplace of the Renaissance,’ Florence was one of the richest and most influential cities in all of Italy, if not the world, during the 14th and 15th centuries. This unprecedented wealth led to the commissioning of the abundance of world-renowned Renaissance art and architecture still visible in the city today.
Despite its small size, there is plenty to see and do in Florence – from renowned art galleries and breathtaking churches to delicious cuisine – that you can easily spend several days exploring all it has to offer.
As the regional center, Florence also serves as an excellent base for exploring other parts of Tuscany through day trips from the city.

It is strongly advised to stay in a hotel located in the city center of Florence, rather than an agriturismo nearby
Florence is a relatively compact city, with most of the famous landmarks and attractions situated in the historic center. Remaining in the city places you right at the heart of the activities and within walking distance of everything you’ll want to see.
Additionally, driving to and within central Florence is a nightmare. The historic center has limited vehicle access, so you can easily end up with a hefty penalty for driving on restricted roads at the wrong time.
If you’re visiting Florence at the start of a Tuscan road trip, we’d propose picking up your vehicle on the day that you leave the city. You won’t require a car while in the city and it’ll save you several days of car rental and costly parking fees.

Pietrapiana Boutique Apartments (Where We Stayed)
Situated in Sant’Ambrogio, a neighborhood on the eastern edge of Florence’s historic center, Pietrapiana Boutique Apartments is an excellent choice to suit all styles and budgets.
Once a expansive family home, the property now has 12 units that range from hotel-style doubles without kitchens to studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments that sleep up to five people.
On our last trip to Florence, we stayed in a one-bedroom apartment, which featured a cool Scandinavian-inspired interior design and had all the modern amenities we could possibly need, including a fully equipped kitchenette and a small dining area.
Guests can leave their baggage at the property both before checking in as well as after checkout, which is a convenience not provided by numerous other rental units.
Hotel Milù
Hotel Milù is a modern boutique hotel focusing on design located inside a beautifully restored 14th-century palace in the heart of Florence.
The hotel`s central location next to Palazzo Strozzi makes it an ideal base for exploring some of the city`s most renowned landmarks like the Duomo cathedral, the Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio which are all within a short 5 minute walk away.
Milù’s quarters are stylishly furnished and decorated in a contemporary fashion, with vivid block shades and modern artwork hanging from the walls. There’s a blend of high-end doubles and lavish superior rooms including a private balcony.
Each room comes with its own coffee machine, and a buffet breakfast can be enjoyed each morning on the spacious rooftop terrace with views over the city. There’s also a cozy library area for you to escape and unwind with a good book.
25hours Hotel Florence Piazza San Paolino
25hours is a prominent inn sequence across significantly of Europe that’s reputed for its lively eccentricity and peculiar styles – something they have surely delivered to this Florence hotel.
The hotel offers an inventive design honoring the renowned Italian epic poem, Divine Comedy, written by Florentine writer Dante Alighieri. Guest rooms are distributed between two themes – Paradiso (Heaven) highlighted by ethereal white decor, and Inferno (Hell) bringing a slightly more provocative red and black atmosphere.
Situated in the Santa Maria Novella district in the western part of the city center, the hotel is within a brief walk of several of the city`s primary attractions.
However, if venturing outside does not appeal to you, the hotel also features an on-site eatery, Negroni bar, bakery, garden, sauna, gymnasium, and even a film lounge showcasing a curated selection of movies.
The Frame Hotel
The Framework Hotel has an interesting historical claim. This hotel that has stood for many years is where the renowned portrait painting of “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci was discovered two years following being illegally taken from the Louvre in 1911.
Now also known as “La Gioconda Ritrovata” (The Rediscovered Mona Lisa), the hotel embraces its notoriety by retaining the original elements of an ancient Florentine mansion, but with the addition of modern artworks depicting the Mona Lisa in different artistic styles.
The hotel is ideally located in the city center, just a few minutes from Piazza del Duomo. It has a variety of rooms, from small doubles and twins to a luxurious suite with a private panoramic terrace and hot tub.
A perfect Sierra Nevada mountain town for paddle boarding and other watersports.
Room Mate Luca
Room Mate Luca is situated in a tranquil region in the northern part of Florence’s historic city center, away from the loud crowds but still only 350 yards from the Accademia Gallery (home to Michelangelo’s David) and a 10-15 minute walk to numerous landmarks.
The 4* hotel sits inside a renovated 19th-century neoclassical palace, with elegant vintage features and bold, colorful decor by Lorenzo Castillo, one of the world’s best interior designers. Accommodations available include individual rooms, double rooms, and triple rooms.
A complimentary Mediterranean breakfast is offered in the dining room each morning between 7am and 12pm – relatively late compared to many other hotels in the city, making it convenient for those who rise later.
Agriturismi Near Florence
If unexpected issues arise making a central Florence accommodation unfavorable, here are two countryside alternatives near the city.
Villa Neroli
Villa Neroli is an elegant farm hotel built within a former ancient monastery on the outskirts of Florence. The building has maintained much of its original classical charm, with antique furnishings and traditional decor, but with the addition of all the modern amenities and comforts one could need.
Each morning you can enjoy a generous buffet breakfast in the breakfast room, unwind in the stylish lounge area, re-energize in the gym and sauna, and spend time relaxing in the garden with its outdoor swimming pool.
The hotel is situated a 10-minute drive from the center of Florence and offers free on-site parking. For those preferring not to self-drive into the city, public buses departing just outside the hotel can deliver you to the historic core in around 20 minutes. Another possibility is renting bicycles and pedaling to the city in approximately 20 minutes.
Art Hotel Villa Agape
In the hills just south of Florence, Art Hotel Villa Agape is situated in the magnificent former home of Duchess Anna D’Orleans and is encompassed by an 8-hectare private park filled with olive and cypress trees.
The villa features spacious quarters with traditional furnishings. There’s also an indoor lounge and plenty of outdoor seating within its Italian-style gardens. A complimentary breakfast is served each morning on the sunny terrace or in your quarters.
There is also a complimentary shuttle service to and from the city throughout the day, making Villa Agape a convenient lodging option outside the historic center.
You can also walk from the hotel to the Oltrarno district in around 20-30 minutes and take in the beautiful views of the Tuscan hills and over the city along the way.
Siena: The Most Beautiful Hilltop Town in Tuscany
Siena is possibly the best example of a customary Tuscan hilltop city. Formidable Gothic churches and grand medieval palaces tower over the identifiable red brick roofs that cascade down the hill from the city center.
The historic city once rivaled nearby Florence in its wealth and influence, which you can see in its incredible architecture and art scene. The entire city has even received recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Siena is a must-visit location in Tuscany and a popular day trip within the region. Although, this means it can become extremely busy during daytime hours.
Staying in Siena overnight will provide the unique opportunity to see the charming city at its quietest, during the late evenings and early mornings. Be sure to set your alarm early and head out before the large day trip crowds arrive.
Should You Stay in an Agriturismo or Hotel in the City Center in Siena?
This one’s a toss-up.
We opted to stay at an agriturismo just outside the city.
If relying on trains to explore Tuscany, lodging inside the city center proves most convenient.
Hotels in Siena’s City Center
Here are a few hotel choices in the heart of Siena.
B&B Il Corso
B&B Il Corso is a charming bed and breakfast located right in the bustling heart of Siena. It is just 40 yards from Piazza del Campo (Siena`s main square), making it perfect for beating crowds to the city center each morning.
The lodging located in a 16th century building offers an authentic Tuscan experience with timber exposed beam ceilings and traditional furnishings in keeping with the period. The rooms, decorated with care, are available as doubles or twins. There is also a larger suite featuring a private terrace overlooking the city.
Breakfast is not served directly at the lodging facility itself. However, if you book the breakfast choice you will receive a voucher valid for a cafe located on the same street.
B&B Le Logge Luxury Rooms
B&B Le Logge Luxury Rooms is another superb lodging option just a brief distance from Piazza del Campo and the Cathedral in central Siena.
Situated in a renovated historic palace, this remarkable B&B offers four spacious and luxurious individually-designed suites that can accommodate between two and three people.
The four suites were all tastefully decorated with their own unique styles, each providing something slightly different. Some included frescoed ceilings, some a spa bath or sauna, while one had amazing panoramic views over the city and Torre del Mangia tower.
The attentive owners are regularly available to offer tips and guidance, as well as to serve a delicious Italian breakfast each morning in the lovely breakfast room.
Hotel Athena
While we’ve included this one under hotels, Hotel Athena seemingly combines traits of both hotels and agriturismos. Despite being slightly farther from central Siena, it provides a quieter ambience similarly to an agriturismo along with free parking. Yet, it remains near enough to walk to the city center in approximately 10 minutes, comparable to hotels.
Found within Siena’s historic walls, Athena is a comfortable yet spacious hotel with warm colour schemes, classic furnishings, and traditional tiled floors. It offers a range of rooms that can sleep up to four individuals, making it a excellent option for families with younger children.
A buffet breakfast is offered each morning. The on-site eatery also provides a dinner menu of Tuscan and international dishes which can be enjoyed on the large terrace overlooking the city. The terrace perspectives are unquestionably one of the highlights of the hotel!
Agriturismi Near Siena
Here are a few options just outside Siena, including the place we stayed (which we loved and highly recommend).
Il Palazzetto (Where We Stayed)
Il Palazzetto is a historic residence surrounded by lush gardens and rolling hills situated just a 5-minute drive from Siena.
It represents an ideal lodging selection for those hoping to become fully immersed within the Tuscan pastoral countryside yet remain merely a brief stone`s throw from the lively urban center.
We stayed at this location for the first few nights of our Tuscan adventure, and truly loved every moment. But especially the sunsets from our private patio were fantastic.
The elegant property offers a combination of rustic one and two bedroom apartments that can sleep up to five adults (with a sofa bed). Each apartment contains its own cozy living and dining room and a fully equipped kitchenette for preparing your own meals.
Il Palazzetto was where we stayed during our most recent trip to Siena and we couldn’t recommend it more highly. Some noteworthy parts of our visit included the breathtaking 360 degree views, the large outdoor swimming pool and beautiful sun terrace, and the welcoming staff who provided us with excellent recommendations and helpful advice during our stay.
Palazzo del Papa Country Suites
If you’re looking for a romantic retreat on one of Washington’s coolest islands – Orcas Island – then consider this little abode.
Each spacious self-contained suite features a fully equipped kitchen and a large living and dining area. There`s also a communal sun terrace in the property`s large garden with barbeque facilities available for guests to use on sunny days.
The lodging is located just a 5-10 minute drive from central Siena, with free parking available for guests.
Hotel Santa Caterina
Hotel Santa Caterina is a 3* hotel in a convenient locale just outside Siena’s ancient city walls, just a few steps from the medieval city entrance, Porta Romana.
The hotel lay just outside the limited traffic zone, offering private parking for €15 daily, presenting a excellent option for those with a vehicle. Once on the premises, guests could take a brief bus ride or 15 minute walk directly into the heart of historic Siena.
The hotel itself sits inside a renovated 18th-century stately building with a large garden boasting stunning panoramic views over the Tuscan countryside.
The rooms are decorated in traditional Tuscan styles, with exposed wooden ceilings, terracotta and wood floors, antique furnishings, and classical decorations.
A complimentary breakfast of Tuscan delicacies is offered in the dining hall or out on the terrace each morning.
The Val d’Orcia (near Pienza): The Best Place to Stay for the Quintessential Tuscan Landscape
The Val d’Orcia is a beautiful lush valley just south of Siena and one of our favourite regions in all of Tuscany.
The valley is characterized by its rolling hills full of quaint hilltop villages, historic vineyards, and cypress trees leading up to grand Tuscan villas.
This location represents the essence of finest Tuscany for us.
The valley revolves around its three main towns (all of which deserve a visit) – Montalcino, Montepulciano, and our preferred, Pienza.
The valley is also a magnificent wine sampling destination, specifically Montalcino where you’ll discover world-renowned Brunello wine being generated.
Should You Stay in an Agriturismo or Hotel in the City Center in the Val d’Orcia?
Undoubtedly opt for an agriturismo here. The landscapes are breathtaking, and staying outside of the towns is a great way to fully immerse yourself in them.
Agriturismi in the Val d’Orcia
If you do decide to stay in an agriturismo in The Val d’Orcia, we’d recommend choosing somewhere near the town of Pienza.
Pienza sits perfectly in the center of the valley amid the other primary towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano, making it an ideal area to base yourself to investigate the region.
Il Casalino (Where We Stayed)
The Il Casalino is a small farm stay located in an excellent spot on the hill facing Pienza. The property is just a brief five minute drive into the city, while still feeling fully immersed in the beautiful beautiful Val d`Orcia countryside, complete with views of the rolling hillsides, vineyards, and cypress trees.
Set in a charming farmhouse from the nineteenth century, the traditional property has several double rooms with private baths, as well as a handful of one and two bedroom apartments.
Each of the apartments includes its private access point, a fully furnished kitchen, and use of the spacious shared garden and terrace.
The friendly owner Marco is always around to offer assistance with any requests and provide tips and advice about the area. During our stay, Marco went out of his way to include gluten free products in the welcome basket. A lovely personal touch!
Agriturismo Il Macchione
Agriturismo Il Macchione is a lovely lodging located in an 18th century renovated rural estate just a brief drive away from Pienza. The property cultivates quality olive oil on site.
The property has a handful of hotel-style rooms and four spacious self-contained apartments. All of the apartments are decorated in a rustic style with wood-beamed ceilings and antique furnishings.
They feature a living and dining area with a fully equipped kitchen nook for preparing your own meals.
However, the true highlight of Il Macchione must be its lovely gardens including a new swimming pool and hot tub with views of olive trees, a spacious sun deck with barbecue facilities, and a playground for children.
Relais Osteria Dell’Orcia
Relais Osteria Dell’Orcia is a cozy agriturismo located in a previous 16th-century messaging location just outside the small village of Bagno Vignoni.
Situated approximately a 15-20 minute drive to the south of Pienza, Bagno Vignoni is a village renowned for its unusual hot spring pool in the central town square.
The property itself is a traditional Tuscan home containing a small group of rooms varying from cozy classics to more expansive suites. The rooms all feature lovely terracotta floors and handcrafted Tuscan furnishings. Each has its own color scheme, with many floral designs and small elegant accents.
Outdoors, a spacious swimming pool surrounded by beautiful floral gardens offers a lovely spot to enjoy the complimentary breakfast each morning. The on-site restaurant also serves local Tuscan cuisine and classic Italian specialties on its romantic terrace throughout the day and evening hours.
Relais Mastrojanni
Relais Mastrojanniis a luxury agriturismo located between the towns of Pienza and Montalcino in a tranquil place surrounded by rich vineyards and olive groves.
The lodging underwent recent renovations and features several beautifully appointed rooms and spacious suites, each decorated in a chic modern style incorporating some traditional Tuscan elements like beamed ceilings.
Most rooms accommodate two guests, while the family suite sleeps four and the executive suite can sleep up to six adults across three rooms.
During leisure time, guests can unwind by the unbelievable outdoor infinity pool while admiring the stunning views of the surrounding valley.
Or stay inside and enjoy the property’s luxury wellness center, which features a mini pool with hydromassage, sauna, Turkish bath, and more. You’ll never want to leave!
Hotels in Town Centers in the Val d’Orcia
If you prefer lodging in one of the communities, below is an option in each of the region’s three main towns.
La Bellavita B&B (Pienza)
La Bellavitais a charming family operated lodging situated right in the heart of Pienza’s historic center, within walking distance of all the town’s primary attractions.
The B&B occupies one of the upper floors of a typical historic building from the region, with great vistas over the town’s characteristic red rooftops.
The accommodations are decorated in a straightforward yet elegant style, blending antique furnishings with modern amenities.
Some rooms have their own terrace or balcony. But if you do not have a private balcony, you can still enjoy your tasty homemade breakfast each morning on the shared rooftop terrace, which offers fantastic city views.
Osteria Del Borgo B&B (Montepulciano)
Situated near the primary Piazza Grande in the core of Montepulciano, Osteria Del Borgo B&B is not simply one of the optimal spots to remain in town, but it`s one of the optimal spots to eat too.
The B&B offers guest rooms and apartments precisely above the family’s traditional Tuscan Osteria, where you’ll have the ability to enjoy your free breakfast each morning and local Tuscan dishes for lunch and dinner. Ideal for food lovers!
The B&B and Osteria sit inside a historic building with high ceilings, exposed beams, and arched windows that give the feeling of being inside a medieval fortress.
From one side of the building, guests will be able to admire views over the central town square, while the other side offers beautiful scenery of the surrounding countryside.
You are able to opt for a smaller double room, two spacious suites with spa baths, or a large three-bedroom apartment with a kitchen that is capable of accommodating up to 6 adults.
Drogheria and Locanda Franci (Montalcino)
Locanda Franci provides lodging options in Montalcino to suit different budgets and group configurations. The hotel contains 9 boutique rooms spread across two properties, an annexed apartment (Casa del Dago), and a spacious private villa (Villa La Fortezza) accommodating up to 6 adults and featuring a private jacuzzi.

Situated south of Florence, the Chianti region is Italy’s biggest wine-producing area and is most renowned for creating the prestigious Chianti Classico red wine.
Though there are some charming towns worth visiting in the region, such as Strada and Greve, Chianti’s main attraction is its many vineyards and wineries providing tours and tastings, set among rolling hills, olive groves, farmhouses, villas, and castles.
Chianti is the best place to stay in Tuscany for the perfect Italian wine tasting vacation.
Should You Stay in an Agriturismo or Hotel in the City Center in Chianti?
There aren`t really any main centers here – so agriturismi will be your preferred choice.
Agriturismi in Chianti
Here are some places in Chianti that caught our eye.
Locanda Le Piazze
Locanda Le Piazze is a luxurious boutique lodge located inside a former 16th century farmhouse, surrounded by stunning vineyards and olive groves.
The rooms at this elegant hotel are bright, stylishly designed, and spacious, featuring traditional Tuscan elements such as beams or vaulted ceilings and terra cotta flooring, outfitted with clean, contemporary furnishings.
Some rooms also have a private patio where one can sit and enjoy the stunning views in the Tuscan sunshine. However, even if a room does not have a patio, guests can still admire the panoramic scenery from the property’s beautiful garden, which includes a sun terrace and a large outdoor swimming pool.
The hotel also has an on-site gourmet restaurant, using fresh products from local farms, and a luxury spa and wellness center, offering an extensive selection of treatments and massages. The perfect way to conclude a day exploring the Chianti Hills.
Terre di Baccio
Terre di Baccio sits surrounded by a 20-hectare natural area containing olive trees and vineyards, just a stone’s throw away from the town of Greve.
Set within a traditional 16th-century farmhouse, Terre di Baccio’s luxurious interiors are more on the unusual side. In the early 2000s, the property was redesigned in an eclectic style that combines traditional Tuscan rustic features with unique touches from locations around the world.
Guests can pick from various rooms and suites, as well as bigger one and two bedroom apartments that have separate living areas and well-equipped kitchens.
The restaurants and shops of Greve can be reached by foot in around 15-20 minutes using the property’s private pathway, which winds through the stunning gardens and vineyards. Ideal if you’ve already knocked back a few glasses of wine with lunch.

Podere Campriano is a charming family-operated organic farm and winery surrounded by the vineyards of Chianti, just a few minutes walk from the town of Greve.
The property has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with traditional Tuscan features and warm, classic furnishings. You can choose between a standard hotel-style room or suite, or a larger apartment with a small kitchen and private living space.
Outside the house, there’s a expansive saltwater swimming pool overlooking the vineyards and lush Tuscan countryside.
Podere Campriano is also a great location to gain knowledge about Chianti wines through a touring and sampling experience of the on-site multi-generational family-operated vineyard that has been cultivating Chianti Classico DOCG wines for four generations.
San Gimignano / Volterra: Charming Hilltop Towns in Western Tuscany
San Gimignano and Volterra are two charming hilltop towns in Tuscany, situated around 30km from each other in the western region towards the coast (side note: we didn’t really know Tuscany had a coastal section until we planned our trip, but you can see the coast from Volterra on a clear day).
San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its numerous medieval towers. The small town once had over seventy lofty towers shaping its skyline, earning it the singular title of the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”. Today just a handful remain, but it’s still quite the spectacle!
Nearby Volterra is another charming medieval walled town with several important historical and archaeological sites, including its world-renowned Etruscan museum and ancient Roman ruins. The town often attracts slightly reduced tourist crowds compared to San Gimignano.
Should You Stay in an Agriturismo or Hotel in the City Center in San Gimignamo?
Stay at an agriturismo if traveling by car. Or stay in the larger city of San Gimignano (or visit as a day trip from Florence or Siena) if without a vehicle.
Hotels in the City Center in San Gimignano or Volterra
Here are a few housing options in San Gimignano (and Volterra) that could be considered.
Leon Bianco (San Gimignano)
Leon Bianco was a 3* hotel located in a medieval palazzo in San Gimignano’s main square, Piazza della Cisterna. One really could not get any more centrally situated than this location.
The accommodation in the hotel are spacious and relaxed, with classical Tuscan design and all the contemporary conveniences one could need. There are various room configurations to pick from, extending from singles up to quadruples, making it a superb choice for groups and families of all sizes.
Each morning, the hotel also serves a delicious Tuscan breakfast that you can enjoy on the rooftop terrace while admiring the stunning views over the historic town below.
Hotel La Cisterna (San Gimignano)
Also situated on central Piazza della Cisterna, Hotel La Cisterna is within a beautiful 14th-century building and is furnished in a simple and elegant Florentine style.
Room options include doubles, twins and quads. Some have views over the central square, while others offer fantastic views out to the surrounding valley.
The hotel’s onsite restaurant is the only eatery on the Piazza della Cisterna with a panoramic view and is the ideal spot to enjoy some delicious Tuscan cuisine at the end of the day.
With its great location right in the heart of the historic city center, you won’t be able to drive or park near to Hotel La Cisterna. But the hotel does offer a free transfer to and from the designated parking area for guests.
Hotel La Locanda (Volterra)
You can also take part in a brief hike out to view the glacier up close, but you can’t actually get all the way onto it.
The hotel is situated within a 14th century former nunnery that once belonged to historian Anton Filippo Giacchi (renowned for his study of Etruscan history). The front of the hotel is uniquely decorated with carvings of Etruscan archaeological finds from the surrounding region.
Inside, the retro-style hotel has colors and patterns that pay tribute to neoclassical design. Most rooms are doubles, but there is one triple and family room available for larger groups too.
A self-serve style breakfast is included each morning for all guests. There’s also a small inner courtyard for you to unwind away from the town center.

Fattoria San Donato (Where We Stayed)
Sitting within the hills of San Gimignano, Fattoria San Donatois an old convent transformed into an operating farm and rustic agriturismo

Agriturismo Il Casolare Di Bucciano
Agriturismo Il Casolare Di Bucciano is a charming rural property and winery situated among the rolling verdant hills and vineyards surrounding San Gimignano. You can reach the town from the agriturismo in around a 10-15 minute drive.
The 16th century farmhouse has been lovingly restored in a traditional Tuscan design, with elements such as uncovered stone walls and terracotta floors.
The lodging contains beautifully furnished rooms with antique furnishings, and many direct access to the property’s lovely gardens and swimming pool. Accommodations include double and triple rooms as well as a spacious suite with a private garden and living space featuring a couch and fireplace.
Agriturismo Castello di Montauto
Approximately three miles south of San Gimignano, Agriturismo Castello di Montauto is an ancient hilltop ranch dwelling in the historic village of Montauto, with an astonishing 360° view of the encompassing Tuscan countryside.
The property takes its name from the village’s ancient castle, remnants of which can still be seen nearby.
The expansive agriturismo includes five traditionally furnished apartments, all capable of sleeping up to four guests. Each apartment also has a living area with a couch, smart TV, and a fully equipped kitchen. Most also have a private outdoor space.
There is also a spacious private villa that can sleep up to ten people across its five generously sized bedrooms. Extending over four levels, one will also find two lounge areas, a separate dining room and a well-appointed kitchen, as well as five bathrooms. The villa is ideal for large groups seeking added space and seclusion.
