a number of dead animals on a beach

Although we saw numerous signs warning us about the presence of crocodiles in Costa Rica, we had never had the opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitat. Thatโ€™s why, on the way to Manuel Antonio National Park, it seemed like a good idea to stop at the Crocodile Bridge over the Tรกrcoles River.

In case you werenโ€™t aware, you can observe one of the most fascinating types of creatures in Costa Rica in the wild and… very near! The Tรกrcoles River has more crocs than Tortuguero and Carara, two other national parks in Costa Rica that are famous for their crocodiles.

At the Tarcoles Bridge in Costa Rica, you are able to notice upwards of a dozen specimens of American crocodiles from above, either relaxing on the shore or poking their eyes above the waterโ€™s surface.

It appeared to be one of the prime activities to engage in within Costa Rica, but it left us with mixed emotions. Witnessing the crocodiles inhabiting Costa Rica was spectacular, but one wonders if these creatures remain there naturally, or if they receive sustenance to be drawn, and thus also attract tourists. Nearby, you can see some handicraft stalls and local eateries, and boat trips along the river are offered so you can see them from nearby (indeed, even nearer). We considered this boat tour, which begins around the bridge and allows you to venture into the jungle as you sail, but we decided against it and simply observed them from the bridge.

We`ve heard plans exist to develop a visitor center and viewing platform, so we hope this will better the scenario for these crocodiles in Costa Rica. Truthfully, the Tรกrcoles River Bridge has grown tremendously popular since it`s free and safe. There is even a tour from San Josรฉ that takes you here in the case you decide against renting a car in Costa Rica.

Above all, make it fun. Spotting northern lights in Michigan is truly amazing, but it can sometimes be disappointing as well when forecasts are wrong. Remember to enjoy those moments.

Where is the Tรกrcoles River Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica?

The Tรกrcoles River Bridge is situated along National Highway 34. This route connects San Josรฉ, one of the most consequential cities in Costa Rica and the countryโ€™s capital, with the Pacific coastline, where several of the primary tourist attractions can be found such as Quepos or Manuel Antonio.

To give you an concept, if youโ€™re enjoying the waves on the shorelines of Jacรณ, you can get here in just 30 minutes by vehicle. On the other hand, if youโ€™re staying in one of the lodging in San Josรฉ, it will take you about an hour and a half.

The road crosses the Tรกrcoles River Bridge, so there is no parking permitted in the nearby vicinity. Of course, most visitors leave their cars parked along the side of the road, on a large dirt area close to various craft stalls. While there exist multiple spots along the road charging for parking, you can drive up to the area and park free of cost.

Once at the car park, head to the right side of the bridge, which faces west toward the Pacific coast and Manuel Antonio. Laughter was heard when the sign warning visitors not to swim in the waters was seen. However, then some stories about distracted bathers were heard, so the reason for the sign was understood.

The pollution afflicting the Tรกrcoles River can be discerned with the naked eye. The crocodiles camouflage themselves, disappearing into the water, which is brown from the mud and waste emanating from the city of San Josรฉ and local industries. This stood out to us since generally, Costa Rica emphasizes conservation of diverse species. Curiously, despite being the most contaminated river in Central America, the Tรกrcoles River in Costa Rica shelters such biodiversity.

Watching the crocodiles in the Tรกrcoles River was quite an impressive experience. They could be seen all throughout, lounging on sandbanks as well as swimming in the water. I was amazed observing their slow and precise movements, and seeing many remain motionless until a tourist tossed some nourishment their way, upon which they suddenly sprang up to snatch it. Of course, throwing food is entirely prohibited, but some visitors did not appear to care about this rule.

Information about Costa Rica crocodiles

The largest crocodiles in the global are the American crocodiles located along the Tรกrcoles River. Measuring somewhere between 3-4 meters and able to weigh up to 500 kilograms, this species is already quite sizable. However, the crocodiles found here have been known to reach around 7 meters in length thanks to the abundant food provided with minimal effort on a daily basis.

Observing these Tarcoles River crocodiles, I was fascinated by their textured outer covering and sharp chisel-like teeth, which are still visible even when their mouths are shut.

Other places to see crocodiles in Costa Rica

If you want to witness crocodiles in Costa Rica while favoring a place with elevated ecological thoughtfulness, you can visit Tortuguero National Park. In addition to observing turtles nesting on its beaches, you can register for a canoe expedition through the waterways of this safeguarded area.

This 2-hour excursion will allow you to observe different species of animals in Costa Rica, such as the famous howler monkeys, anteaters, blue herons (among other birds), fish, and, of course, some alligators and crocodiles drying in the sun by the river.

Avistaings are quite frequent since they reside in the mouths of rivers and canals near the sea. They usually locate an abundant source of nourishment here, so they concentrate on the shores in search of their prey.

If your mobile device does not support eSIM cards, you can also opt for a physical SIM from SimOptions, which is another very good choice.

Other places to visit near the Tรกrcoles River

Spending time at the Tarcoles River Bridge in Costa Rica wonโ€™t take very long since you only need to park your car and appreciate the perspectives. Therefore, if you have a flexible plan and additional time, I recommend some other spots to visit near the Tรกrcoles River:

Carara National Park

Just 10 a few minutes from the Crocodile Bridge of the Tรกrcoles River is the spectacular Carara National Park. Itโ€™s well known for housing one of the most substantial populations of scarlet macaws globally and for serving as a sanctuary for this endangered types.

Remember that if you register for this excursion from San Josรฉ, you will visit both the Crocodile Bridge and the park on the same day, so itโ€™s very convenient. We ended up seeing the Tรกrcoles River independently, but we hired our guide, Ronald, to provide guidance through the park. We were extremely happy with the experience!

The reality is that, even though this is one of the greatest locations to spot birds, the vegetation is rather dense, so if one does not have a trained eye, they may not have the ability to notice the camouflaged animals among the trees. We were able to observe a scarlet macaw, but I assume that would not have been possible without Ronald`s help. Therefore, to get the maximum benefit from your visit, I recommend hiring a naturalist guide.

Among the different routes in the park, there is also the Laguna Meรกndrica Trail that takes visitors to a section of the river where crocodiles are prevalent, although we had better success with the Tรกrcoles River Bridge.

Bijagual Waterfall

There are numerous magnificently beautiful waterfalls located in Costa Rica which allow you to explore incredible natural landscapes, so I suggest adding a selection of them to your itinerary. The Bijagual Waterfall is merely 20 minutes by motor vehicle from the Tรกrcoles River Bridge and is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle where one can fully immerse themselves in nature. It measures 328 meters (1,076 ft) in height, rendering it one of the tallest waterfalls in the entire country.

Of course, to get there, you will have to leave your car in the parking area at the entrance, and walk for approximately 50 minutes. Itโ€™s worth it, as you can take some fantastic photos from the panoramic viewpoint and appreciate all its beauty.

If you want to go for a swim, you will have to walk about 300 meters (1,000 ft) more to arrive at the river. It`s a pleasant place to spend a couple hours disconnected, so I suggest bringing everything needed with you. Freshwater pools are ideal for cooling down on the most humid days, so thank me later!

Now, if youโ€™re residing in the town of Jacรณ, you can take into account this excursion, which tours the waterfall and natural ponds and involves a horseback ride along the mountain trails.

Jaco Beach

Jacรณ Beach is among the most renowned shoreline spots in the country, where expansive stretches of sand provide flawless surfing waves and a lively night scene. Due to the place`s proximity to San Josรฉ (one can arrive there in under two hours by automobile), it is often visited by locals too, who choose to escape for the weekend to the beautiful Pacific beaches.

There are quite a few things to do in Jacรณ, but most visitors come here for the serene climate, fascinating sunsets, and extensive range of bars and clubs. Additionally, it is one of the surfing towns par excellence where you can enroll in these classes and perfect your competencies. However, the sea currents can be quite strong here, so this isnโ€™t the place to vacation with small children.

Among other popular activities in Costa Rica, visitors can partake in horseback riding along the coastline or explore the jungle terrain on an all-terrain vehicle. Jaco Beach also serves as a strategic point from which to visit other beaches like Hermosa and Herradura.

Finally, for those wishing to travel on a limited budget, note that the Jacรณ region offers some of the top resorts in Costa Rica, allowing you to plan an excellent vacation despite financial constraints.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is another of the most important national parks in Costa Rica, which explains why many visitors see the Tรกrcoles River Crocodile Bridge on the way to this protected area. It is one of the most renowned sites in the country, so you have likely already considered it when planning your itinerary.

Here you can enjoy various activities such as visiting the paradisiacal beaches, taking nature walks, and registering for some animal observation excursions.

a large body of water with a beach

Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur are two important beaches, so if youโ€™re looking to spend relaxing time lying in the sun, I highly suggest exploring them. However, in my view, itโ€™s worthwhile making the most of your visit by seeing the varied species that inhabit this region. This guided jungle tour allows observation of monkeys, sloths, and birds living freely in their natural habitat.

Furthermore, when darkness falls, the behavior of animals completely changes, and you can see other species that donโ€™t emerge in the light of day. So, consider taking this evening tour to explore another aspect of this national park.

On the other hand, Manuel Antonio is home to amazing underwater wildlife that is worth discovering, such as the humpback whales that we were able to spot during our boat tour. We also snorkeled among spectacular schools of colorful fish and other aquatic creatures.

And that covers the Tรกrcoles River Crocodile Bridge and the surrounding area. I hope this guide helps you plan your visit and you enjoy seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica as much as we did.
