The Best Areas to Stay in Hanoi

The capital of Vietnam is an invigorating and bustling place, yet it can also be disordered and frustrating at times. It`s important to choose an area to stay based on your interests, budget, and ability to walk amidst the hustle and bustle.

Hanoi Neighborhoods – My Recommendations

a room filled with lots of christmas decorations

Most visitors logically desire to remain in the Old Quarter, which holds historic and concentrated but bustling qualities. It’s my preferred area to stay in Hanoi but for initial travelers it might be just overly occupied. Access can be difficult by vehicle. Parked motorcycles, boxes of goods, and trees overtake the walkways, producing walking challenging and becoming lost an ordinary occurrence. The slender-width streets and alleyways are jam-packed with budget-priced guesthouses and mid-range boutique hotels. But there are many worthwhile alternatives elsewhere across Hanoi.

Around the Hoàn Kiếm Lake, more open areas and greenery are present than other places in the Old Quarter. The scenic lake is an important respite and landmark for tired visitors. The northern section of the Old Quarter provides better value and is more authentic, but it remains very crowded and rather disorienting. Generally, the roads are wider, so walking is marginally less dangerous.

The more restful area directly south of the Old Quarter is practical to wander to the Old Quarter without the challenge of remaining there. The roads are wide and leafy, and the amenities and houses are notably more upscale. The elegant French Quarter is a few minute’s walk east of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. It’s home to the world-renowned opera house and several high-end hotels. With broad boulevards, cafes, patches of greenery, and a showy mall, this area seems a world away from the Old Quarter. Yet it’s so nearby.

Approximately 10 minutes by taxi from the Old Quarter, the region located further south along West Lake is lined with high-end hotels. It offers space, gardens, and views not possible in the central district. Progressing further north along West Lake, luxurious apartment structures fill the skyline, principally catering to upper-class local residents and visiting business people. Shopping malls provide trendy boutiques and internationally recognized coffee shop brands.

Around the inner-western region of Hanoi, there are primarily hotels that service businesses, so visitors are scarce, which presents an attraction itself. With miniature lakes and huge shopping complexes, this area provides an authentic slice of middle-class living without the trappings of mass tourism.

Getting Around Hanoi

a number of people on motorcycles in a parking lot

As most tourists spend time in the Old Quarter, transportation options there are impressive – and conveniently located in the northern lake area. One reliable taxi company is Mai Linh, whose drivers usually use meters without prompting. Cheaper and faster, especially around the Old Quarter, are Grab motorbike taxis using a excellent app (like Uber) for set fares rather than negotiating with street drivers.

  • Abel Cider: Really good, bone dry, and gluten free. Difficult to locate though – I only saw it once on the trip.
  • Wild Side Cider: Some intriguing fruit blends, gluten free, on the sweeter end of the spectrum.

Safety in Hanoi

Perhaps the greatest potential peril for all visitors is the risk of impact from a vehicle either while crossing the road or even walking alongside the sidewalk. Exercise far more caution than you would at home and make two assumptions: all people will completely disregard traffic rules, and pedestrians have absolutely no rights whatsoever.

Additionally, taking the regular safety measures around crowded streets, markets, and bus stations is important, where opportunistic petty crimes such as bag snatching and pick pocketing can be prevalent. Far from the irritations of mass tourism and traffic chaos found in other areas of Hanoi is the tranquil and secure location around Golden Lake (Giảng Võ), only 5km west of the Old Quarter.

Best Areas in Hanoi for…

  • The area south of the Old Quarter in Hanoi is a great introduction for first-time visitors.
  • Never underestimate the potential distress of dealing with the relentless traffic, noise, and crowds around the Old Quarter (with some respite along Hoàn Kiếm Lake). As mentioned several times earlier, this hopelessly congested section of Hanoi can feel overwhelming, even for those accustomed to traveling around Asia. Anyone visiting Hanoi or Vietnam for the initial time should consider this and search for lodging elsewhere. Traffic flows comparatively smoothly along the broad, shady streets south of the Old Quarter, and pedestrians can even walk on sidewalks. Yet this area is within walking distance of the historic Old Quarter, elegant French Quarter, and tranquil Golden Lake (Giảng Võ), which offers a slice of Hanoi life unaffected by mass tourism.
  • Best Region in Hanoi for Sightseeing: Around Hoàn Kiếm Lakea building with a clock on the front of it

While there are not too many obligatory sights within the Old Quarter, this ancient part of Hanoi remains a important attraction. Walk (carefully) along crowded streets and narrow lanes. Come across ancient Chinese temples and tributes to Vietnamese heroes and lively produce markets by chance. Places to see around the lake area include St. Joseph’s Cathedral; Lotus Water Puppet Theater, and Ngoc Son Temple on the small island in the lake. Good transportation options (see later) around the lake allow simple access to sights elsewhere around the city, like the Hanoi Zoo, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum (which is extraordinary), and the various war museums.

  • Best Area in Hanoi for Families: The northern section along West Lake
  • The Old Quarter isn`t ideal for traveling with youngsters under 15. Sidewalks are used for other purposes rather than pedestrians, necessitating that everyone walks along the congested roads, all of which are narrow and crammed with trucks, buses, automobiles, and motorcycles – none of which observe any traffic regulations. In fact, during multiple days of recent research, we did not see one foreign family group in the Old Quarter. To explore this area, utilize a cycle rickshaw or join an organized tour – and rest elsewhere. High-rise accommodations and apartment complexes to the north along West Lake (Hồ Tây) offer more space, gardens, and fresh air unavailable in the Old Quarter. They also have a sizable outdoor pool, kids’ club, and cooking facilities, so they are perfect for families and those staying for an extended time. Western-style shopping centers and familiar fast-food outlets are also nearby.

  • Best Area in Hanoi for Vibe and Culture: Northern Part of the Old Quarter
Hanoi was established over 1000 years ago and is considered Southeast Asia’s oldest continually serving capital city. It’s a treasure trove of culture and history that has survived French colonial reconstruction and the Vietnam War (known locally as the “American War”). Tracing its roots to the 13th century and built as a dedicated commercial district, the Old Quarter is a compact, pulsating, and overcrowded tangle of narrow streets still dominated by businesses. Among the travel agencies, spas, and jewelry boutiques are numerous markets, temples, workshops, phở noodle stalls, and family homes only accessible by implausibly narrow tunnels. Visitors can spend days exploring the Old Quarter. It’s easier around the northern part where traffic flows better, some sidewalks are accessible to pedestrians, shops are less touristy, and traders are not so pushy.
  • District in Hanoi with the Livelist Nightlife: French Quartera living room filled with furniture and a projector

The finest options for after-dark entertainment are the sophisticated nightclubs in the French Quarter. Two great choices are the Binh Minh Jazz Club and, located next door, the Beatro Gastro-Lounge. These drinking establishments cater mainly to upper-class Vietnamese, but tourists are always welcome. Otherwise, a performance at the prestigious Hanoi Opera House is a highlight, though it is sung in the Vietnamese language, it remains enjoyable.

  • Best Area in Hanoi for Food and Restaurants: The French Quarter
  • a restaurant filled with lots of tables and chairs

In recent years, lots of restaurants within the Old Quarter have shuttered and been substituted with spas. There are still eateries around the Old Quarter, but almost all are along busy traffic roads. For a diverse variety of cuisines and a tranquil setting, wander along the leafy, wide streets of the French Quarter. Definitely try among the restaurants inside these extraordinary hotels: Metropole,Hotel de l’Opera, and, especially, Capella. Or savor a foodstuff at the stylish Pane e Vino Italian restaurant, funky La Table Hanoi, or the outside cafe in the gardens of the opera house.

  • Best Region in Hanoi for Peace and Quiet: Inner-Western Hanoi (around Golden Lake)
The capital and largest city, Hanoi, experiences much noise. Traffic, particularly in the Old Quarter, is relentless and worsening as citizens replace motorbikes with vehicles and park wherever they desire. One of the few locations in Hanoi where it is feasible to escape the traffic, crowds, and noise is Golden Lake. It`s a pleasant region in the inner-west, only 5km from Hoàn Kiếm Lake. The tranquil, shaded streets and relaxed outdoor cafes are popular with locals seeking relief from the urban chaos. Tourists are a rare sight, which is another rationale the area is so relaxed.
  • Best Zone in Hanoi for a Romantic Getaway: South along West Lake
More suitable places in Vietnam come to mind for a romantic holiday than Hanoi. These include the adorable, ancient town of Hoi An, the Vietnamese honeymoon capital of Dalat in the cooler highlands, and the stunning tropical isle of Phú Quốc. Within Hanoi, the Old Quarter is too crowded and noisy for a peaceful, intimate holiday, so stay in the area south along West Lake (Hồ Tây). The lake is embraced by a quiet pathway ideal for walking (plenty of locals stroll around hand-in-hand). For cycling, bike rental is only available for guests at certain hotels; there are no rental shops. Elegant cafés facing the water and chic restaurants along the main roads are perfect for sipping coffee, chatting, and watching people.
  • Prime Areas in Hanoi for Views: South and North along West Lake
Let’s be honest: Hanoi is not that attractive. Unlike tourist destinations in Vietnam, such as Hoi An, Hue, and Nha Trang, the capital isn’t on the coast. Most accommodations in the historic and overcrowded Old Quarter are compact, low-level hotels and guesthouses. Windows face a neighbor’s wall or other hotel windows. And some rooms have no windows at all. Offering space, gardens, facilities, and views are the high-rise hotels and apartment buildings scattered along the southern and northern edges of West Lake (Hồ Tây), about 5km north of the Old Quarter. Most rooms offer extended and uninterrupted views across the sprawling suburbs and lake.
  • Best Area in Hanoi to Organize Tours: Northern Part of the Old Quartera sign that is on the side of a building

Travel agencies populate the streets and alleys throughout the Old Quarter. Most function as sole proprietors earning commissions for excursions arranged by larger corporations. The Old Quarter is best explored on foot or by bicycle rickshaw. Other attractions, like the Zoo and mausoleum, can easily be visited using taxis or the Hanoi City Tour hop-on hop-off bus service. Popularly organized excursions outside of Hanoi include the Perfume Pagoda, Ba Vi National Park, and Tam Dao hill station. Lengthier trips are simple to arrange to Sapa and the emerald waters of Halong Bay. Nearly all organized tours incorporate pick-up and drop-off at your lodging, which is less complicated along the broader streets in the northern section of the Old Quarter.

  • The best area in Hanoi for outdoor activities is the northern part of the Old Quarter.
  • The travel agencies mentioned above also facilitate organized trips for outdoor activities, but researching online, especially about safety precautions, is always prudent. There aren`t many options for outdoor pursuits in and around Hanoi, but more adventurous travelers may want to kayak or rock climb at Halong Bay in northeastern Vietnam or hike around Ba Vi National Park. Most visitors conserve their energy, time, and money for trekking through Sapa`s astonishing landscapes and traditional villages, located approximately 320km northwest of Hanoi. As explained above, virtually all organized excursions include pick-up and drop-off at your hotel, which is far more convenient along the broader roads in the northern section of the Old Quarter.

  • The best area in Hanoi for walking is south of the Old Quarter
For most visitors, wandering throughout the Old Quarter is not an enjoyable experience. Pathways are crowded with parked motorcycles, food stalls, and anything else which fails to fit inside a shop. Traversing the streets carries inherent dangers. To survive: (1) accept that pedestrians have absolutely no rights – not even on walkways; and (2) presume that nobody will obey traffic regulations – particularly at traffic signals. In contrast, the area just south of the Old Quarter provides broad streets where traffic flows smoothly and walkways that pedestrians can truly utilize.
  • Best area in Hanoi for cycling: South along West Lake.
  • a row of bikes parked next to each other

Visitors to Nagoya can sample delicious miso katsu (fried pork coated in miso sauce) at the restaurant Misokatsu Yabaton, identified by a sign featuring a pig in a red sumo belt. Other popular dining establishments in the city serve dishes like fried prawns and seafood at Maruha Shokudo or chicken wings known as “tebasaki” at the Yamachan chain. For a more upscale meal, Ryotei Kawabun is a traditional Japanese establishment claiming an establishment date over 400 years ago, as indicated on their website Ryotei Kawabun.

  • Preferred Area in Hanoi for Markets: Northern Part of the Old Quarter
The Old Quarter was established as a commercial district. Vendors on certain roads sold identical goods (and often continue to do so): for example, Hàng Gai Street for silk and Hàng Bạc Street for silverware. Roads like Hàng Hành (where onions were the primary product for sale) and Hàng Đường (for sugar) have now been overwhelmed by boutiques, restaurants, and travel agencies offering tours to Sapa. Locals still enjoy shopping at markets, and one of the most atmospheric and authentic in Asia is the Đồng Xuân Market, about 1km north of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Constructed over 130 years ago and nearly destroyed by fire in 1994, the three levels are home to over 2000 stalls. Even more are set up on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings as the streets between the market and lake turn into a night market.
  • InstagramFacebook
  • Catering to the increasing residential high-rises along the northern edge of West Lake (Hồ Tây), several compact shopping centres have opened nearby, like Lion Mall. Much larger and showier is the Lotte Center Hanoi, home to the luxury Lotte hotel as well as the eponymous Department Store and glass bottom Hanoi Sky Observation Deck on the 65th floor! Other malls in this inner-western part of the city include Vincom Center Metropolis.

  • Preferred Area in Hanoi Near the Airport: North Along West Lake
  • With two terminals for international and domestic flights, the Nội Bài International Airport is inconveniently located approximately 30km north of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Despite the fast expressway north of the river, the journey can still take around an hour to hotels within the Old Quarter. Staying in the area north along West Lake (Hồ Tây) will lessen the cost and time of travelling to and from the airport by taxi or private car using the ride-share app Grab (see above) or an online company such as Hanoi Transfer Service.

The 7 Best Areas in Hanoi for Tourists

1. Around Hoàn Kiếm Lake

people standing in front of a large body of water

Dominating the southern portion of the Old Quarter is the picturesque Hoàn Kiếm Lake, a glorious place for strolling, sitting, and watching Vietnamese people enjoy life—whether young professionals sipping coffee, senior citizens doing tai chi, or young couples socializing. The lake provides a welcome respite from the unrestrained chaos along the rest of the Old Quarter and serves as the hub for inner-city transportation.

three boys are sitting on a bench by the water

With more fresh air and greenery than the crowded backstreets, Hoàn Kiếm is also a practical landmark. Most accommodations are affordably priced guesthouses and mid-scale boutique hotels. Only a handful of hotels face the lake and provide views, and no hotels cater primarily to families.

And note: within this area, there are quiet laneways (yes, really!) with accommodations, e.g., around St. Joseph’s Cathedral and along Hàng Hành/Báo Khánh Street.

2. Northern Part of the Old Quarter

a room filled with lots of christmas decorations

The northern area of the Old Quarter is more authentic and less expensive than near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, but remains part of the busy, loud, and chaotic inner city. Choose accommodations carefully: what may initially seem a simple 10-minute walk from a hotel to Hoàn Kiếm Lake may be far less enjoyable due to frenzied traffic, convoluted street planning, confusing street names, and almost total lack of sidewalks. Most hotels are compact, low level, and squeezed along congested streets and alleys. The location has more luxurious multi-star hotels than closer to the lake. There are plenty of low cost choices in the northern part, but little excites those traveling with children. This area is best for markets, shopping, and organizing tours or outdoor activities outside the city.

3. South of the Old Quarter

a street filled with lots of shops and people

This highly appealing area is surrounded by and within walking distance of major attractions and all that the Old Quarter has to offer to the north, the pleasantly convenient and surprisingly discreet central train station to the west, to the south, Thiền Quang Lake, popular with locals, and the supremely elegant French Quarter directly to the east.

South of the Old Quarter is home to relaxed Asian embassies, cultural centers, and a pleasant mixture of elegant cafes alongside phở noodle stalls with tiny plastic chairs. Ideal for wandering, the roads are wide, so the traffic flows, pedestrians can actually use sidewalks, and foreigners are a rare sighting.

Accommodations range from towering 5-star hotels to charming boutique-style guesthouses and self-contained apartments suited for families or longer stays. The area is ideal for visitors experiencing Hanoi as a first-time destination.

4. French Quarter

a car that is parked in front of a building

From the southeast edge of Hoàn Kiếm Lake and past Hanoi’s first McDonald’s outlet (only opened in 2017), streets become wide and sidewalks usable for pedestrians. The contrast to the ancient Old Quarter is sudden and intense: stalls become malls, and international-brand stores sell handbags probably costing a year’s wage for a rickshaw operator.

a dining room filled with tables and chairs

Most dining establishments are elegant, trendy, and frequented by upper-class Vietnamese, and nightlife can even get somewhat lively at times. Three of the most prestigious lodgings in Vietnam are situated here, and each has a name and/or theme founded on the majestic Hanoi Opera House, which dominates this area. Otherwise, accommodation choices are limited, but exploring the area is undoubtedly worth it when staying elsewhere.

5. South along West Lake

a row of tables with chairs and umbrellas

Most high-rise hotels are scattered along West Lake (Hồ Tây), about a 10-minute trip by taxi automobile or, quicker, motorbike taxi from the Old Quarter. Hanoi’s largest lake is stagnant and somewhat polluted, but the area does offer the type of space, greenery, and views not possible anywhere in the Old Quarter.

Stylish cafés compete for space with phở noodle stalls, and paths circling the lake are perfect for strolling and cycling, so it’s an excellent option for those on a romantic holiday. Most accommodations are high-end hotels and apartments popular with families and long-term visitors. There are a few boutique hotels, but very few in the moderate range.

6. North along West Lake

a woman walking down a street with a basket of bananas

Traveling further along the edge of West Lake (Hồ Tây) – and past high-end hotels like the Sheraton and InterContinental – there are a collection of very elevated structures occupied by suites and apartments for corporate travelers and others staying a few weeks or longer. With abundant space, gardens to play in, and lodging with kitchen amenities, these flats are also well-liked for families traveling with children. There are very few low-cost choices and almost no boutique hotels. While it`s possible to find some peace and quiet, this region has drastically transformed in recent years as compact shopping centers have opened, and the primary roadway is lined with globally recognized coffee shops, designer boutiques, and fast-food retailers. It`s also the best area for accessing the airport.

7. Inner-Western Hanoi

a restaurant with tables, chairs, and umbrellas

Overlooked by most travelers, the inner-western portion of Hanoi is less than 5km from the edge of the Old Quarter. This region is loud, busy, and contemporary yet fascinating in its own manner. Excellent lodging can be found in two distinct sections: (1) near the chaotic intersection dominated by the Lotte Center building and merely a 10-minute walk from Hanoi Zoo (which deserves visiting); and (2) around the diminutive but charming Golden Lake (Giảng Võ). Surrounded by relaxed cafes where menus are in English and visitors are scarce (but always appreciated). This lake provides a fascinating glimpse into middle-class living. Most lodging in both areas are in the high-end category and intended for business travelers.

Together with my husband, Intan, we often find ourselves in our second home, Bali, but our adventures take us to exciting destinations all over the globe.

Join us on our journey!
