Paris is split into 20 administrative parts, or districts, each with its own unique character and appeal. The districts are organized in a clockwise spiral pattern, starting from the city center and widening outwards towards the outskirts.

The arrondissement system in Paris was established in 1795 during the French Revolution, as a way to divide the city into administrative districts. Previously, Paris was divided into parishes, which had their own administrative and judicial systems. The arrondissements were intended to provide a more unified system of governance for the rapidly expanding city.

Originally, Paris was divided into 12 districts, each with its own mayor and council. In 1860, the city expanded its borders to include the surrounding towns and villages, and eight new districts were added, bringing the total to 20.

The arrondissements were intended to be roughly equal in population size and each assigned a sequential number from 1 to 20, with the central 1st arrondissement. The system has proven a helpful approach for administering, governing, and culturally organizing the city.

Presently, each administrative division possesses its own council and mayor, accountable for local concerns such as public transportation, waste administration, and cultural events. The administrative divisions also play an important role in the city’s political life, with each administrative division selecting representatives to the Paris City Council.

The initial four districts (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) located in the heart of the city, known as the “Right Bank” or “Rive Droite”, hold many of Paris’ most famous attractions, like the Louvre Museum, Tuileries Gardens, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. These districts are also home to some of the city’s most upscale shopping and dining spots. The popular Marais district spreads across the 3rd and 4th districts.

The successive three arrondissements (5th, 6th, and 7th) are situated on the Left Bank, or “Rive Gauche”, and are renowned for their scholarly and inventive heritage. The Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement is home to numerous of the city’s top universities, while the 6th and 7th arrondissements house some of the city’s most famed museums, including the Musée d’Orsay and the Rodin Museum. The Eiffel Tower is located in the 7th arrondissement.

The 8th and 9th arrondissement (back on the Right Bank) were known for their expansive boulevards and luxury purchasing, including the famed Champs-Élysées road. This region was after a well-liked residential area for the well-off elite and is house to numerous lavish structures and landmarks.

The outer most arrondissements (10th-20th) are situated on the outskirts of the city and are known for their more varied populations and lively street life. These areas are home to some of Paris’ best outdoor markets, as well as many trendy cafes, bars, and clubs. In particular, the 10th and 11th arrondissements have become popular places to live among young Parisians and expats in recent years.
