• Trastevere is a wonderful area to lodge in Rome. Potentially my favorite Rome neighborhood for initial visitors. It’s both central to the top sights of Rome and a little removed from the city center (across the river) so feels less touristy than regions around the Trevi Fountain or Spanish Steps.

Map of Rome Accommodations and Where to Stay in Rome

• Trastevere is a historic region in Rome centered around the Piazza de Santa Maria, highlighted by its fountain located before the Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere. It’s a busy and lively area that is easily walkable. A wide selection of small restaurants, ice cream shops, and second-hand stores can be found. Cuisine includes traditional Roman dishes alongside regional Italian fare or pizza. Eateries are primarily Italian trattorias, pizzerias, and osterias frequented by locals serving generations-old recipes and dishes. Those seeking a fun and eclectic place to stay will find Trastevere a great choice.

The neighborhood has many pleasant small streets and charming small squares. The central neighborhood square is dominated by the 12th century Basilica di Santa Maria. Behind the Basilica is located Museo di Roma in Trastevere. The museum’s permanent exhibition focuses on life in Rome in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Major themes include costumes, folk dancing, festivals, and crafts. By cutting across the busy Viale Trastevere, you will find the path down to Basilica di Santa Cecilia. Palazzo Corsini houses a collection of antique art by Titian and Caravaggio. Behind the Palace is the botanic garden of the University of Rome, with over 7000 plant species.

• The Giancolo or Janiculum Hill offers spectacular views of Rome from its green setting.

• The area has a largely multicultural environment and has long been a haven for artists and expatriates. A major attraction of the area is the ability to enjoy an evening stroll. The walkable area is characterized by narrow, cobblestone streets. The dining options feature both traditional Roman cuisine and trendier hotspots with modern menu items.

• A tram stop at Trastevere/Mastai on line 8, as well as a bus stop at Trastevere/Mastai on lines 23, 280, and 780 provide public transportation in Trastevere and connect the neighborhood to the remainder of Rome. The distance from Rome Airport (FCO) to Trastevere is 20 kilometers: 30 minutes by train ($10), 25 minutes by taxi ($65), 65 minutes by bus ($10).

• There is a good selection of short term stays in Trastevere via Airbnb and hotels ranging from moderately priced to four star – nearly no five star hotels. ( All Trastevere hotels bookable through Booking.com.)
