Pacific Hotel – Comfortable, great value, tropical-style, and in a perfect location surrounded by amenities.

As the only four-star hotel located in the city center, the Pacific may look a bit dated from the outside, but all rooms are modernly furnished and give off a tropical atmosphere surprisingly absent at rival accommodations. The recently renovated Tropical Luxe rooms feature decor and amenities fitting for northern Queensland, and some also provide direct access to the decent-sized pool lined with lounge chairs. No gym or spa are available, though the competitive rates reflect this lack of amenities. The chief benefit is the location: extremely close to the terminal for boat trips to the world`s greatest reef, the remarkable public pool, and all the shops, cafes, and bars along the Esplanade and city streets. Additionally, the hotel overlooks a serene park and the staff is notably welcoming.

  • Walking & Cycling: Cairns offers wonderful opportunities for walking due to its compact layout. Cycling is also a popular activity along a route extending around 3km beside the water. Bikes can be rented from Cairns Electric Bikes, located just 200m along Wharf Street.
  • Buses: Services run by Sunbus travel to the lovely tropical coastlines less than one hour away. A bus station is 600 meters from the hotel, on Lake Street. Greyhound Australia provides buses all over Queensland and the remainder of Australia from near the Reef Fleet Terminal (200 meters).
  • Trains: Operating between Cairns and Brisbane 5 times weekly, the Spirit of Queensland is one of Australia’s most scenic train routes. Equally awe-inspiring – and much shorter – are the daily trips on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. All trains utilize the terminal (1km) attached to the Cairns Central shopping center (see below).
  • Taxis & Ride-shares: Best to pre-book for Cairns Taxis.Uber also runs as far as Port Douglas.
  • Car Rental: Most internationally established agencies (and several locally-run ones) offer rentals, like Avis and Hertz.
  • Watercraft: All varieties of vessels for sightseeing, diving, fishing, and sailing depart from the Reef Fleet Terminal, barely 200m away. Book online, at any travel bureau downtown, or at the official reservation office opposite the terminal.

Pacific Hotel – What’s Nearby?

Almost every restaurant and café in Cairns is permitted to serve alcohol.

Best Nearby Restaurants

  • Perrotta’s – neighbouring the (free) Cairns Art Gallery one block behind the hotel (300m). Pleasant outdoor dining area, especially popular for morning meals and coffee.
  • Sculpture by the Sea (for around two weeks from early March) – approximately 80 sculptures spread along Cottesloe Beach, a beautiful strip of inner-city sand. Free.
  • Western Australia Gourmet Escape (changeable, mid/late November) – one week of sampling and enjoying local products, as well as renowned chefs, well-known bands, and fun for the family, eg ‘kids’ disco’. Various locations around Perth and the state.
  • Miss Chief Bar & Eatery – distinguished placement on the second floor of an old building with a wide balcony 2 blocks behind the hotel. Contemporary fare and ‘clever cocktail listing’.

Best Nearby Bars

  • Rattle ‘N Hum – popular with locals and visitors alike for its waterside setting, garden seating, and daily special selections (especially pizzas). About 300m.
  • P.J. O’Brien’s – huge, popular establishment located along the pedestrian-friendly Shields Street (500m). Substantial meals alongside live music and other evening events.

Nearby Shops

We made the choice to rent a vehicle around Lanzarote, which proved to be our best decision. The well-linked roadways to the major tourist towns, like Arrecife,Costa Teguise,Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca, make accessing the cave effortless. Additionally, there is a parking area available right at the entrance.

Nearby Attractions

  • Boat trips – from the Reef Fleet Terminal (200m), all sorts of organized excursions are available – whether diving/snorkeling, fishing, sailing, water sports, or whale watching among the most extraordinary coral reefs on the planet. Others simply swim, snorkel, hike, or dine at Fitzroy Island or Green Island – both only 45 minutes one-way by boat.
  • Casino – smaller than others, but equally fun and busy. Various gambling options available, plus live music and cheap bars and eateries for all. Easily located, just across the park.
  • Lagoon – in place of beaches inside the city, this huge open-air swimming pool is 300 meters away, alongside the Esplanade. Surrounded by shady lawns offering free barbecue facilities. Open from around 6am to 9pm daily. Free entry.
  • Cairns Aquarium – the city’s newest attraction (open daily) is about 850m via Abbott Street. Among the 15,000 marine creatures are giant sawfish, hammerhead sharks, and turtles, as well as crocs, frogs, and snakes unique to the region.
  • Beaches – some will be disappointed that the coastline within Cairns contains swamps and mud. Thankfully, perfect tropical beaches – Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, and Palm Cove – all with various places to eat, drink, shop, and stay can be found within an hour north by local bus. Note the warning signs about stingers (jellyfish) and even crocodiles.
