Mount Vernon is an hour’s journey: take the metro to Huntington Station, where a connecting bus travels to the estate. Or you can make a memorable day of it through a picturesque two-hour boat cruise on the Potomac. The Spirit of Mount Vernon departs from Pier 4 at 6th and Water Streets SW daily at 8:30 am, arriving at 10:30am, and returns to the city at 1:30pm for a 3:30 arrival.

Throughout the cruise, interesting facts about local landmarks and history are shared with passengers. Beer, wine, soda, and snacks are available. 26. Stroll The National Harbor

This extensive complex offers 6 hotels, 23 dining establishments, 32 shops, and an incredible marina. It’s positioned on the Potomac River just beyond the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The National Harbor provides splendid views of Washington D.C. and Old Town Alexandria, as well as a 180-foot observation wheel – a particularly lovely experience at sunset. The spacious marina and pier give access to a number of local trips available to visitors, like a water taxi to Washington National games. If all this wasn’t enough, the National Harbor also hosts outdoor movies, a wine and food festival, a summer concert series, an annual road race, and a producer-only farmers’ market. Ride the antique carousel, only open during this event. Flower Mart features plant sales, floral and horticultural displays, small shops, tasty foods, fun activities for children. Tower climbs will be offered on Friday afternoon and Saturday during the event.
  • Gold Cup contest
    This is a great event that has been celebrated for over 80 years. Gold Cup is widely known as the crown jewel of steeple chase. There is an eclectic mix of individuals. You will find everything from the hats and pearls crowd to regular folks that are just there to take in the sights and sounds of Gold Cup. Regardless of financial status, this is a fun day at the races for all. Lots of food, fun and plenty of spirits are the backdrop of this local favorite. The event is typically held the first Saturday in May.
  • Memorial Day Weekend – Rolling Thunder
    Since 1988 war veterans and supporters have rumbled through our Nation’s Capitol over Memorial Day Weekend. The annual pilgrimage draws over 500,000 riders to the Metro DC area. Rolling Thunder blazes a trail through Washington D.C. on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend with a ride from the Pentagon to the memorials.

JULY in Washington, DC

  • 4th of July On the Mall
    The most anticipated of all yearly DC gatherings is the celebrated 4th of July festivities on the National Mall complete with famous musical performers, fireworks and a large parade. This is an event that one must attend at least once. Indeed, the crowds can be rather large but if you arrive early using public transit you will be in good order. Notably, the parade starts at the intersection of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue. The celebrations culminate with fireworks which are launched around 9pm. Most agree this is quite a long day and best suited for older children. Infants and toddlers tend to tire in the sun, heat and extended hours.

SEPTEMBER in Washington, DC

  • The Black Family Reunion Celebration is a cultural event that attracts more than 500,000 people annually. The 3-day festival centers on health, education and economic empowerment within the African American community. Throughout the occasion, the majestic sky is filled with hot air balloons. The festival also showcases a huge array of children`s activities, entertainment, artisans & crafters, vintage fire trucks and more. Located 60 miles from Washington D.C., the venue was once simply a Hot Air Balloon Festival but has expanded and evolved into the Shenandoah Valley Hot Air Balloon, Wine and Music Festival.
  • Halloween – Boo at the Zoo
    Trick or treat with the lions and elephants? The β€œBoo at the Zoo” Halloween event has been attracting little ghosts and goblins for years. Harry Potter, Dora the Explorer and even Spiderman can be seen at this fun, festive and safe Halloween gathering at the National Zoo in Washington DC for kids ages 2 to 12. Costumed volunteers hand out candy, snack food and special treats at 40+ treat stations. Animal encounters, zookeeper chats, Halloween decorations and zoo animals will be on hand for the fun.

DECEMBER in Washington, DC

  • National Holiday Tree Lighting Event
    Each year the White House rolls out a red carpet to welcome thousands of lucky guests who get the opportunity to see the lighting of the National Christmas Tree by the President of the United States. The event features musical performances, storytelling, and live bands alongside the First Family. An online lottery is held in advance of the occasion. Check the White House website in mid-November for full details. If you are a ticket holder with good fortune, bundle up the little ones. You will be outside for a few hours.
