Tropic of Capricorn – A modest and centrally located hotel with beach and street frontage.

(Note: The resort is closed for renovations as of Nov 1, 2020.)

`

This combined resort seems to exhibit a split persona: the Tropic of Capricorn facing the main street caters to boisterous groups of younger individuals, while the Bamboo Tropic fronting the beach is more upmarket and likely appeals more to couples. Collectively, choices range from sizable mixed dormitories to the Oceanfront Superior Rooms, with a separate lounge and balcony providing expended perspectives of the sea, village and undeveloped beach – though the security wiring surrounding the windows is off-putting. Less appealing are the compact Budget Rooms overlooking the sidewalk. The overall setting is lovely and the ambiance congenial. Additional attractions include the helpful staff; beachfront cafΓ©/bar; two pools each attracting differing sorts of guests; modest games room; and especially the location surrounded by dining and drinking places..

Tropic of Capricorn – The Basics

  • Location: 11 Wasawasa Road, on the bend along the main street through Wailoaloa Beach, on the main island of Viti Levu. Approximately 6 km from downtown Nadi and 8km from the airport.
  • Target Demographic: Primarily individuals under the age of thirty. Not well-suited for families.
  • Beach: The beach along Wailoaloa is fairly average. The sand is greyish and gritty, with more flotsam washed ashore than ideal. But the sea is calm, the breezes refreshing and the views delightful.
  • Views: A couple of rooms on the top floor of the main building face the sea, while others overlook the street or other rooms in close proximity.
  • Wireless internet: Free throughout the hotel and grounds for all guests.
  • Parking: The management can arrange for guests to park a car securely and for free nearby.
  • Free transportation services were provided from the airport and between islands, which were convenient amenities.
  • Steps to Book: Booking.com will offer the most competitive rates.
  • Phone: (679) 891 4141
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Website: tropicfiji.com

Tropic of Capricorn – Amenities

  • Pool: There are 2 small pools. Both would be quite crowded during periods of high occupancy, while the one facing the street is always busy and noisy.
  • Spa & Fitness Facilities: Not customary nor anticipated at a resort of this class and standard.
  • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: Not expected or provided as standard amenities.

Tropic of Capricorn – Food and Drink

  • Restaurant & Bar: Facing the ocean underneath the main building, The Tropic CafΓ© on the Beach offers good value meals, with more options than just the usual pizzas, burgers, and anything-with-fries. The bar is more affordable than most others.
  • Breakfast: Not included.
  • Room Service: Not expected or provided.

Tropic of Capricorn & Bamboo Tropic – Rooms

  • Room Types: Dormitories with 6, 8, or 12 beds – Budget Room with fan or air conditioning – Oceanfront Standard and Superior Rooms with air conditioning
  • Smoking Rooms: Not allowed in the rooms, but permitted in the grounds.
  • Best Room: The Oceanfront Superior Rooms have direct panoramic views across the sea from the balcony and down both ends of Wailoaloa beach and village. However, ocean views are somewhat obstructed by the cafΓ© located underneath.

Restaurants & Bars

Several attractions are located within a brief walk in the Wailoaloa area

  • Ghostship Bar & Grill – In the Smugglers Cove Beach Resort. Elegant decor and modern cuisine with a Polynesian influence. Ideal for brunch. Also, seafood platters, curries, and Chinese food. Children’s menu available.
  • Travellers Beach CafΓ© – Situated 100m up the road from a backpacker lodge, this establishment offers a huge menu alongside a convivial atmosphere and deliciously prepared, excellent-value meals.
  • Bitu CafΓ© – Attached to the above cafΓ©. Sandwiches and shakes.
  • Awesome Grill – Welcoming venue with indoor and outdoor seating for burgers, pastas and salads. Bring your own alcohol. About 500m from the beach at a crossroads.
  • DeLaurenti – Specialized European import food and wine shop, in Pike Place Market at 1st and Pike, across from the newsstand.

Nearby Market or Grocery

  • A small shopping complex opposite the Awesome Grill offers a reasonable supply of everyday essentials in a tiny store.

Local Transport

  • Most visitors use taxis, but locate (or arrange) one with a meter. Public buses and minivans head to downtown Nadi every 15-30 minutes via the shops and coffee shops on Queens Road.
