Although it’s smaller than most famous couple destinations, with all the fun and romantic things to do in Puerto Rico for couples, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t visit before.

Puerto Rico is a short trip away from the United States and it’s a popular destination for romantic retreats with lots of things to do, including beaches, historical cities, and adventure parks.

I’m a local Puerto Rican who knows all the best spots for an ideal couples vacation. In this post, I’ll spill the beans on 23 activities for couples that you can’t miss.

Old San Juan

Nothing screams romanticism like a historical city frozen in time, and that’s exactly what Old San Juan is.

Located in the capital city, Old San Juan is home to historical sites and beaches, which is why it’s a popular destination for a honeymoon in Puerto Rico.

Tour cobblestone streets and visit impressive historical structures like El Morro,La Fortaleza, and Castillo San Cristóbal.

If you just want to relax, stroll down Paseo de la Princesa, where you’ll find restaurants, local artisans, and the Raices Fountain. 

This is also one of the best spots to see the sunset painting orange colors across San Juan Bay.

To escape the heat, visit San Juan beaches like Playa Peña, La Playita de Condado, Escambrón Beach, and Ocean Park Beach. 

Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is one of Culebra’s beaches, an offshore island where you and your partner can make your romantic beach getaway dream come true.

Since there aren’t any resorts in it, Flamenco Beach stays as a tropical paradise with white soft sand and crystal clear waters. 

From there, you can hike to remote beaches like Tamarindo Grade and Carlos Rosario Beach, or rent a car to explore other breathtaking beaches like Zoni Beach.

You can even take a Culebra tour to the uninhabited Culebrita island to snorkel with sea turtles. 

Getting from San Juan to Culebra might be a hassle if you’re taking the ferry, but it’s worthwhile for its idyllic nature. You can also opt to take a direct flight from San Juan.

El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque National Forest is one of the popular attractions in Puerto Rico, because of everything it offers if you rather spend the day outdoors.

If you and your partner packed your hiking gear, you can put it to test on the great hiking trails that spread over El Yunque.

Try hiking the Mount Britton Trail to reach a viewing tower with one of the most romantic views of Puerto Rico or bathe in La Mina and Juan Diego Falls.

Your excursion to El Yunque National Forest should conclude with a visit to the nearby Luquillo Beach and Luquillo Food Kiosks.

The Tres Palmas Nature Reserve in Rincón is one of the west coast’s best romantic getaways for couples.

This marine reserve is home to Playa Escalera, where you can take long sunset walks with your significant other and take unique pictures on the concrete stairs inside the water.

Tres Palmas is also a great spot for snorkeling if you’re into underwater adventures.

Depending on the season you visit Puerto Rico, it’s possible to see diverse marine life including elkhorn coral, fish, and even turtles.

If you’re visiting in the winter, don’t miss other unique things to do in Rincon like going whale watching at Punta Higuera Lighthouse or surfing at the world-renowned Domes Beach.

Mosquito Bay

Vieques hosts one of the most unique experiences for couples visiting Puerto Rico: the Mosquito bioluminescent bay. 

The glowing water promises to make any date magical and the darkness of the bay will make you feel like you’re both alone.

If you’re not into kayaking, you can enjoy the view calmly with a boat tour.

If you’re staying in Vieques for a few days, you’ll also get to experience some of the best beaches in Vieques for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling.

One of the most memorable and romantic things to do in Vieques is to go horseback riding on Black Sand Beach.

Gilligan’s Island

Gilligan’s Island is one of the best Puerto Rico islands to visit. This cay is a popular Guanica site because of its clear shallow waters perfect for snorkeling or simply floating away.

You can reach the island through a private tour, kayaking, or jet skiing. 

There are a few picnic areas where you can enjoy lunch with your partner and soak in the sun. On one side of the island, you’ll also find a small beach-like area with coral reefs.

👉 Pro Tip:The Gilligan Island ferry is no longer running. Although the island is officially closed, you can visit on private excursions or kayak to the island yourself.

Los Morrillos Lighthouse

Los Morrillos Lighthouse is the best lighthouse to visit in Puerto Rico if you want to create a memory that lasts for a lifetime.

It’s said this Cabo Rojo site overlooks the exact point where the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea unite.

Just a short walk away, you’ll find the amazing Playa Sucia, one of the top beaches in Cabo Rojo.

👉 Pro Tip: The hours here are to visit the lighthouse itself, which is temporarily closed as of March 2024, but you can still visit the surrounding area daily.

Toro Verde Adventure Park

Fly through the mountains and conquer the longest zipline in America.

For a romantic trip filled with adrenaline, stop at Toro Verde Adventure Park.

Toro Verde is a park with multiple zip line circuits that go through the mountains of Puerto Rico.

Adventure enthusiasts can challenge each other to ride the longest zipline in America. “The monster” is 2.5km long.

You can also book an adventure night to ride the ziplines under the unpolluted sky of Orocovis.

Cavernas del Rio Camuy National Park

Descend into the largest underground cave system in Puerto Rico.

The Cavernas del Rio Camuy National Park is one of the most unique activities Puerto Rico has to offer for nature-loving couples.

Carved by the Camuy River, this Puerto Rico park is home to the world’s third-largest underground cave system.

While visiting this tourist attraction, couples can tour Cueva Clara and watch unique-looking stalactites and stalagmites.

The highlight of this tour in Puerto Rico will be the Empalme Sinkhole, through which the exterior light enters the cave making everything feel surreal.

Make sure to bring sneakers with a grip or hiking boots, as the floor in the cave is slippery.

Keep in mind the trolley isn’t functioning at the moment, so you’ll have to walk down to the cave.

👉 Pro Tip: Daily spaces are limited. Separate a ticket through a phone call or arrive really early at the park.

La Placita de Santurce

If you love crowds, salsa dancing, and delicious food, La Placita de Santurce is just what you need in your Puerto Rico itinerary.

La Placita de Santurce is located in San Juan, and it’s one of the popular activities to do in Puerto Ricofor party-loving couples.

La Placita de Santurce is a traditional market during the day, but after dark, it turns into a huge club with the best of local culture.

Even if every other attraction in San Juan is closed, you’ll always find a lively atmosphere at La Placita.

Museo de Arte de Ponce

Immerse yourself in one of Puerto Rico’s top art collections.

Art lovers will find great art galleries and museums throughout Puerto Rico, but The Ponce Art Museum is the top for a romantic date and one of the top things to do in Ponce.

This museum boasts an impressive collection of European and Puerto Rican art. Whether you like classic, modern, or contemporary art, you’ll find it at this museum.

Besides the art collection, the structure and gardens of the Ponce Art Museum are part of Puerto Rico’s architectural patrimony. 

Although the museum is open only on Fridays, check out its social media to learn about special workshops and activities on Saturdays.

👉 Pro Tip: As of March 2024, the museum is only partially open, as most of the building is under renovation.

Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve

Another romantic destination worth adding to your weekend getaways is the Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. One of the main tourist attractions in Fajardo, this nature reserve is home to Laguna Grande, one of the bio bays in Puerto Rico.

You can also explore at your own pace the hidden beaches of Fajardo inside de reserve like Playa Colorá, Playa Escondida, and Playa Canalejo. 

Finca Vista Bella

Taste a cup of Puerto Rican wine in the hidden mountains of Utuado.

Wine enthusiasts can add Finca Vista Bella to their list of things to do in Puerto Rico.

This family-owned vineyard in Utuado offers visitors a wine-tasting and special dining experience. 

The romantic atmosphere makes this place perfect for a date. Although it’s somewhat difficult to reach it, once you arrive at Finca Vista Bella, you won’t want to leave.

And while you’re in the area, check out other Utuado fun attractions, including the Cueva del Arco and some of the best coffee farms in Puerto Rico.

Carabalí Adventure Rainforest Park

Horseback riding is one of the best ways to experience El Yunque National Rainforest. And, at the Rainforest Carabalí Adventure Park, you can do exactly that.

Choose between 1 and 2-hour tours and see unique flora and fauna while riding. After your tour, you’ll stop at the Mameyes River to take a refreshing dip. Don’t worry if you’re a first-timer, you’ll receive training from your guides before starting your trip.

Museo Castillo Serrallés

Take a mixology tour in the house of the creators of Rum Don Q.

Museo Castillo Serrallés is a museum located in Ponce. The revival-style house belonged to the Serrallés family, the creators of Rum Don Q. The historical tour will take you through the bedrooms, dining rooms, and kitchen where you’ll appreciate original furniture, clothing, and artifacts that belonged to the family. 

If you want to do something more interactive with your partner, take the Blend of Experiences Tour, which also includes a mixology workshop and a virtual reality experience.

Finish your date with wine and tapas at Panorama 180, one of the best restaurants in Ponce located in Cruceta del Vigia, across Castillo Serrallés.

Condado Lagoon

Have a romantic sunset date in the middle of this popular lagoon.

Your dates in Puerto Rico don’t have to be pricey! Head to Condado Lagoon and rent a kayak to see the sunset from the lagoon. Near the Condado Lagoon, you’ll find dozens of kayak and paddleboard rentals like Aqua Fitness and SUP Action Paddleboard Co.

The lagoon is protected from strong sea currents by an inlet, which means it’s also safe to visit even as a beginner. 

During your visit, keep an eye out for turtles and manatees.

Piñones

Eat everything you can at this beachfront community in Loíza.

Piñones is a beachfront community in Loíza frequented by foodies and beach enthusiasts. Known as the fritter capital of Puerto Rico, Piñones has dozens of food kiosks where you can find the best Puerto Rican food.

Try alcapurrias, pastelillos, sorullitos, and balaítos if you’re up for street food. But, you also find seafood restaurants where you can try mofongo, red snapper, and seafood salad. 

After you’re done hopping from kiosk to kiosk, visit La Pocita de Piñones, often ranked as one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico.

Icacos

There aren’t any public ferries to Icacos, but private tour operators run some of the best daily Puerto Rico boat tours that provide all your needs, so you and your partner can go snorkeling or lie on the beach without any worries.

La Pared

Cayo Májimo, Cayo Enriquito, and Cayo Enriquez are less known and often less crowded, perfect for visiting if you want to escape the large tour crowds.

Don’t be fooled by Escambrón Beach’s urban location in San Juan – the beach still offers plenty of nature fun for beach-loving duos.

Escambrón is divided into multiple parts; one of them even has artificial reefs where you can spot marine life. If you’re lucky, you can swim next to sea turtles in relatively shallow waters.

You can snorkel on your own or on a tour.
