I’m a Yakima, Washington local and a craft beer enthusiast with insights into the best Yakima breweries.

The Yakima Valley produces 75% of the nation’s hops, so it’s no surprise that breweries are some of the best Yakima attractions. Find a galaxy of IPAs, maltier brews, and the whole mosaic of Yakima beers in this guide.

I also cover spots with food menus, spacious patios, and activities, plus family-friendly breweries where you can even bring your pup.

11 Best Yakima Breweries

Bale Breaker Brewing Company

This family-owned business has one of the widest distributions in the Yakima Valley.

Bale Breaker is one of the most popular Yakima breweries — and often a stop on Yakima craft beer tours.

The Bale Breaker brewery is run by the fourth generation of a family of hop growers. The beer they make is high quality and you couldn’t ask for more local ingredients. The brewery is located on their family-owned farm!

Abundant hops makes for a more hop-forward beer menu here. Topcutter IPA is one of the most popular, but there are also pale ales and other varieties. The Dormancy Stout is an awesome alternative for those who prefer maltier flavor profiles. The property has a small taproom and a spacious patio that is perfect on a sunny summer evening.

Single Hill Brewing

This brewery in downtown Yakima is one of the most popular gathering places in town.

Single Hill, along with Bale Breaker, leads the Yakima craft brewing scene. Single Hill hosts weekly events such as bingo, trivia nights, and much more (Christmas markets, for one). Single Hill also has a large and varied tap list with lighter options like pilsners and lagers, as well as maltier brews alongside the standard IPAs.

It’s located downtown, one of the best places to stay in Yakima, and is a popular gathering place. The brewery serves food but is also a great stop before or after visiting one of the many amazing restaurants in Yakima.

Valley Brewing Co.

Find this cozy local brewery tucked away in Yakima’s northern Fruitvale neighborhood.

This brewery sits like a little oasis amidst the more industrial surroundings of Yakima’s northern end. It’s a cozy place to come and chat with locals and sip away at an IPA (their specialty). There are a few non-IPA items on the menu, too, such as wines and rotating taps of other beers.

Valley Brewing is also a great place to pick up a souvenir or two. It has one of the more varied swag collections among breweries in the Yakima Valley.

Cowiche Creek Brewing

Cowiche Creek offers one of the best combos of views and brews in the Valley.

Cowiche Creek Brewing Co. is one of a few craft breweries located in the small Washington towns right outside Yakima. This is a great place to go in summer to take in the views of the rolling hills dotted by rustic farms which characterize the Yakima Valley.

Cowiche Creek has some excellent hop-forward brews, especially the fresh hop IPA. It also offers some simple, but delicious food such as burgers and other pub favorites.

5th Line Brewing

Hops and hockey are the specialties of this sports-themed brewery on the east side of town.

5th Line Brewing began with a passion for cold beer and warm postgame vibes. Hockey gear adorns the walls here and it’s a cozy place to go anytime. The food menu is simple but delicious, featuring pizza, nachos, and pretzels. The venue is also dog-friendly, so you can bring along your doggo when you go for a drink.

🍺 Love beer and country music? Come to Yakima in September for the Hop Country Music Festival! It showcases the best of local musical and brewing talent and is one of the best things to do in Washington state.

Wandering Hop

This family-owned brewery combines love for beer and travel into one of the best hidden gems in Yakima.

Wandering Hop is one of the best hidden gems in the Yakima Valley brewery scene. It’s a tiny place just off Lincoln Avenue and super cozy! The name comes from the founder’s love of travel and discovering global varieties of beer.

It rarely gets over-crowded and has a small-town pub feel. This is a good place to go for a pint and a chat with locals. It’s also fun to talk to the owner about his travels in pursuit of better beer. The beers here are great, with several variations of IPAs, but also maltier drafts and even a sour or two.

Bron Yr Aur

This snug spot outside Yakima specializes in the maltier side of the beer world.

📍 Google Maps | 🍻 Bron Yr Aur Website | 🍽️ Food Served | 📞 (509) 653-1109

Bron Yr Aur translates from Welsh to “hill of gold” and it’s a real gold mine for anyone who likes darker, maltier beers. This is also one of the most popular places for pizza in the area. You can reserve heated gazebos, though the main interior space is also cozy. Either way, this is the perfect place for driving away the gloom of a gray winter day.

Bron Yr Aur is also unique in that it has a distillery on the property. The Meals for Veterans program is yet another unique feature. Your patronage goes towards paying for a meal for a US veteran.

The Outskirts Brewing Co.

This is the best place in the Valley for good beer, great food, and country vibes.

📍 Google Maps | 🍻 Outskirts Brewing Co. Website | 🍽️ Food Served | 📞 (509) 698-2275

The Outskirts is so named because it sits on the dividing line between Yakima and Selah, Washington. This is the place to go if you love country music, craft cocktails, and good grub. Its motto is “first-class for the working class” and it lives up to it.

The property is large with a huge backyard, a restaurant and bar area, and a taproom area with a separate menu. The restaurant area and expansive patio, yard, and taproom are kid-friendly, but the bar is off-limits to minors.

This is a great place for live music with regular performances throughout the week. One of the founders, Cody Beebe, and his band are a regular act at the Hop Country festival. Another one of the brewers here has garnered some fame in the past. He’s worked on recognizable beers including Fremont’s Lush IPA and Silver City’s Tropic Haze.

Varietal Beer Company

The beers at this taproom in Sunnyside, Washington will brighten your day, no matter the weather!

📍 Google Maps | 🍻 Varietal Brewing Website | 🍽️ Food Trucks Nearby | 📞 (509) 515-2222

Varietal Brewing is in the next town over (Sunnyside), but I included it because its beers are some of the best I’ve had since moving to Yakima! It has a good variety of beers ranging from lighter lagers to hoppy IPAs to heavy-hitting barleywines.

Varietal distributes its delicious beer to other cities in Washington and even into Oregon, usually at smaller grocers and specialty stores. It’s worth a little extra looking around, though. Twine Climber is one of its most famous flagship IPAs. The Sunflight Citrus Wheat is the perfect summer sipper, featuring a bright and citrusy flavor profile.

Public House of Yakima

Public House is a great place to get a “cross-section” of the best of local beers.

📍 Google Maps | 🍻 Public House Website | 🍽️ Food Served | 📞 (509) 426-2043

Public House does not brew its own beer. Rather, it offers patrons a wide selection of drafts from some of the best breweries in the Pacific Northwest. A small, but tasty menu of flatbreads, salads, and other pub fare complements the extensive tap list.

Public House has another location in the eastern Terrace Heights neighborhood. The two venues serve similar drinks and grub (Public House East has several sandwiches on the menu that aren’t available at Public House West). The eastern establishment also has a larger indoor seating area, whereas the western branch has a bigger patio.

The Tap

The unique self-serve model makes The Tap the best place to sample local beers.

📍 Google Maps | 🍻 The Tap Website | 🍽️ Food Served | 📞 (509) 367-6991

The Tap is another fine establishment that doesn’t make its own beer, but serves a great variety of local brews from the Yakima Valley and beyond. It also has a unique wall of self-serve taps.

You won’t be able to sample for free here, but you do get the freedom to try as many as you like. It’s a great place to go if you want to try something new or are feeling indecisive — and you won’t have to worry about annoying the bartender!

The Tap is located in downtown Yakima, close to Single Hill Brewing and many of the best restaurants. It also has a small, but delicious menu of traditional pub favorites.
