St. George is one of the best places to visit in Utah for fun outdoor activities, and this is the primary draw of the city for many. Still, deciding where to stay in St. George comes down to your travel style.

Bloomington

👉 Best Area For Country Club Activities | ✨ Best Bloomington Hotels: Bloomington Country ClubVillas at SouthgateHampton Inn & Suites St. George

Bloomington is located in Southwestern Washington County and is only 10 minutes from the St. George Utah Temple. The easiest way to reach Bloomington is off exit 4 on the I-15, the same exit for the Bloomington Country Club.

Bloomington is the site of older, more rustic Utah homes surrounding the Bloomington golf course. This is the ideal place to stay for St. George visitors who like to par-tee (get it?). However, Bloomington is a little out of the way of most hiking and outdoor activities, so it may not be the best place to stay for those who visit St. George for this purpose.

The Bloomington Country Club is one of the best places to stay in Bloomington for golfers and other Utah visitors who like to stay in modern-chic accommodations.

Pros of Staying in Bloomington Neighborhood:

  • Close access to the golf course and other country club amenities
  • Close access to the I-15
  • Quiet at night

Cons of Staying in Bloomington Neighborhood:

  • Lean on accommodation choices

Middleton

👉 Best Area For Families | ✨ Best Middleton Hotels: TownePlace Suites St. GeorgeComfort Inn St. George NorthPrivate Oasis Home

Middleton is the halfway point between St. George City Center and Washington. This newer neighborhood skirts local red rock cliff areas perfect for hiking and exploring slot canyons.

Besides hiking trails, one of the biggest attractions in Middleton is the newly renovated Middleton Park. This 1-acre park includes a covered pavilion with picnic tables and a large barbeque, a full basketball court, a grassy field for soccer or frisbee, and a jungle gym.

Middleton is one of the best places to stay in St. George for families with children because it’s farther from the busy chaos of downtown. It’s also close to fun recreation spaces like Forest Park and Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.

The rooms at TownePlace Suites St. George come with full kitchens, making it easy to save money on food for the whole family. The Comfort Inn St. George North features a complimentary breakfast and an indoor swimming pool, ideal for staying cool on hot desert days.

Washington

a large stone building with a mountain range

👉 Best Area For Peace and Quiet | ✨ Best Washington Hotels: Mountain View HomeThe All-AmericanFamily Desert Oasis Home

Washington is located in south-central Washington County and belongs to the greater St. George metropolitan area. What was once a stomping ground for Mormon pioneers milling cotton is now a quiet residential area on the outskirts of town.

Staying in Washington gets you a bit closer to the Utah National Parks, some of which are home to the top hiking trails in Utah. Washington is also much quieter than other St. George neighborhoods, thanks to its position away from the major shopping centers and other big city attractions.

Mountain View Home is one of the top rental picks in the area and includes an outdoor pool and a fitness room. It’s less than 11 miles from Saint George Municipal Airport. The All-American is another top option in the neighborhood and one of this list’s most luxurious.

Pros of Staying in Washington Neighborhood:

  • Quieter than other St. George neighborhoods
  • Closer to Utah national parks
  • Hotels with a fitness center

Cons of Staying in Washington Neighborhood:

  • Farther from big city amenities
  • Fewer entertainment options

Santa Clara

a large brick building with a clock tower

👉 Best Area For History Buffs | ✨ Best Santa Clara Hotels: Lava Falls at EntradaRed RockParadise Village

Santa Clara is a small Western suburb in Washington County. This up-and-coming neighborhood receives more visitors each year thanks to its scenic location by classic Utah sandstone cliffs.

This historic town once served as the first fort in the area, Fort Clara, built by Mormon settlers in the 1800s. Today, it’s the site of several important Utah attractions like the LDS church, Jacob Hamblin Home Museum, and the Relief Society House.

The Lava Falls at Entrada is one of the coolest accommodations in the area with a rock pool that your kids are sure to love. Additionally, the Red Rock accommodation is the perfect place to stay for a classic Utah experience (and my top pick). Sip coffee on your outdoor patio with a view of Navajo Sandstone gorges in the near distance at this top St. George spot.

Pros of Staying in Santa Clara Neighborhood:

  • Historic neighborhood with educational museums
  • Accommodations are close and personal to picturesque sandstone cliffs
  • Quieter than other neighborhoods

Cons of Staying in Santa Clara Neighborhood:

  • Farther from the main St. George attractions
  • Fewer accommodations to choose from
  • Not as many restaurants as downtown St. George

Hurricane

a small town with a lot of cars on the road

👉 Best Area For Outdoor Activities | ✨ Best Hurricane Hotels: Hurricane Hideaway LodgingMy Place HotelGreek Goddess

Hurricane is located 25 minutes from the St. George Utah Temple in Washington County. Hurricane Valley is rising in popularity as an entry town to the Utah national parks, due to its very close proximity.

Hurricane is close to some of the top things to do in Utah like the Zion Narrows and Angels Landing hikes in Zion National Park. Hurricane is also a short drive from Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park.

The Hurricane Hideaway Lodging accommodation is in the perfect location between both St. George and the Zion National Park gateway communities. My Place Hotelis another top choice for accommodation in Hurricane. This family-friendly hotel won’t break the bank and even comes with included breakfast.

👉 Pro Tip: For visitors interested in camping near Hurricane, I recommend checking out Quail Creek Campground right on the Quail Creek Reservoir. It’s only $28 per night for a primitive site and $40 per night for a site with water and power. Reserve a campsite here.

Pros of Staying in Hurricane Neighborhood:

  • Close to major Utah state and national parks
  • Affordable accommodation options

Cons of Staying in Hurricane Neighborhood:

  • Farther from St. George attractions
  • Not many hotels and restaurants to choose from
  • Accommodation can fill to capacity during the high season

Springdale

👉 Best Area For National Park Access | ✨ Best Springdale Hotels: Holiday Inn Express SpringdaleZion Park MotelCliffrose Springdale

Springdale is located 40 miles east of St. George in Washington County and is the gateway town to Zion National Park. It’s outside of town to be sure, but I’m including Springdale in my list of places to stay in St. George for those who prioritize proximity to Zion.

This small desert town caters to tourists and has hotels within walking distance of the national park entrance. There are also plenty of bike rentals, gear shops, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Famous Zion red rock monoliths can be seen from just about everywhere in Springdale, making this one of the most photogenic desert towns in the greater St. George area.

I usually camp on free BLM land right outside of Springdale that I find on iOverlander, but there are tons of charming places to stay in Springdale for non-campers as well. Holiday Inn Express Springdale is a cabin-style hotel with an outdoor fire pit surrounded by red rock scenery.

Zion Park Motelis another top choice in Springdale. The motel is just as scenic but is easier on the pocketbook, making it the top choice for Zion visitors on a budget.

Pros of Staying in Springdale Neighborhood:

  • Close to the Zion National Park entrance
  • Plenty of tourist attractions
  • 360-degree desert scenery

Cons of Staying in Springdale Neighborhood:

  • Farther away from St. George’s big city amenities
  • Cell signal can be spotty
  • Gas prices and food can be pricey

Book Accommodation in Advance

Accommodation in St. George often fills to capacity, especially during the peak season months of September-November. Book well in advance to secure your accommodation, especially if staying in a smaller neighborhood like Washington or Hurricane.

Know When to Go

Utah is very much a desert state. Visit St. George in the fall to avoid scorching desert temperatures that often soar higher than 100 degrees.

Winter can also be a pleasant time to visit St. George without heavy tourist crowds, but be sure to dress warmly.

Don’t Rule Out Camping

a car parked on the side of a dirt road

Camping is one of the best ways to save money on your trip to Utah and there’s no shortage of campsites. With the help of apps like iOverlander, you’re guaranteed to find free BLM public land every night of your trip.

Pack Hiking Essentials

Southern Utah offers such a dense collection of hiking trails and slot canyons, so don’t forget to pack the hiking essentials. Also bring extra food, water, and a sun hat, as the sun in the Utah desert is no joke.

Consider Day Trips

a rocky area with rocks and a mountain

I highly recommend venturing outside of St. George to visit other superb southern Utah destinations. Bryce Canyon National Park is 2 hours from St. George but is one of the top national parks in Utah and is well worth the drive.

Kanab is another top Utah destination that’s only 1 ½ hours from St. George. There are so many fun things to do in Kanab like slot canyons and desert lakes that make this day trip a southern Utah highlight.
