Of all the hiking paths in the San Juan Mountains, few rival the recognition of Bridal Veil Falls. On this forested trail, you’ll witness spectacular mountain views and pass two additional waterfalls. Though just 2 miles in length, this challenging hike gains over 800 feet in elevation.

If some in your group aren’t suited for a strenuous hike, I would recommend taking a vehicle to Bridal Veil Falls instead. You can reach this iconic Telluride landmark by driving partway up the winding Black Bear Pass Switchbacks.

🚗 How to Get There: From downtown Telluride, take the E. Highway 145 Spur to the Black Bear Pass Switchbacks. Note this route is closed from October – May, and should only be attempted by experienced drivers in high clearance, 4×4 vehicles. If you’re up for the ride, book your Jeep on Discover Cars.

Ready to take on one of the more challenging hikes near Tucson? Head north! Picacho Peak State Park is a place of mystery, with the focal point being the rugged spire extending skyward beside the I-10 freeway. Though only a 3-mile trail, it typically takes around 3 hours to complete given the near-2,000 foot elevation gain.

Bear Creek Falls

Bear Creek Trail is another renowned hike in Telluride, Colorado. Easily reachable, the trailhead is found on South Pine Street just two blocks from the complimentary gondola ride. The moderate, 5-mile route follows a wide path through an aspen and pine forest.

As you approach Bear Creek Falls, multiple trails lead to incredible viewpoints. Given its popularity, you’re surely to meet a local or tourist willing to photograph you!

👉 Pro Tip: It is common to encounter unrestrained dogs, especially dogs without a leash, on this trail in Telluride. Hikers with dogs in training or that are easily distracted may want to consider other, less busy routes.

Downtown Telluride

Colorado Avenue is the heart of this historic mining town. It’s full of après-ski entertainment and fun for every season. Explore excellent downtown hotels, restaurants and bars, boutiques, galleries, and more.

Nine tight switchbacks follow, then an ascent into Ingram Basin and Mineral Basin. The driving route concludes at Red Mountain Pass, a section of the famed Million Dollar Highway, where even more breathtaking views await.

When visiting Telluride, Colorado in winter, consider taking snowmobiling tours with Telluride Outfitters. No prior experience is needed, and even children can participate on the 2-hour trip to Alta Ghost Town.

If you prefer a more challenging experience, consider the Dunton Hot Springs or Full Day Backcountry packages. Both permit you to soak in natural hot springs, a perfect complement to a day playing in the powder.

Nordic Skiing

Cross-country skiing is a must-try activity in the mountain town of Telluride alongside alpine skiing at Telluride Ski Resort. Popular trail options to explore include those at Telluride Town Park and Valley Floor as well as Priest Lake, Trout Lake, and Mountain Village, all offering scenic groomed terrain.

Horseback Riding and Sleigh Rides

There are a couple local breweries crafting beers for patrons to sample – Icicle Brewing and the Blewett Brewing Company. We opted for Icicle as they offer one to two ciders and a canned gluten free beer for selection. The ambiance on Icicle Brewing`s patio can`t be beat, especially when live music is playing on a warm summer evening.

Equestrians can explore the San Juan Mountains anytime throughout the year. But in winter, when the pines are heavily laden with snow, it creates an especially magical atmosphere. Telluride Horseback Adventures and Telluride Wranglers offer trail rides of varying lengths. Alternatively, gathering the whole family for a sleigh ride is a charming way to celebrate the holidays season.

The first and biggest picturesque lake is found 3 miles into the trail. As you ascend higher to the second and third lakes, panoramic views astound. For those experienced and brave, Mt. Sneffels` summit, one of Colorado’s highest peaks, is just ahead.
