What is zipline?

Zipline, zip line or zip-line, however you choose to spell it (they all seem to be considered right spelling according to Wikipedia) is one of the most fun and thrilling experiences that you can have on your travel bucket list.

A zipline is a pulley suspended on a cable and mounted on a slope. It’s designed to enable a person to travel from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable, moving only with the pull from gravity.

It has become a very popular tourist activity in destinations with particularly scenic landscapes.

Whether it’s amongst the canopy treetops of a rainforest or through the cliffs of a canyon, you’re always guaranteed a thrilling experience.

About Omis & the Cetina Canyon

Omis is one of the cutest towns in Croatia, and a must visit on any Croatia bucket list and Croatia itinerary, even if you don’t go zip-lining. It’s located at the mouth of the Cetina River, where it meets the Adriatic Sea.

It’s a very scenic town, with the tall cliffs of the Cetina Canyon behind it and the sea in front. It has a very well preserved historical town centre, which you can explore before or after your zipline experience.

The Cetina Canyon is a canyon that runs for 100km along the Cetina River, and it’s the perfect destination for an adventurous holiday. Besides zipline, you can also go rafting in the Cetina River.

The canyon is extremely scenic, with sweeping landscapes and a stunning natural environment. It’s one of the most popular attractions in Europe.

Zipline in Omis – the key info

The zip-line in Omis is one of the most famous in the world. It’s composed by eight wires, for a total length of 2,100 metres.

The first wire is the longest, with its 700 metres in length, as well as the highest at 150 metres above ground level. It’s also the most scenic, not just in this zip-line tour but probably in the whole world.

We did the tour with Zipline Croatia and paid 400 HRK per person for our zip-line tour.

The tour will last around 3-4 hours, including the transfer from Omis to the starting wire and back. You will have two professional guides accompanying you the whole time.

Our experience doing a zip-line tour in the Cetina Canyon

We visited Omis and did our zip line experience as a day trip from Split. You can easily reach Omis from Split by public bus, the price is around 3 HRK and takes around half an hour.

We spent the morning wandering around Omis, exploring the cute old town and the view from Starigrad Fortress before heading to our zipline tour.

We had booked the early afternoon tour, so that we could have lunch in Omis before.

If you don’t want to worry about making your own way there you can join a Split tour, which includes the transfer from Split. For example, the Omis zipline tour on GetYourGuide includes also transfers from Split.

The meeting point for Zipline Croatia is just on the outskirts of Omis. Here they checked us in and gave us our zipline gear, after that we all boarded a tiny coach and went to the start point of the zipline experience.

First we did a healthy & safety run down and zipline practice on a tiny zipline wire. We all tried it on a wire that was only a few metres above the ground, so that we could practice breaking and stopping.

After that we did a short hike to the first wire. The hike was only about 15 minutes, but the views were gorgeous, and a great preview of what was ahead.

The first wire is the longest and most scenic one.

To be honest that’s a bit of a shame, since we were so terrified we felt like we didn’t properly enjoy the view the first time. By the time we got to our final wires we were more confident, but the views weren’t as spectacular.

That said, it’s still an awesome experience. You will have two guides, one that will go ahead of you to receive you and unhook your gear, and one behind you who straps you to the wire and gives you the initial push.

After the first wire the others are a variety of long wires that cross over the Cetina Canyon and shorter ones that will have you flying through the trees.

It was very different from my zipline experience in Costa Rica, where all the wires were through the canopy and trees.

One thing to note is that they won’t let you hold a camera, GoPro or phone during any of the wires, since they want to ensure you’re using both hands to slow down and brake.

There’s also a risk of you maybe dropping it into the Cetina Canyon, and nobody wants that. You can only film your ziplining towards the end of the tour, when there is a scenic wire that isn’t too long or high.

If you want to film it they will get you to do the wire in tandem, where one person holds the camera and the other brakes.

The balance between excitement, gorgeous nature and incredible views made it an incredible experience. Ziplining in Omis was one of the highlights of our Split itinerary, and I can highly recommend it to everyone.
