Best Hotels in Ho Chi Minh City
• ◦ Best Family-Friendly Accommodations in Ho Chi Minh City

In terms of population size, prestige, and appeal to visitors, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) surpasses Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Still commonly called Saigon, tourists find it spread out but relatively easy to navigate, even though this former colonial capital is home to about eight million residents.

Most guests opt to explore the area formally designated as District 1, split into seven distinct quarters promoting tourism. The core of District 1, nearby the Opera House and People’s Committee Building (City Hall), maintains an elegant atmosphere despite limited foot traffic. The streets are home to some of Vietnam’s premier hotels, upscale boutiques, and eateries rivaling major European cities in quality.

Staying along the Saigon River provides striking views, though the polluted waters and crowded traffic on the riverside road somewhat diminish the appeal. (Opt for the backstreets for a calmer option.) The sophisticated, convenient yet less busy City Center offers apartment complexes ideal for families and longer stays. Government ministries, foreign consulates, upscale apartments, and several excellent hotels line the quiet, spacious streets of District 3.

Phạm Ngũ Lão is still officially situated within District 1 and the undisputed focal point for budget travelers. This compact region has many lodgings, cafés, shops, travel agencies, and bars. Some visitors rarely venture further beyond. Along the comparatively quieter and more spacious roads around Phạm Ngũ Lão are tourist amenities and great-value hotels.

The pulsing region around Bến Thành Market is more authentic and less busy than Phạm Ngũ Lão. It provides excellent amenities, especially for travelers on a budget. Thanh Binh is outside District 1 and approximately 5km northwest of the Opera House. The location is home to newer hotels generally constructed for their ease of access to the airport.

Getting Around Ho Chi Minh City

a double decker bus is driving down the streetbikes parked next to each other

Phạm Ngũ Lão in Ho Chi Minh City is undoubtedly the focal point for budget-conscious visitors. This area provides an astonishing assortment of transportation choices. Along Phạm Ngũ Lão Street, guests can join the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Saigon and, very similar, Ho Chi Minh City Red Bus Sightseeing Tour and discover ample taxis. The preferred taxi corporation is Vinasun. The most affordable and speediest manner to navigate is on Grab motorbike taxis. Employ the outstanding ride-sharing application (similar to Uber) for a established charge instead of dealing with chauffeurs straight on the streets.

Also from this confined and densely populated region, visitor buses depart for places across Vietnam and into neighboring Cambodia. Many travel agencies, especially along Phạm Ngũ Lão Street, market bus, boat, plane, and train tickets for other domestic and regional destinations.

Safety in Ho Chi Minh City

Suffering injuries from a vehicle while crossing roadways or even walking adjacent sidewalks is the most serious risk for all visitors. Exercise more caution than at your place of residence and make two assumptions: all will disregard traffic rules, and pedestrians have absolutely no protections.

Take the usual precautions around crowded streets, markets, and bus stations where bag-snatching and pickpocketing sometimes occur. The safest area in HCMC is Thanh Binh, between downtown and the airport. It’s a middle-class suburban region distant from the tourist crowds.

Best Areas in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for…

  • Best Areas in Ho Chi Minh City for First-Time Visitors: Around the Opera House and District 3
The metropolitan area of HCMC can feel congested and noisy. Getting around on foot or by taxi can at times feel overwhelming, even for those accustomed to navigating Southeast Asian cities. Anyone visiting HCMC or Vietnam for the initial time should avoid lodging in crowded zones along the Saigon River and around Phạm Ngũ Lão. In stark difference, the area surrounding the Opera House is tranquil yet convenient and home to some of Vietnam’s most refined shops and luxury hotels. District 3 has several noteworthy attractions and many more within walking distance, and the wide, leafy roads are ideal for strolling and even cycling
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Sightseeing: City Centera car is parked in front of a tall building

Numerous sights around the central area distinguish Ho Chi Minh City. These include the haunting War Remnants Museum,Reunification Hall (Independence Palace), Jade Emperor Pagoda, Thiên Hậu temple, and Bến Thành Market (see later). A number of striking structures stand in the central region of District 1. Some incorporate the Opera House, the People’s Committee Building (City Hall), which is closed to the public, the Central Post Office, and the Notre Dame Cathedral (still being renovated). Go to all the locations independently or on a one-day organized bus tour booked at your hotel or through one of the many travel agencies situated around major hotels. City Center is the best base for exploring these sights on foot and the impressive Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

  • Top Areas in Ho Chi Minh City for Families: City Center and Thanh Binh.
  • a swimming pool with people playing in it

The primary concerns for families traveling with children are the crowds, noise, and traffic congestion, especially around Phạm Ngũ Lão Street and along the Saigon River. Roads near the Opera House are comparatively tranquil, but few hotels cater to kids. There are two excellent bases, though. In the City Center, enormous apartment complexes mainly accommodate long-term businesspeople and diplomats but can be rented nightly by tourists. Most apartments have kitchen facilities and up to three bedrooms, and the pools, gardens, and playgrounds are spacious. Also, a section of the Thanh Binh district has several high-end hotels offering terrific amenities for entire families plus convenience to the airport.

  • The best area in Ho Chi Minh City for couples is around the Opera House.
  • There are several spots in Vietnam that are potentially more intimate than Ho Chi Minh City. Some praiseworthy possibilities include the charming, antique town of Hoi An, the Vietnamese honeymoon capital in the cooler highlands of Dalat, and the spectacular tropical island of Phu Quoc. Within the core of HCMC, away from the hustle and bustle, crowds, vehicle traffic, and air pollution issues, is a locale housing numerous romantic and historic hotels surrounded by beautiful structures like the Opera House and People’s Committee Building (City Hall). Phạm Ngũ Lão typically sees extreme congestion not ideally suited for a private escape. The luxury hotels along the Saigon River provide superbly appointed rooms (and soundproofing), but noise concerns persist outside and parts of the river experience pollution issues.

  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Atmosphere and Culture: Around Bến Thành Market
The most vibrant area of any Southeast Asian metropolis centers around the markets, continuing to be a staple of Vietnamese daily life despite the rise of Western-style malls and supermarkets. Comparable to Phạm Ngũ Lão yet smaller, more hushed, and with less tourists is the vicinity surrounding Bến Thành Market. Visitors can spend hours meandering this neatly organized indoor bazaar where 99% of patrons are locals purchasing, selling, and bargaining. At the rear of the marketplace on the surrounding side streets are plenty of establishments for shopping, dining, and experiencing Vietnamese culture, where vehicle commotion and noise levels are more palatable.
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Peace and Quiet: Around the Opera Housea swimming pool with a pool table and chairs

Ho Chi Minh City can be an overcrowded and overwhelming place, where even the pleasant parks and riverside seem unable to provide respite from the heavy traffic flow. Yet, located in the middle of the city is a delightful area surrounding the Opera House, People`s Committee Building (City Hall), and the statue of Ho Chi Minh. Luxury boutiques and world-renowned hotels with excellent eateries and bars line the rarely used streets. The tiny parks provide a haven for romantic locals and weary tourists looking to unwind.

  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Panoramas: Along Saigon River
While the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City following the War, the Saigon River retained its original name. Primarily utilized for cargo shipping, parts of the river appear brown and heavily contaminated. However, it can still be enjoyed on boat tours with Saigon River Tour (among other companies), dinner cruises (book at any travel agency), or hydrofoil to Vung Tau. These depart from the terminal opposite the busy roundabout and noticeable cluster of high-rise hotels. Attempts to beautify the riverfront include a path and some grass, but any enjoyment is lost due to the six-lane road running alongside it. Even endeavoring to cross the road during a green walk signal presents risks. In any case, the road and roundabout facing the river are crowded with luxurious high-rise hotels where rooms, bars, restaurants, and often swimming pools provide extensive perspectives across the water and to the opposite side of the city
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for History: District 3a green and yellow fire hydrant in front of a building

Due to French colonial rule and the Vietnam/American War, much of what was known as Saigon was left neglected or destroyed. The city had to undergo construction starting from the mid-1970s to almost rebuild from scratch. Therefore, unlike places like Hanoi, Ho An and other Southeast Asian cities, there isn`t a history from the pre-colonial or colonial eras. District 3 is home to the War Remnants Museum, a poignant yet understated exhibition on the devastating impacts of the War on the country and its people, and the Southern (Vietnamese) Women’s Museum. Within the extensive parklands where District 3 adjoins District 1 is the Reunification Hall (Independence Palace), another must-visit attraction. Additional museums worth exploring to gain understanding of the colonial history (French and American) are the Museum of Ho Chi Minh City and The History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City (at the entrance to the worthwhile Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens). While possessing similar names, both facilities are easily accessible on foot from hotels in District 3.

  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Food and Restaurants: Around the Opera Housea living room filled with lots of books and posters

The bustling area of Phạm Ngũ Lão offers some of the most delicious pizzas, tacos, and curries imaginable at Vietnamese-run eateries. Prices are reasonable, and service is prompt, but every dining place is loud. To savor a meal and enjoy some conversation, locate somewhere elegant in the central – yet surprisingly peaceful – area around the Opera House. Top hotels providing superb restaurants include the Rex (for historic ambiance), Continental (for French-style elegance), and Sheraton (for views). Otherwise, enjoy some sophisticated dining at Layla – Eatery & Bar (famous for cocktails), Xu Restaurant Lounge (contemporary Vietnamese), or Le Corto Wine Dining (French cuisine).

  • Best Areas in Ho Chi Minh City for Nightlife: Phạm Ngũ Lão and Around the Opera House

Situated as a compact network of streets, Strathbungo is well known for hosting micro-festivals that are highlighted by distinctive sandstone terraced houses designed by Victorian architect Alexander `Greek` Thomson. A visit during the Strathbungo Window Wanderland event transforms the streets into a huge outdoor gallery, with homes opened to host performances while Bungo in the Back Lanes converts the neighborhood into a large flea market complete with food stalls. Separating Strathbungo from Queen’s Park is Pollockshaws road, lined with independent restaurants such as Ranjit’s Kitchen serving Indian cuisine as well as The Glad Café, an excellent local music venue.

  • Prime Location in Ho Chi Minh City for Markets: Surrounding Bến Thành Marketa store filled with lots of different types of items

Built by French colonialists about 110 years ago, this massive indoor market is a notable location dominated by its iconic clock tower. It houses hundreds of stalls selling vegetables, meat, prepared food, clothes, spices, household appliances, and just about anything else. Visitors can watch heavy carts getting unloaded, inhale spices, enjoy a phở noodle dish, and observe locals negotiating with a smile. Traders aren’t too pushy, and prices are reasonable, so it’s the spot for souvenirs, such as conical nón lá hats, exquisite silk, and Ho Chi Minh T-shirts. Stalls sell authentic and low-cost Vietnamese food in the center of the market (menus are in English with photos).

  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Boutiques and Malls: Around the Opera House
While many locals frequent traditional markets for convenience and affordable prices, an increasing number of wealthy Vietnamese choose to browse the boutiques and shopping centers located downtown in HCMC. These air-conditioned shopping hubs provide respite from the rain and heat, although the roster of high-end stores available are quite similar across major Asian metropolitan areas. Towering above Notre Dame Cathedral is the gleaming Diamond Plaza, housing a selection of boutiques, eateries, a food court, and a cinema complex. Also popular are the arcades found at the Rex and Sheraton
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City to Organize Excursions: Phạm Ngũ Lãoa grocery store with a sign on the front of it

This area is undoubtedly the epicenter for budget-friendly travelers, and some visitors staying elsewhere go to Phạm Ngũ Lão to arrange organized outings. These range from lightning-quick tours around inner-city attractions to popular day trips to the remarkable Củ Chi Tunnels (part of an incredible 250km-long network built during the War), beautiful Mekong Delta (although my recommendation is for 2-3 days), and UNESCO-recognized Cần Giờ Mangrove Forest on an island in the Saigon River delta. Also worthwhile are cooking tours at Bến Thành Market and dinner cruises along the Saigon River. Purchase tours at the numerous travel bureaus around Phạm Ngũ Lão. Many bureaus are only one office with a desk and an employee working on commission for a company.

  • Best Location in Ho Chi Minh City for Outdoor Activities: Phạm Ngũ Lão
The best place in HCMC to organize an outdoor activity would be around Phạm Ngũ Lão where travel agencies are located, especially along the namesake road in the northern section. Those who enjoy nature may delight in hiking through Cần Giờ Mangrove Forest or cycling and canoeing around the Mekong Delta as part of multi-day excursions. Others could be stimulated by something more tranquil, like golf at the praised Long Thanh Golf Club (35kms away) or various beach diversions at Vung Tau. This famous weekend escape is accessible by hydrofoil (two hours one-way) opposite the cluster of high-rise lodgings along the Saigon River
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Walking: District 3
Exploring the city on foot is less uncomfortable than in Hanoi or other crowded Asian cities. Though along the river and around Phạm Ngũ Lão, traffic becomes noisy and uncontrolled. To survive, remember: (1) pedestrians have absolutely no rights – even on footpaths, and (2) almost no one will obey any traffic rules at any time – especially at traffic signals. The central area around the Opera House is astonishingly quiet, and walking provides real joy, but only on a few streets. Even better are the leafy streets of District 3, with tolerable traffic, wide sidewalks, and plenty to see, including the nearby Reunification Hall (Independence Palace) and two museums (see the best area for history). And there’s at least one café (and often four) on just about every corner.
  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for Cycling: District 3motorcycles parked in front of a building

Vehicular traffic moves swiftly in HCMC, making cycling inconvenient. Most locals use motorbikes or public buses for transportation. However, the municipal government has launched an electric bicycle system. Users can rent and later leave e-bikes at major destinations for tourists like the parks north of Phạm Ngũ Lão, near Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Zoo and Botanical Garden. Regrettably, instructions at all pickup/drop-off points are solely in Vietnamese, with barely any information provided online. If you have the gutsiness and linguistic skills, renting an e-bike to pedal around District 3 can be done, where streets are broad, traffic flows smoothly, and sights are well spread out.

  • Best Area in Ho Chi Minh City for the Airport: Thanh Binh
    .
  • Located approximately 8 kilometers from the central Opera House in Ho Chi Minh City, the Tan Son Nhat International Airport (with separate terminals for domestic and international flights) makes arriving and departing convenient. Therefore, staying at a hotel near the airport is unnecessary for late arrivals or early departures. However, there are several hotels situated near the airport, some positioned so close that plane noise could be disruptive. Positioned roughly halfway between the airport and downtown area is a part of Thanh Binh district, where various upscale hotels provide amenities like expansive gardens and large swimming pools that would be difficult to find in the densely developed city center

The 8 Best Areas in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for Tourists

1. Around the Opera House

a man riding a motorcycle down a street next to a church

Officially, District 1 spreads across most of the inner-city region for around 4km from the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens to beyond the Phạm Ngũ Lão backpacker area. Most attractions and services of interest for visitors can be found in this district.

a statue of a man sitting on top of a building

The quietest section home to notable buildings like the Opera House and People’s Committee Building (City Hall) has little traffic, a high-quality mall, and some of the finest restaurants and boutiques, making walking a real pleasure. There are some stylish five-star hotels and a few charming boutique hotels, but limited options in the moderate price range. The locale is excellent for a romantic holiday and visiting HCMC for the initial time.

2. Along Saigon River

a large body of water with tall buildings

The biggest high-rise hotel collection in the city is only a short walk east of the Opera House (see above). They take advantage of the location next to the Saigon River, but it appears polluted and unsightly. However, from a terminal (with cafés) opposite the hotels, boat trips, dinner cruises, and hydrofoils booking is possible for the amazing beach at Vung Tau (a two hour one-way trip). Additionally, there aren`t as many facilities in this area, and traffic on the riverside road is among the worst anywhere in Southeast Asia. There are mainly high-rise hotels with extensive views and a few boutique-style places, but it lacks anything more affordable.

3. City Center

The central business district of HCMC has tall buildings housing banks, government ministries, and hotels primarily along Lê Duẩn Street, in contrast to Hanoi and most other cities in Vietnam. This area stretches from the extensive gardens of the Reunification Hall (Independence Palace) to the Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and has a comparatively peaceful atmosphere suitable for walking around to landmarks like the Notre Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office.

a large building with a clock tower on top

The City Center is also close to sights around the Opera House area (see above) and within District 3 (see below). The City Center is not overly crowded with tourists or loud, which makes it even more appealing, but there are also fewer tourist amenities in the immediate area.

Most high-end accommodations are apartments designed for business people and diplomats, although available to tourists per night. With a large swimming pool, playground, spacious gardens, and apartments with kitchen facilities and up to three bedrooms, these apartment complexes are ideal for families)..

4. District 3

This part of the city next to District 1 towards the southeast has numerous administration buildings, foreign embassies, and worthwhile museums. Traffic flows smoothly along the broad, leafy streets, lined with upscale homes, premier boutiques, a few fast-food stops, and some western grocery stores catering to wealthy locals. District 3 is comparatively peaceful, spacious, and convenient for reaching all attractions and amenities across District 1. On almost every corner is at least one café selling Vietnamese coffee.

It provides the best areas for walking and cycling. Ideal for those exploring the city and countryside for the first time, most hotels are fresh and trendy. 5. Phạm Ngũ Lão

a market filled with lots of fruits and vegetables

Situated just south of District 3 and still within District 1, Phạm Ngũ Lão spreads across an area of roughly 700m by 300m. Though quite compact, it is crammed with an immense array of facilities beyond belief. While gradually becoming slightly more upscale in recent years, it continues to be incredibly well-liked and thus congested. Nearly all lodgings are inexpensive, family-run guesthouses, whereas the so-called “luxury hotels” specified below are only rated three stars. Noise from traffic and nightclubs is unavoidably an issue. Advance planning is important because highly-rated locations on booking.com are often completely booked. The advantages of staying here include the park on the far side of the northern roadway, with an air-conditioned marketplace. The disadvantage is the insane traffic flow. It is the spot to arrange organized tours, outdoor activities, and onwards transportation. Nightlife is happening and loud. It is not a place suited for families.

6. Around Phạm Ngũ Lão

a park filled with lots of different types of toys

Inevitably, additional hotels and other visitor facilities continue developing around the edges of the hugely popular Phạm Ngũ Lão area (see above). Remaining in this general vicinity – specifically north of the park – permits straightforward access to all the remarkable amenities within Phạm Ngũ Lão, yet with much less traffic, noise, people, and hassles. In the locations instantly north and south of Phạm Ngũ Lão, boutiques, coffee shops, minimarts, and travel bureaus are employed by locals as frequently as visitors. This area is not as overcrowded and overpriced as other parts of District 1, so it’s perfect for those on a budget and satisfactory enough for families)..

Rivaling Phạm Ngũ Lão for budget-conscious travelers are the backstreets surrounding this marvelous indoor marketplace (described earlier). 8. Thanh Binh

a city filled with lots of tall buildings

The lone region outside District 1 and District 3 deserving consideration is a part of Thanh Binh district. Roughly halfway among the airport and the Opera House downtown is a collection of immense hotels, primarily intended for airline team and visitors with latter arrival or early departure. However, the Opera House is only 8km from the airport, so transfers to lodgings in the city center are constantly brief and effortless.

Among the back lanes of Thanh Binh are a few sights, including Giác Lâm Pagoda (the city’s oldest structure) and the sprawling Ba Hoa Market, but most go undiscovered by visitors. Menus at local eateries are more likely to solely be in Vietnamese, but the locale is welcoming, safe, and spacious, and numerous upscale hotels cater exceedingly well to families.

The hotels listed below are unaffected by airplane noise, which is not the case for other hotels located closer to the airport).
