Monemvasia Tips & Recommendations
- Monemvasia is an enchanting and romantic Byzantine fortress town in southeastern Peloponnese dating back to the sixth century AD, and the longest continually occupied citadel in Europe. Driving to Monemvasia from Athens takes approximately 4 hours, with most of the route along well-maintained highways. There are multiple daily bus routes connecting Monemvasia to Athens or Sparti.
- A causeway connects the historic core (Kastro) of Monemvasia to the mainland and the modern town of Gefyra. It`s a 20-minute trek between Gefyra and Kastro. There are no vehicles permitted within Kastro, though cars can travel completely to the castle entrance to drop off passengers. Limited parking is available alongside the causeway and the road leading to the castle gate, and a sizable free parking area is situated to the right as one approaches the causeway. A shuttle bus runs between the start of the causeway and the Kastro gate entrance from 8am to 11pm every 30 minutes during summer (until mid-afternoon in winter) and costs €1.10. The fare for a taxi between Gefyra and Monemvasia Kastro is roughly €4.
