Highly rated for its historic charm and convenience in Cairns, The Abbott Boutique Hotel is considered the city’s premier boutique accommodation.

This charming 100-year-old hotel located along a downtown street has welcomed notable guests such as Queen Elizabeth II and former US President Jimmy Carter. It offers a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that is suitable for budget-conscious travelers not searching for a lavish resort. Standard rooms on one side have minimal views, but the spacious and colorful rooms facing the street are particularly appealing. Most significantly, The Abbott is very convenient to numerous amenities and points of interest in the area, including the markets, casino, and boats for excursions. Additionally, guests can access the pool and other facilities at the sister hotel Pacific Cairns, only a brief drive away. A continental breakfast is also included each morning and provided in the colonial-style guest lounge.

  • Location: 69-73 Abbott Street. Note: front desk hours are restricted to 10am to 6pm daily. At other times, contact the sister hotel, Pacific Cairns, 200m down Spence Street towards the water. The phone number referenced below redirects to the Pacific Cairns hotel after hours.

  • Nearby: Casino. Bus station for northern beaches. Boat dock for trips around the Great Barrier Reef.

The Abbott Boutique Hotel – The Basics

  • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: Not expected – or provided – at this sort of boutique hotel.
  • IMG Global, Trawick International, and Travelex offer similar coverage in some categories, but they also cost more. I recommend examining details about each company below so you can determine which one best suits your needs .

  • Accommodation Varieties: Superior Room • Deluxe Room • Listing of all spaces

The Abbott Boutique Hotel – Local Transport

  • Walking & Cycling: Cairns is so compact and wonderful for walking. Cycling is also well-liked along a path that extends about 3km alongside the water. Bikes can be rented at Cairns Electric Bikes, between the Hilton hotel and casino, 350m away.
  • Buses: Services run by Sunbus journey to beautiful tropical beaches under an hour away. The most convenient bus terminal resides on Lake Street (500m). Greyhound Australia provides bus transportation all over Queensland and the remainder of Australia from a stop (300m) near the Reef Fleet Terminal.
  • Trains: Operating between Cairns and Brisbane 5 times weekly, the Spirit of Queensland is one of Australia’s most scenic train routes. Equally awe-inspiring – and much shorter – are the daily trips on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. All trains utilize the terminal (1km) attached to the Cairns Central shopping center (see below).
  • Taxis & Ride-shares: Best to pre-book for Cairns Taxis.Uber also runs as far as Port Douglas.
  • Car Rental: Most internationally established agencies (and several locally-run ones) offer rentals, like Avis and Hertz.
  • Boats: All types of boats for sightseeing, diving, fishing, and sailing depart from the Reef Fleet Terminal, just 350 meters away. Bookings can be made online, through any travel agency in the downtown area, or at the official booking office opposite the terminal.

The Abbott Boutique Hotel – What’s Nearby?

Almost every restaurant and café in Cairns is permitted to serve alcohol.

Best Nearby Restaurants

  • Miss Chief Bar & Eatery – Great location on the second floor of an old building with a spacious balcony. Contemporary cuisine and an `ingenious cocktail selection`. One block behind the hotel.
  • Perrotta’s – located next to the (free) Cairns Art Gallery for relaxed outdoor eating. Especially well-known for breakfast items and coffee. Just down Abbott Street (200m).
  • Ochre Restaurant – heavenly waterside setting 200m from the hotel. Award-winning Australian cuisine with an ever-modifying menu and focus on sustainability.
  • Dundee’s Restaurant on the Waterfront – adjoining Ochre. Tables beside the water and premium assistance for seafood, steaks, pastas, and salads. Another establishment attached to the Cairns Aquarium (see below) has a wall beside a tank of marine life.
  • . Waiters remove as much meat as wanted. In the nearby Pacific Cairns hotel, 200m closer to the water.

Best Nearby Bars

  • A expansive and inviting setting located along a walkable lane, P.J. O’Brien’s offers hearty meals and nightly live music and activities. It lies one block behind the hotel in a shaded area.
  • Rattle ‘N Hum Cairns – Popular among both visitors and locals for its seaside setting, garden seating area, and daily special menus (especially pizzas). About 400 meters away.

Nearby Shops

  • Less than one hundred meters along Abbott Street is the main Woolworths supermarket; even closer is the small Orchid Plaza Shopping Centre. Approximately three hundred meters along Abbott Street are the Cairns Night Markets. Open daily, with souvenir stalls available from 5pm and cafés accessible from 10am, they tend to attract many tourists. More vibrant is the Asian-style Rusty’s Markets (open early on Fridays through Sundays), located two blocks behind the hotel. Mostly selling fresh produce but also souvenirs, live music, and a food court. The massive Cairns Central shopping center is four blocks back from the hotel.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

  • Day excursions by boat – Travel is available from the Reef Fleet Terminal (350m), offering many organized options – whether diving/snorkeling, fishing, sailing, water-sports, or whale-watching among some of the most spectacular coral reefs globally. Others simply swim, snorkel, hike, or dine at Fitzroy Island or Green Island – both just 45 minutes each way by boat.
  • Gambling establishment – smaller than some, but no less busy and vibrant. All sorts of betting available, as well as live performances and inexpensive bars and eateries for all. Simple to identify, 300m away.
  • Lagoon – in place of beaches inside the city, this massive open-air swimming pool is 400 meters away, alongside the Esplanade. Surrounded by shady lawns with free barbecue facilities available. Open from about 6am to 9pm daily. Free entry.
  • The Cairns Aquarium – the city’s newest attraction (open daily) houses 15,000 sea creatures, including large sawfish, hammerhead sharks, and turtles as well as crocodiles, frogs, and snakes unique to the region. It is located 700 meters further down Abbott Street.
  • Beaches – some will be disappointed that the coastline within Cairns contains swamps and mud. Thankfully, perfect tropical beaches – Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, and Palm Cove – all with various places to eat, drink, shop, and stay can be found within an hour north by local bus. Note the warning signs about stingers (jellyfish) and even crocodiles.
