This notable art gallery is helpfully situated on the main walking path in Fira and steps from the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral. Visual artist Yorgos Kypris opened the exhibition space in Santorini in 1990 and has kept the same location for over three decades. These days, he divides his time between Santorini and his workshop in Athens, while his son Alex Kypris, himself a contemporary artist, oversees the gallery.

Kypris` most famous and ongoing body of work is his `fish series` commenced in 1993. It constitutes his largest and most commercially available collection exhibited at his art gallery. Through this collection he portrays humanity`s dominance over other lifeforms as cruel by highlighting our supremacy. He depicts fish as victims of the preservation needs of human beings. In doing so, he aims to bring attention to issues surrounding humanity`s ecological impact on Earth. As he states, “All the scuba dives I did for fishing gradually transformed into observation dives of the marine world. Witnessing the movement and graceful dance-like patterns of schools of fish was a revelation I could not remain indifferent to. For me, this display was true art!”

Part of the fish series showcased at the lobby of the World Bank building in Washington, D.C., commissioned in 1997. Other collections within the fish series include: frozen fish, emigration, circular motion, sharks, fish balls, eels, hybrids, diving fish, and wall installations of acqua and vortex.

Yorgos Kypris possesses an extensive portfolio dating back to the 70s. A significant part of that portfolio is his commissioned works around the globe, which includes pieces in Santorini. Near Fabrica Shopping Center just around the corner from the gallery, an installation of 4 bronze figures on poles entitled the “Observers” sits perched 4.5m in the air. This work of Yorgos was commissioned by the commercial center in 2002.
