1. Grace Santorini – Imerovigli

I genuinely enjoy this hotel. The huge swimming pool, superb restaurant, and idyllic outlooks make it challenging to outdo. I can still recollect my first visit to the hotel nearly ten years ago just after I began this site. Rooms, suites, and the villa are roomy, ranging from fifty to four hundred square meters – most with outside, heated plunge pools – all with terraces, twice-daily maid help, turndown service, and tailored comforts (room scent, pillow menu, food preferences) organized ahead of your stay. The hotel has unbelievable panoramic sunset perspectives over the caldera, centered on Skaros Rock and stretching from Oia in the north to Akrotiri in the south.

2. Katikies Hotel – Oia

Route US-1 in Maine takes in some of New England`s most scenic parts of the Atlantic coastline, a rugged series of headlands and historic fishing ports starting with Kittery on the Piscataqua River (and New Hampshire border). There is much to explore away from the highway – you could easily spend a couple weeks experiencing it all. Driving north, some of our favorite stops include Ogunquit Beach, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, and Kennebunkport, prior to passing through the city of Portland. From here the highway runs northeast through many historic towns and the shopping outlet hotspot of Freeport before shadowing the coast of Penobscot Bay from Rockland to Acadia National Park.

Where should I stay in Santorini?

Deciding where to stay is the first and possibly most difficult decision visitors to Santorini need to make. It’s not an easy choice.

Map of Santorini Towns

a collage of images showing different types of electronic devices

1) Caldera vs Beach

This is the first decision to be made.

Do you want to stay in the towns along the cliff with the stunning views looking down into the caldera?

a boat sitting on top of a body of water

Or do you want to lodge at one of the beach towns on the opposite side of the island? It remains a scenic setting but lacks views of the caldera and volcano.

a beach filled with lots of chairs and umbrellas

Santorini has a distinctive wedge shape like a doorstop. A cliff on one side (the caldera’s edge) slopes down to the beaches on the other side. It takes approximately 10 or 15 minutes to drive from one side of the island to the other.

If lodging at one of Santorini`s beach sites, the selection is rather uncomplicated and unimportant. The two primary towns are Kamari and Perissa (with Perivolos being an extension of Perissa). Kamari has more development with additional shops, bars, hotels, and dining establishments making it a livelier location. Perissa boasts a marginally better beach with a few upscale hotels and beach clubs emerging at the southern section of Perivolos. I would advise Kamari for its restaurant and bar scenes (never overly crowded). Kamari also has a shorter trip into Fira. A boat services the route between Kamari and Perissa allowing easy enjoyment of both areas in a single day.

2) What Town on the Caldera?

Most people opt to stay along the Caldera. It’s a wise choice and what I advocate. It’s what makes Santorini unique. But now you have to decide which town – and it’s not an easy decision.

The caldera contains four main towns: Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia.

Fira – Most dining, nightlife, shopping options. Stunning panoramas.
Firostefani – Quiet. An easy walk to Fira. Great views.
Imerovigli – Very tranquil. A bus, taxicab ride, or 25 min stroll from Fira. The best panoramas on the island. A half-dozen wonderful eateries •  Oia – Many eateries, some high-end shopping outlets, but little nightlife. Romantic. Great views.

Fira Hotels

a city filled with lots of tall buildings

The largest town on the island and the center of the restaurant, shopping, and nightlife scene. The panoramic view of the caldera from Fira is spectacular however sunset views will often be obstructed by the presence of Thirassia – a small island to Santorini’s west. Fira is also the bus hub, so every other town is just one bus trip away. Alternatively, a trip between two other towns will often involve a change of buses in Fira (e.g. Oia to Kamari requires a bus from Oia to Fira, and then Fira to Kamari – not a major deal but it can get tiring after several days of busing around the island). If you’re in Santorini to party and hit the clubs then you’ll be spending plenty of time in Fira. Of course, the booming nightlife can be loud if your hotel is inland near the town center. Noise levels are strictly limited along the caldera so if your hotel is located there you probably won’t have a loud-music problem.

The Best Fira Hotels

Oia Hotels

a large blue and white boat sitting on top of a beach

Oia, located on Santorini, is considered one of the most romantic and enchantingly beautiful towns. Its lanes and alleys are crossed all throughout, revealing breathtaking views around every corner. Each night, people gather – sitting on walls, steps and rooftops – to watch the spectacular sunset. While Imerovigli may boast slightly superior panoramas, the true magic of Oia stems from the town itself, its residents, its wine, and the idyllic setting. It can become busy but never feels overwhelmingly crowded. Some of the best places to dine are found in Oia and only Fira has more shops and eateries. Late into the evening, there are many spots to grab a beverage but for dancing and partying one will want to take a bus or taxi to Fira. The walk from Oia to Fira (and vice versa) takes approximately two hours and stands as one of the highlights for visitors to Santorini.

The Best Oia Hotels

Imerovigli Hotels

a large building with a lighthouse on top of it

Imerovigli offers perhaps the finest views of any town on Santorini. Situated at a higher elevation than other places along the caldera rim, it affords impressive sunsets and perspectives of the volcanic crater. Whereas sun sinking glimpses from Fira sometimes encounter hindrances from neighboring islands, most hotels in Imerovigli grant clear sight of the falling sun. It is the calmest of the four towns with no nightlife. Though modest in size, it holds some of Santorini`s best eateries and a scattering of shops and markets. Firostefani lies a 15-minute walk distant along the cliffside trail and Fira another 10 minutes more where dining and shopping choices multiply exponentially. Buses run every 30 to 45 minutes both south to Fira and north to Oia.

The Best Imerovigli Hotels

Firostefani Hotels

a statue of a man sitting on top of a boat

An extension of Fira and an easy 15-minute stroll along the caldera trail from all the shops and restaurants of Fira. It’s difficult to determine where Fira ends and Firostefani begins – it all seems like one town as you wander between them. The vistas here are just as magnificent as Fira. Many individuals go into Fira for evening meal and then walk back later in the night but there are numerous good eateries in Firostefani. There is no nightlife – for clubs and bars you’ll undoubtedly be heading to Fira – but the lack of partying makes for a more tranquil town.

The Best Firostefani Hotels

Kamari Hotels

a child sitting on a beach next to a body of water

Kamari has a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere, a pedestrian beach-front promenade, and plenty of eateries. It’s a 15-minute bus ride to Fira making day trips to the caldera towns simple to execute. The swimming in the pebbly cove is refreshing and a pleasure. I still recommend visitors stay around the caldera (because that’s what makes Santorini so exceptional and spectacular) but spending a few days or a week in this easygoing town is no problem.

The Best Kamari Hotels

Perissa and Perivolos Hotels

a person riding a surfboard on top of a beach

Perissa Beach has sand that is more pleasant than Kamari Beach, but it is farther away from Fira than Kamari, which makes visiting the caldera area a bit more of an outing. Some luxury hotels and beach clubs have appeared in Perissa, especially at the southern end known as Perivolos Beach, though there are still many great low-key restaurants and bars. Perivolos and Perissa beaches offer a good combination of luxury and affordable hotels. At the end of Perivolos Beach is Agios Georgios Beach, which has a small number of fine dining restaurants and luxury beach clubs.

The Best Perissa and Perivolos Hotels

Megalochori Hotels

a clock tower in the middle of a city

Once the largest village on the island, traditional Megalochori is known for its vineyards, great cuisine, and superb views over the caldera from its western edge. Though the village center sits back from the cliff and doesn’t have views. Megalochori has a charming town square that’s encircled by churches, pottery stores, wonderful family-owned tavernas, as well as some of the island’s finest wineries. Hotels here are generally located along the cliff with lovely views out over the caldera, though there are a handful of small hotels in the heart of the village, including Vedema, the first five-star property to open in Santorini. About 10 minutes south of Fira by vehicle.

The Best Megalochori Hotels

Pyrgos Hotels

a horse that is standing in front of a gate

Charming hilltop village situated at the highest point on the island; cultural attractions, panoramic island views. The winding paths, modest shops and eateries, and traditional community feel of Pyrgos make this an ideal spot for those seeking to experience authentic Santorini away from crowds of cruise passengers. Pyrgos is also the island’s most magical spot over Easter weekend – on Good Friday, the entire village is lined with candles, and there is a march from the church of Agios Nikolaos Theotokaki.

The Best Pyrgos Hotels

Akrotiri Hotels

a building with a clock tower on top of it

A distant and hushed village on the island’s southernmost tip. Not a wealth of shops, however there are some superb fish taverns and small beaches along the water, gorgeous caldera perspectives, a nearby lighthouse, and a world-renowned archaeological dig site. Akrotiri village is on the island’s main bus route, but it is simpler to investigate the island from here by vehicle – it is a 20-minute drive into Fira.

The Best Akrotiri Hotels

Mesaria Hotels

a white building with a large window next to a tree

Centrally-located Mesaria sits a short distance south of Fira, surrounded by vineyards and on the way to the ferry port. The core of the village is about 500 meters inland with various cave houses, domed places of worship, and neoclassical structures, such as the landmark Argyros Mansion (depicted above), once home to a winemaking and merchant family in the late 1800s, presently operating as a museum. The westernmost end of the village sits directly facing the volcanoes on the caldera. Lodging and dining usually costs less here than in the northern caldera towns, although there are still several high-end properties and fine dining restaurants on the caldera and in the village center. It’s wise to rent a vehicle if staying on the caldera side of Mesaria, which offers restricted bus service. Frequent bus service is available to Fira and regular service to the beaches on the main road passing through the inland village.

The Best Mesaria Hotels

Emporio Hotels

a tall tower with a clock on top of it

Historically serving as the business center of the island, this medieval stronghold is now the most populated village, though rarely visited by tourists. Located inland on the south side, away from the caldera and beaches where taverns and coffee shops cater to locals and seasonal workers, travelers are rewarded here with a more authentic experience than in other villages. Anchored at the base of Profitis Ilias Mountain and built around a 15th century Venetian castle within a fortified wall of cave-like homes and a tangled network of paths between old churches and cafes. The closest beach, Perivolos, is just under 3 km away while Fira is about 10 km away, requiring a car for stays in Emporio.

The Best Emporio Hotels

Finikia Hotels

a man standing on top of a hill next to a building

Historically known for its vineyards and as home to many farm workers on the island, the compact village of Finikia maintains a pastoral charm. Visitors here will find cobblestone footpaths within its pedestrian-only center area, along with cave dwellings, gardens growing local plants, and a few excellent restaurants. The primary attraction, though, is its proximity to Oia. Finikia`s village core is approximately one km (around a 15-minute walk) from the starting point of Oia`s marble walking path, making it easy to enjoy Oia`s dining, shopping, and famous sunsets, then later relax in the tranquility of this traditional village for a peaceful night`s sleep.

The Best Finikia Hotels

Thirassia Island Hotels

a building with a clock on the front of it

Although lying just one nautical mile from Oia, the islands feel quite distinct. Nearly untouched by tourism, Thirassia today appears much like Santorini did decades past – mostly untamed with few paved routes, simply worn trails connecting a handful of sleepy hamlets, family-run eateries, and volcanic beaches. The most prominently standing structure, the Church of the Virgin Mary, sits above an abandoned cave settlement accessible solely by hiking in from the capital, Manolas. Passenger-only ferries (no vehicles) run between Oia and Thirassia’s two ports, Korfos and Riva (where the beaches lie) three times per day, usually at 8:00, 12:45, and 15:20. The larger ferry allowing cars operates from Athinios port to Riva once weekly, commonly on Tuesdays. Ferry schedules may change, so confirm with your lodging for the latest information.

Santorini Hotels with Private Jacuzzi or Plunge Pool

a pool in the middle of a swimming pool

Several hotels on Santorini feature private pools in various formats – swimming pools, shallow plunge pools, jacuzzis, hot tubs, two-person baths. More details available at this link: hotels on Santorini with private pools.

Larger pools (whether private or for an entire hotel) are usually not heated so while some may question the usefulness of having a hot tub on a semi-tropical island they get plenty of usage by visitors. During July and August, nights will usually remain warm, but in May, June, September, and October temperatures can cool down after sunset and a small heated pool can be a welcome addition to a suite.

FAQ on Hotels and Santorini

What is the best hotel in the Santorini beach towns?

a row of beach chairs with umbrellas on the beach The Istoria Hotel on Perivolos Beach is considered the finest beachfront accommodation in Santorini. Most hotels located in the coastal towns lack the true luxury status afforded to those positioned along the caldera yet Istoria stands as an exception. It offers spacious suites including private pools, a stunning central pool, an Asian-inspired spa, a gourmet eatery, and a beach club. A close runner up is the five-star Sea Breeze on Exomitis Beach boasting two adult pools, two children’s pools, a fine dining restaurant, and a (nearly) private attended beach. All rooms and suites at Sea Breeze feature private hot tubs or pools. Another marvelous beachfront accommodation is Nikki Beach Resort & Spa on Monolithos Beach, north of Kamari. This is another boutique, luxury resort but with more of a youthful, festive atmosphere. In the coastal town of Kamari approximately 200 meters from the shoreline, Radisson Blu Zaffron Resort is a lavish, adults-only resort with a large pool, excellent for larger groups

Can you recommend some hotels to stay that aren’t quite so expensive?

On Santorini you receive what you pay for. That said, if you’re amenable to compromising a little on the vista, the amenities, or on having a pool there are several places that offer very good value.

The following presents some reasonably priced hotel options without the high costs of five-star accommodations.

In Fira there is the Keti Hotel and Kamares Apartments. Each provides stunning views.

In Firostefani the Damigos Caldera World and Villa Ilias are simple hotels overlooking the caldera. Not all rooms have views but many do at very reasonable rates.

‹p› To reach Heathrow Airport, one can travel to Paddington Station from Aldgate or Liverpool Street on the Hammersmith and City or Circle Lines. If planning a brief excursion to Paris or Amsterdam during your stay, King’s Cross/St Pancras train station can also be accessed via the same underground lines.‹/p›

If you`re in Santorini for excellent views and don`t care much about the location of your hotel, there are a collection of hotels approximately a 20-minute walk south of Fira that occupy an amazing position on the caldera`s cliff. They have very affordable rates in comparison to the hotels in the main towns. Take a look at Volcano View, and Lilium Santorini Villa.

What’s better? A sunset view hotel or a caldera view hotel?

I’d opt for a caldera outlook. It’s available all day. The sunset is only there for a few minutes. And it’s also fun to join the crowds and drink a bottle of wine on the steps of Oia as the sun sets – so it’s not as if you’re foregoing the sunset by choosing a hotel with a caldera view.

What hotel has the best views on Santorini?

Imerovigli village has the highest elevation of all locations around the caldera rim and consequently offers some of the finest perspectives of the caldera and sunsets.

If there was only one hotel I could select for the title of Best Caldera View, it would be Astra Suites. Simply astonishing views in three different directions (north to Oia, west towards Thirassia, and south towards Fira and Akrotiri). A very close second would be Grace Hotel with comparable views, though some rooms down the side of the caldera are a bit too near to Skaros for a perfect view.

Nearby hotels that look more towards Oia are Kasimatis Studios,Galaxy Suites,Avaton Resort & Spa. These three establishments likely occupy some of the highest elevations on Santorini. The perspectives from them over the caldera are spectacular. They provide great views of sunsets with Oia visible off to the right.

Near Astra is Tholos Resort. This lodging is at the tip of Imerovigli and has an almost direct perspective of Skaros Rock. It’s the iconic scenery of the Santorini caldera. However it is at a marginally lower elevation than Grace, Kasimatis, Galaxy, and Avaton.

Midway involving Imerovigli additionally moreover Oia has Aenaon Villas. That place a little estranged than a handful (appropriate for those looking for solitude) still however the ideas here are unquestionable with both Imerovigli (to the left) additionally moreover Oia (to the right) inside view.

In the opposite direction (towards Fira) but still in Imerovigli are Chromata and Altana Traditional Houses and Suites. Both locations offer magnificent views, though at certain times of year the sunset may be partially obscured.

In Fira, I’d recommend the Keti Hotel offers the most scenic panoramas. In Firostefani, the lodgings with the finest views are Belvedere Suites,Tsitouras Collection, and Homeric Poems.

Oia has numerous hotels with similar perspectives, but highlights comprise Ikies,Canaves Oia Suites,Katikies (these hotels appear in the caldera however don’t have flawless sunset perspectives) and Esperas Traditional Houses (which looks towards the sunset and Ammoudi Bay however not into the caldera).

What’s the best hotel in Santorini not on the caldera?

a dog standing in front of a swimming poolCarpe Diem” is situated in the traditional hamlet of Pyrgos, 10 minutes from Fira. This is a great location to avoid the crowds, plus as the highest point on the island, Pyrgos provides stunning panoramic perspectives over all of Santorini. This incredible hotel focuses on customized experiences, tailoring its offerings to each guest’s individual needs. The cuisine on site is top quality and there are a couple of great local restaurants (and a winery) nearby. A car is advised here

What are the best Santorini hotels for privacy, quiet, and solitude?

a large swimming pool in front of a large building

Four resorts stand out as providing a quiet and relaxing setting far from the crowds of Fira and Oia. All of these would be excellent for a honeymoon, romantic getaway, or simply privacy and relaxation. (Aenaon Villas is pictured above.)

When should I book my hotel?

As soon as possible. The finest luxury hotels start filling up six to 12 months in advance. Wedding reservations are often made one to three years ahead. Accommodations on the island can usually always be found but booking a room within two to three months of a summer visit means the very best hotels will likely be at full capacity.

What is a cave hotel and where are they found?

The underground accommodations are much like what their name implies. Chambers that are fashioned into the cliffs or mounds. They ordinarily have curved ceilings and irregular structures. They can be individual suites or have several rooms. They regularly have a patio external to the subterranean portion of the living space. The cave residences remain remarkably cool during the heat of summertime. They tend to be located in the towns of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. The majority of the high-end hotels stated above have cave suites.

What town has the best restaurants on Santorini?

Fira has the most options – and the best selection of reasonably priced food (just walk away from caldera and into the center of town). Oia, nearby Amoudi Bay, and Imerovigli have a higher concentration of top-tier eateries. If I could only dine in one town for the whole trip it would be Imerovigli. These are my favored restaurants in Santorini.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

September is my preferred month, but any time between May and late October is great. If you’re not in Santorini to sunbathe and don`t mind a bit of overcast skies then March, April, and November can be excellent times to visit. The beach towns get very quiet outside of June to September. The caldera towns have a longer tourist season but even their shops, restaurants, and hotels start to close in early November. Most high-end hotels are open from March 1 to November 15. Recently more hotels and restaurants are staying open year-round as off-season travel to Santorini has increased. The slowest months are December, January, and February when Fira is the only town with any activity.

Is there a must-do thing we have to experience on Santorini?

My primary suggestion is to walk the coastal path along the rim of the caldera from Fira to Oia. It takes two to four hours and has absolutely unbelievable scenery of the volcano.
