Nafplio Basics

  • Nafplio (also written as Nafplion) is a charming, romantic, and compact harbor town, easily explored on foot. Most of Old Town Nafplio is pedestrian-only, and parking can be scarce on the outskirts. A car isn’t necessary while staying in town. If you have a car, the largest and most accessible parking area is adjacent to the marina, at the roundabout.
  • Nafplio lacks a train station, but travelers can conveniently access it from Athens by bus. Daily bus services connect Nafplio to Athens’ central KTEL bus terminal (Kifissos), located approximately 15 minutes west of the city center by taxi. Tickets can be purchased online around 10 days before your journey — recommended during peak season — or at the bus station. In summer, arrive early at the bus station; a ticket alone does not guarantee a seat on a full bus. The journey takes just over 2 hours.
  • Generally, hotels in the north close to the marina are situated on even, level ground; accommodations in the south of Staikopoulou Street are set on a steep hillside with numerous steps, in the shadow of Acronafplia Castle.
  • Highly Recommended Eateries in Nafplio: Alaloum (traditional taverna, two locations) • 3Sixty (upscale gourmet) • Pidalio Mezedopoleio (specializing in meze and super-fresh seafood) • Mitato (best souvlaki) • Koustenis (best ice cream)

Staying in Nafplio

Nafplio, one of mainland Greece’s most charming and romantic towns, is located in the Argolid Peninsula of the eastern Peloponnese and is easily accessible from Athens, making it an ideal base for exploring nearby archaeological sites like Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Tyrins. As Greece’s first modern capital before Athens, Nafplio now boasts a variety of attractions, including several museums, three medieval castles, numerous excellent restaurants and boutique shops, and a picturesque harbor lined with palm trees.

Nafplio`s historic Old Town, restricted to pedestrians, is easily navigable on foot and a charming place to lodge. A general rule regarding hotels – those in the north near the marina are on flat, even ground, while accommodations in the south section fall under the shadow of Acronafplia Castle, set on a steep hillside requiring stair navigation – more removed but offering fantasic vistas.
