The Best Areas to Stay in Seattle

For most visitors, the ideal area to reside is downtown Seattle – specifically the locality immediately surrounding Pike Place Market. Downtown is where the majority of Seattle’s finest hotels, top dining establishments, attractions, and shopping can be found – all within a dense, compact, and walkable vicinity. Puget Sound views are incredible from here, and local transportation lines (light rail, bus, streetcar, and monorail) converge downtown, making it simple to roam greater Seattle without a rental vehicle.

For food enthusiasts, staying near Pike Place Market is a convenient delight with several of Seattle’s best food tours setting out nearby. I enjoy visiting the market early in the morning, grabbing a coffee or baked good, and walking around the stalls before the tourists arrive.

Northwest of downtown sits the trendy neighbourhood of Belltown filled with restaurants, bars, music venues, and nightlife typical of an urban core but with fewer corporate towers and chains and more cafes and clubs. North of there, within easy walking distance or a quick monorail ride from downtown, sprawls the massive entertainment precinct known as Seattle Center – home to landmarks like the Space Needle and Climate Pledge Arena alongside multiple museums (Pacific Science Center, Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle Children’s Museum, Chihuly Garden and Glass), performing arts venues (Seattle Children’s Theatre, McCaw Hall, Seattle Repertory Theatre, the Vera Project), and a superb playground and sizable outdoor fountain. Seattle Center additionally hosts the city`s two premier festivals, on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends (Folklife and Bumbershoot respectively).

Hotels near Climate Pledge Arena:
The Maxwell Hotel,MarQueen,Mediterranean Inn,Hyatt House,Hyatt Place,Hampton Inn & Suites, and Homewood Suites by Hilton are several options located in downtown Seattle.

Directly south of downtown Seattle lies the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood – the area that was originally downtown – now home to art galleries, leafy pedestrian plazas, several notable restaurants, and the rightfully popular Underground Tour. Visitors headed to games or shows at Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park often choose to lodge in Pioneer Square or the neighboring International District, given the stadiums` immediate proximity. And from Pioneer Square, traveling on foot to downtown attractions or the arenas is simple. The neighborhood is also a convenient base for day trips from the city, since Seattle`s King Street Amtrak station and ferries to nearby destinations are within a brief walk.

Situated westward and at a lower altitude from Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square lies Seattle’s Waterfront – anchored at its southern end by a busy harbor and extending northward to a gravelly shoreline. Given its separation by a steep hillside, this strip along the water feels somewhat segregated from the rest of the city, yet it is home to many of Seattle’s premier activities – including the Seattle Aquarium, Great Wheel, Washington State ferries, and popular Seattle boat excursions – all providing beautiful vistas of Elliott Bay, the Puget Sound islands, and the Olympic Mountains.

There are also some wonderful short trips and destinations near Seattle – from scenic Snoqualmie Falls to the San Juan Islands across the border in Victoria and Vancouver.

The Best Places to Stay in Seattle

Best Neighborhoods in Seattle for …

  • The finest neighborhood in Seattle for sightseeing attractions: Pike Place Market
    .
  • Situated in the heart of Seattle sightseeing, Pike Place Market is central to excellent local shops and terrific restaurants, with the majority of hotels around Pike Place Market offering beautiful perspectives of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Beyond exploring the Market itself (a must for visitors), lodgings in this area are within easy walking distance of the historic district in Pioneer Square, the Seattle Art Museum, the nightlife of Belltown, Waterfront attractions and ferries, the monorail providing access to Seattle Center and the Space Needle, as well as Downtown boutiques and performances. When it comes to touring top attractions, hotels closer to Pike Place Market provide more convenient locations.

  • The most popular neighborhood in Seattle for nightlife activities is Belltown.
  • Live music venues, award-winning eateries serving prohibition-era style cocktails, and jazz clubs – you`ll find all of these and more in Belltown, an energetic neighborhood situated just north of iconic Pike Place Market. This area attracts Seattle`s youthful population seeking trendy boutiques, bars, and dining – with activity levels increasing on weekend evenings, especially after last call at 2am. Belltown offers ideal proximity to several of Seattle`s top attractions; a walkable location near Pike Place Market, Seattle Center home to the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, outdoor music festivals, and MoPOP, downtown shopping districts, and the waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park.

  • Best Neighborhood in Seattle for Cuisine and Eateries: Pike Place Market and Ballard
The Pike Place Market area has many great dining options – from inexpensive but delicious food stalls to ethnic eateries to high-end cuisine. Some top choices include Matt`s in the Market (classic NW cuisine), Sushi Kashiba, Place Pigalle (French, romantic), Country Dough (hole-in-the-wall Chinese noodles and flatbread), Pasta Casalinga (housemade pasta, busy and casual), Pike Place Chowder (enormously popular for good reason), Il Bistro (great pizza, open late) and Aerlume (fine dining, beautiful views). Outside Seattle`s main tourist area, Ballard is the best neighborhood for food and restaurants. Many of Seattle`s top chefs have been drawn to this hip but sleepy location northwest of downtown with many top-rated restaurants. Some of the best places to eat in Ballard are The Walrus and the Carpenter (oysters), Un Bien (Caribbean-style sandwiches), La Carta de Oaxaca (Mexican), Delancey (pizza), and Copine (modern, upscale French).

Is staying in Belltown or downtown Seattle preferable?

The Belltown and Downtown districts are close to each other however the boundary that separates them is ambiguous and debated. The following hotels are found just north or south of the contested border between Belltown and Downtown and all make an excellent choice for visitors wanting to be near the dining and nightlife options in Belltown and the shopping and busy urban atmosphere of Downtown:

Inn at the MarketThompsonThe StatePalihotelCharterHotel AndraWestinMayflower Park

  • Best Seattle area for new visitors: Pike Place Market
Famed Northwest dining and shopping venues, beautiful Puget Sound and mountain scenery, as well as proximity to other iconic activities make the area encircling Pike Place Market ideal for those new to Seattle. Beyond the Market itself (the city’s #1 must-see tourist attraction), accommodations near Pike Place Market are conveniently situated near top Seattle experiences like harbor tours on Elliott Bay, historic tours of pioneering Pioneer Square, the scenic Aquarium and Great Wheel, ferry boats to Bainbridge Island, and the monorail to Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle, Museum of Pop Culture, and the Chihuly museum)
  • Most Romantic Neighborhood in Seattle: Waterfront, Pike Place Market
This one highlights the views. The majestic Olympic Mountains in the distance and ferry boats slipping silently across the bay – whether from a balmy summer evening balcony or cosying-up by a fire on a chilly, drizzly day, there’s no better scenic backdrop in Seattle than a Puget Sound panorama. The best views can be found in the Waterfront neighborhood and in the area around Pike Place Market; the Market area has better access to shops and restaurants, while the Waterfront’s relative seclusion makes it a better choice for a more private getaway.

  • Finest Neighborhood in Seattle for Families: Seattle Center
    .
  • Anchored by the iconic Space Needle, Seattle Center is a notable arts and amusement location situated just to the north of Belltown. Constructed for the 1962 Seattle World`s Fair, the Center`s campus houses several family-friendly attractions such as the Pacific Science Center, The Museum of Pop Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass, an amazing playground, and the Seattle Children`s Museum and Theatre. The Seattle Monorail provides convenient access to downtown and Pike Place Market. The neighborhood generally quiets at night, but check your dates – if you`re traveling during a festival weekend (especially Memorial Day or Labor Day) or when there`s a major concert at Key Arena, expect busier streets and difficult parking.

  • Neighborhood in Seattle with Strong Local Vibe: Ballard
With a lively nightlife scene but retaining a cozy seaside town feel, Ballard is located roughly 6 miles northwest of downtown. Home to a picturesque beach and marina, Nordic Heritage Museum, Ballard Locks, excellent weekly farmers` market, and craft breweries, this family-friendly neighborhood provides no shortage of activities. Ballard serves as an ideal base for those interested in local pubs, hip cafes, trendy and delicious restaurants, top-notch live music – and an almost total lack of tourists.
  • Best Area in Seattle without Owning a Vehicle: Pike Place Market
Accommodations near Pike Place Market are within a 10-minute walk of the Seattle waterfront, excellent shopping and performances in central downtown, and the bars and restaurants of Belltown. Traversing on foot from Pike Place Market to the Pioneer Square historic district takes approximately 15 minutes, and getting from Pike Place to the Space Needle takes about 20 minutes (though you can always hop on the Monorail downtown and arrive there in 5 minutes).
  • Safest Areas of Seattle: South Lake Union, Ballard
  • Generally, the farther one travels from downtown Seattle`s core, the calmer and safer the ambiance tends to feel. (While no Seattle neighborhood could be considered truly unsafe, some have a higher population of those experiencing homelessness or asking for assistance than others.) South Lake Union offers a lovely, quieter community still connected to the downtown area by streetcar, allowing sightseeing convenience. If proximity to downtown is not essential, Ballard presents a great choice for a local, neighborly vibe in a safe environment.

  • Less safe parts of Seattle that should be avoided include Pioneer Square and the University District areas.
  • Seattle sees relatively little dangerous criminal activity in any neighborhood. However, the city does have a higher than average unhoused population and panhandling can be bothersome – especially in areas where social services are located, like Pioneer Square and the University District.

The 10 Best Neighborhoods in Seattle for Tourists

a tall brick building with a clock on the side

1. Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market is one of Seattle’s most frequented and cherished attractions (by visitors and locals alike), and the dense surrounding neighborhood is the epicenter of sightseeing in Seattle. While it certainly attracts tourists, its streets and alleyways still retain a gritty yet appealing local atmosphere that endures in spite of the crowds. Small galleries and shops are everywhere, as well as many restaurants ranging from small Market stalls to dining that stretches the budget with gourmet cuisine. Although technically part of downtown Seattle, Pike Place Market feels like a separate neighborhood with a different vibe than the surrounding urban core. Accommodations near Pike Place Market offer spectacular views of the waterfront, Elliott Bay, and Olympic Mountains – and generally substantial price tags. Attractions that are walkable from Pike Place Market include historic Pioneer Square and the Underground Tour, the Seattle Waterfront (Great Wheel, Aquarium, and Wings over Washington virtual flying experience), downtown theaters and shopping, the Seattle Art Museum, Washington State ferry terminal, Argosy harbor cruises, Chihuly Museum, Pacific Science Center, and Museum of Popular Culture.

2. Downtown

Downtown Seattle is a readily navigable grid of shopping, restaurants, theaters, and office buildings that sits roughly alongside Interstate 5 and Pike Place Market. Home to the flagship Nordstrom store and the high-end shops of Pacific Place Mall, downtown also provides cultural attractions like Benaroya Hall (where the Seattle Symphony performs) and the 5th Avenue and Paramount Theaters, both hosting a rotating calendar of big-name performers and Broadway-quality shows. Hotels in downtown Seattle make an excellent home base for sightseeing, as they are well-located for transit (via light rail, bus, streetcar, and monorail) and conveniently walkable to Pike Place Market, historic Pioneer Square, and the trendy restaurants of South Capitol Hill.

3. Belltown

Belltown spotlights late-night bars, elevated condominiums, and modest local companies. Found just north of downtown, Belltown is convenient to many of Seattle’s prime visitor attractions, but also well-liked by locals for its various stylish boutiques, bars, and eateries. Jazz clubs, rock venues, prohibition-style clandestine bars; they’re all aptly represented here. Not an ideal choice for those seeking peace and stillness – expect extra activity on weekend nights, particularly after 2am. Walk to Pike Place Market, downtown shopping and shows, Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle, Chihuly Museum, food and music festivals, and MoPOP), and the waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park.

a city street filled with lots of tall buildings

4. Pioneer Square

Historic Pioneer Square was once the heart of downtown Seattle and is home to some of the city’s oldest surviving buildings, like the Klondike Gold Rush Museum and the popular Underground Tour. Recently, this region has experienced renewed popularity as modern art galleries, unique shops, trendy eateries, and tree-shaded outdoor seating in the lush Occidental Square have been added. Pioneer Square lies within walking distance of sporting venues like T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field, the downtown ferry terminal at Colman Dock, and Pike Place Market. Multiple transit options including light rail, streetcars, and buses as well as Amtrak trains all have stops located in Pioneer Square, making transit very convenient. Do note that several social service agencies are positioned in Pioneer Square, attracting a fair number of homeless individuals. If you stay in this area, expect to see some people congregating and minuscule panhandling, but these folks are less dangerous and instead primarily lack basic resources.

5. Waterfront

Seattle`s neighborhood along the sea is all about a maritime feeling and beautiful views of ferries gliding across the bay. From the pebbly beaches of Myrtle Edwards Park at its north end to the busy working harbor to the south, there are various things to do along this attractive Puget Sound coastline: The Seattle Art Museum`s Olympic Sculpture Park, The Seattle Aquarium, The Great Wheel, and fantastic seafood eateries. Opportunities to get out and explore the Salish Sea include trips on Argosy Harbor Cruises, the Victoria (or San Juan) Clipper, the WA State ferries at Colman Dock, and the West Seattle Water Taxi. Only a couple of hotels sit directly on Seattle`s waterfront – attempt to reserve a bay-facing room, if possible. The walk from the waterfront up to downtown and Pike Place Market isn`t long, but it is steep, and separated by a busy roadway. This separation makes the waterfront district feel detached from the rest of downtown – which may or may not align with what you`re searching for. Also, work is currently underway to better connect the downtown core to the waterfront district, so expect the area to be a bit disordered.

6. Seattle Center

Anchored by the iconic Space Needle and the recently upgraded Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle Center is a renowned arts and entertainment locale situated just north of Belltown. Created for the 1962 Seattle World`s Fair, with a futuristic theme and mid-20th century design, the Center`s campus houses many great attractions like the Pacific Science Center, The Museum of Pop Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and the Seattle Children`s Museum and Theatre. The Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and numerous theater companies are also located at Seattle Center. Nearby are the Gates Foundation Visitor Center and Olympic Sculpture Park, and the Seattle Monorail provides simple access to downtown and Pike Place Market. Though it`s not Seattle`s most scenic neighborhood, lodgings around Seattle Center are usually less expensive than those downtown, and parking is cheaper and more readily available. The area around Seattle Center quiets at night, making it a good choice for visitors who want to avoid the busiest parts of the city, but lodge near popular attractions. Nevertheless, check your dates, though – if you’re traveling during a festival weekend (especially Memorial Day or Labor Day) or when there’s a major concert at Key Arena, expect the opposite: busier streets, more expensive rooms, and difficult parking.

7. South Lake Union

The up-and-coming South Lake Union neighborhood is a hi-tech hub, home to leading technology and biomedical companies such as Amazon.com. In addition to its namesake urban lake, there are many excellent restaurant options in the area, as well as a couple of great museums and easy streetcar access into downtown. This is a generally quieter area than downtown, and hotels here are more likely to have swimming pools, Space Needle views, and lower rates. Some of South Lake Union’s best attractions include beautiful Lake Union Park, the Museum of History and Industry, the Center for Wooden Boats, and the Kenmore Air float planes that take off and land at Lake Union’s southernmost tip.

8. Capitol Hill/First Hill

a large brick building with a clock on it

Capitol Hill is one of Seattle’s most vibrant neighborhoods popular with locals for its nightlife, arts scene, and great variety of bars and restaurants. The northern end features stately older homes and the leafy Volunteer Park which is home to the Volunteer Park Conservatory and the Seattle Asian Art Museum currently undergoing renovation. Its southern end borders Seattle University. Some of Capitol Hill’s top attractions include Melrose Marketknown for food, the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room, Cal Anderson Park, and Elliott Bay Book Company Seattle’s premier bookstore. It’s an easy walk into downtown from most points in southern Capitol Hill, though taking a cab back up may be preferable given the steep terrain. This area is well-served by transit with a Capitol Hill light rail station, numerous bus routes, and a streetcar line connecting through the International District to Pioneer Square. First Hill lies just to the south of Capitol Hill across the freeway from downtown. While proximate neighbors, First Hill has a more sedate atmosphere than Capitol Hill, sometimes termed “Pill Hill” for its concentration of hospitals and medical facilities. Among First Hill’s notable locations are St. James Cathedral, the charming fireside lounge at the Hotel Sorrento, and the Frye Art Museum.”

9. University District

Northeast of Seattle`s downtown lies the University District (“U-District” to locals), home to the main campus of the University of Washington. This campus features arresting gothic architecture along with two notable museums, the Henry Art Gallery and Burke Museum of Natural History. It also offers mountain views and the famous cherry blossoms of spring. The surrounding neighborhood has many inexpensive and good dining and drinking establishments plus independent boutiques. Every Saturday is a fantastic year-round farmer`s market. University Village, located just downhill from campus, has stylish shops and excellent restaurants in an upscale outdoor shopping center. Though separate from downtown, light rail and various buses make the U District easily accessible from many other neighborhoods and Sea-Tac Airport. The Silver Cloud University District hotel sits only a 20-minute walk from Seattle Children’s Hospital, found east of University Village in the Laurelhurst neighborhood.

10. Ballard

a building with a sign on the side of it

Six miles northwest of the city center in Seattle, the inviting and trendy neighborhood of Ballard developed as an enclave of Scandinavian people, anchored by maritime industries like fishing and shipbuilding. Today Ballard has grown more luxurious yet retains a welcoming community feel, while its local establishments like the Nordic Heritage Museum, Ballard Locks, Shilshole Bay Marina, and Golden Gardens Beach Park have become popular attractions. Ballard`s weekly farmers` market (held year-round on Sundays) is one of the city`s best options, offering local produce, arts and crafts, and entertainment. Seattle`s thriving craft beer industry is prominently featured in Ballard, with many of the city`s top microbreweries found in close proximity to each other. Ballard also makes an excellent locale for a night out, thanks to its many bars, award-winning restaurants, and nightly live music (particularly at the famous Tractor Tavern, along trendy Ballard Ave).
