Premium coastal areas on Tinos

Tinos island is among the most traditional locations in the Cyclades archipelago, with its personality and heritage mostly unchanged throughout time. The island’s lovely capital town, located on the waterfront, goes by the names Tinos Town or Chora and has a wonderful seaside promenade passing colorful sailboats. At the town’s core is a maze of narrow marble roads and alleyways brimming with tavernas, tiny shops, and seaside cafes. If you’re seeking a boutique hotel with a central place in Tinos Town try the Eleana Hotel, or along the town’s harborfront the Avra Hotel offers modest and comfy rooms.

The scenic beaches that fringe Tinos` hilly landscape are many in number and natural beauty. Closest to the town center is Agios Fokas Beach, which also claims the title of largest shoreline on the island while offering diversions like seaside dining. The southeast area where most beach resorts have risen is a short drive away, home to both Agios Ioannis Beach and Agios Sostis Beach. These spots feature some smaller accommodations with nearby taverns and eateries in limited supply. Surfers often make the north coast journey to Kolympithra Beach, renowned not just locally but throughout all of Greece for its picture-perfect waves.

Tinos is perhaps most recognized as the home to its famous pilgrimage church, the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, also referred to as Our Lady of Tinos. The church sits atop a hill over Tinos Town, constructed two centuries ago in the location where a sacred icon of Mary was discovered. Today it is the most popular pilgrimage in Greece, welcoming thousands of visitors yearly – many traveling some of the distance on their knees.

There are tiny traditional towns spread across Tinos, and a trip to the island would not be complete without seeing some of the best: the pretty village of Pyrgos, the traditional fishing village of Panormos, and Volax, with its extraordinary landscape blanketed in massive rocks.

Getting To and Around Tinos

Tinos is only accessible by boat, and is about 21⁄4 hours by ferry from Rafina port in Athens. The ferry port on Tinos is in Tinos Town/Chora, the capital and hub of the island. There is no airport on Tinos; the closest international airport is in Mykonos, a 30-minute ferry ride away.

Tinos is straightforward to navigate by car, as there are only a few primary roads/highways on the island and these are paved and in good condition. (There are numerous secondary roads that are unpaved, ranging from satisfactory to good condition.) Many rental agencies are located in Tinos Town, and rental cars can be booked in advance.

Frequent daily bus transportation is provided from Tinos Town to numerous villages across the island, consisting of the four most popular: Pyrgos, Panormos, Kardiani, and Volax. During mid-June through early September, bus transportation to the beaches operates throughout the day to the following: Agios Ioannis Porto Beach (hourly); Kiona Beach (hourly); Agios Fokas Beach (every half hour); and Kolympithra Beach (three to four times daily).

Best Time to Visit Tinos

Early June through early August offers the best time to visit Tinos for ideal weather and beach experiences. August is very busy on Tinos, particularly the first two weeks of August, as there is an influx of visitors for the annual religious celebrations taking place on August 15 and the two weeks preceding. It can present a challenge to secure accommodation during this timeframe.

From May to mid-June is the ideal time to visit Tinos for walking or hiking, when the flowers are in full bloom and before the heat of summer. There are many established hiking trails and footpaths that intersect the island, including a popular route from Tinos Town up to the peak of Mount Exomvourgo.
