Andros Beach Basics

Some of Andros Island`s best and most accessible beaches stretch along the western coast south of the ferry port at Gavrio towards Batsi Bay. From north to south these include: Agios Petros Beach,Golden Sands Beach (also known as Chrissi Ammos Beach), Kypri Beach, and Batsi Beach. All offer swimming, sunbathing, and amenities like beach bars, sun loungers and umbrellas.

  • The ideal family beach is Batsi Beach, with tranquil waters that are crystal clear blue. Batsi is conveniently located for visitors lodged in the capital town of Chora, situated on the eastern part of the island, as local buses frequently ferry people to this popular shore throughout the day.
  • The island’s most photographed beach is Tis Grias to Pidima, which features a pillar of rock in its dazzling blue-green waters.
  • The best shores situated in a remote territory incorporate Zorkos Beach and Vitali Beach on the island’s north shoreline. The two of these coastlines are simply open by vehicle through a less-traveled mountainous street. Traveling to these coastlines can feel like an experience all alone. Achla Beach is a prized and pristine appeal; in any case a 4Γ—4 SUV or truck is a must to achieve this segregated region of the island.
  • The optimum shores for water activities on Andros are Kyrpi Beach and Korthi Bay, offering some of the best windsurfing in the Cyclades – as well as equipment rental and lessons at Kypri’s Wesurfin’ Club.
  • At present, Andros lacks equipment (SEATRAC) at any beach that enables unassisted beach access for individuals with mobility issues.

10 BEST BEACHES OF ANDROS

1. Batsi Beach – west coast

This beach welcoming visitors and locals alike is one of the busiest on the island, with lovely natural surrounds and cafes, tavernas and hotels just steps away. Next to the beach is a picturesque harbor where seaside cafes and colorful boats line the waterfront. Batsi is suitable for families with a sandy seabed gently sloping into the water. There is a toy store on the promenade selling inflatables & beach toys; for treats, there’s an ice cream & yogurt shop.

Partners tend to appreciate the section of beach nearer to the harbor more, where music plays from the tavernas and there are usually fewer children. There is a wide assortment of beach loungers and umbrellas available to rent at varying costs. Alternatively, across the bay is Kolona Beach which is a favored spot for grownups furnished with a infamous beach bar that’s accessible by automobile, foot, or chartered local boat.

A lovely walkway wraps the entire bay from the northern end of the beach, along the shoreline and harbor, to a public viewing area up and around the southern corner. The bus stops at the beach area (and also two other stops along the bay), and several large parking lots are conveniently situated directly across the street from the beach. Located 6 km from the ferry port and 21 km to Chora.

2. Zorkos Beach – north coast

Zorkos (or Zorgos) Beach is a stunning and remote crescent-shaped beach with turquoise waters and white pebbly sand in a rugged landscape.

The beach has great width, and the waters run deep, as the slope into the sea is rapid. Due to its northerly situation, it’s sometimes breezy, particularly in the afternoon. There is one beachside eating establishment with sun loungers and umbrellas, and restrooms available to beach patrons. Parking is plentiful on the beach.

Traveling through the country landscape to arrive at this shore is an enjoyable experience, however the road travels through hilly terrain and becomes particularly steep on the final stretch as it winds down the hillside and descends to the beach. Note the last section of the road is an unpaved portion with several sharp turns. There is no bus service to Zorkos Beach.

3. Tis Grias to Pidima Beach – east coast

This often-photographed beach (defined as β€œthe old woman jumps”) is exceptional and unforgettable. A little and wild non-organized shore (there are no conveniences here) encompassed by soaring cliffs, Tis Grias to Pidima Beach is famed for its towering and magnificent rock on the beach that appears like an old woman wearing a handkerchief. The beach has golden sand and is good for swimming, with clear turquoise water and a gradual slope. There are no beach bars here, so bring your snacks – and an umbrella if you require one, as there are no trees for shade.

Access to the beach requires traversing a rather steep dirt path alongside a cliffside, so it may not be suitable for younger children. Located 23 km south of Chora town. Public transportation via bus can provide access to Tis Grias and Pidima Beach, but some walking remains from the drop-off point.

  • Recommended Tis Grias to Pidima Beach Lodging
There are no hotels near Tis Grias to Pidima Beach.

4. Golden Sand Beach – west coast

The sand at Golden Sand Beach (also called Chrissi Ammos Beach) is said to have arguably the finest texture on the entire island – with an extremely delicate composition, lacking pebbles, and a golden hue that appears luminous in daylight.

Situated in a small cove, this beach is well protected from the wind. It’s excellent for swimming with shallow turquoise water and a sandy seabed. There’s a beach bar here with music that attracts a younger adult crowd; Golden Sand Beach can be crowded at the peak of summer. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent, and water sports equipment can be rented – though there are fewer options here than at nearby Kypri Beach (600 m south). Changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards are on site.

Golden Sand Beach can easily be accessed by bus, as the bus stops directly at the beach. There is a parking lot next to the highway which is elevated from the beach, with stairs going down (approximately 40 steps) to the sand below)..

5. Agios Petros – west coast

The most extended stretch of beach on the island boasts lively beach bars and beach gatherings and is very popular with young adults.

Also known as St. Peter’s Beach, the transparent blue waters, smooth sand, and abundance of amenities at Agios Petros attract many visitors, yet even during peak periods it doesn`t feel crowded. This is a fully organized beach, with numerous beach bars and tavernas to choose from as well as sun loungers available for rental. A great spot for swimming and sunbathing.

Vehicle parking near the shore and changing rooms (including handicapped friendly spaces) and restrooms are available close to the beach. Situated 3 km south of Gavrio.
Agios Petros is directly on the bus route, with the bus stopping precisely at the beach.

  • Recommended Agios Petros Hotels
There are no hotels at this beach; villas and apartment rentals are available.

6. Kypri Beach – west coast

Prime beachfront for watersports like windsurfing, wakeboarding, stand-up paddling, and water skiing. Equipment rentals and lessons also available on site.

Situated on a wide bay, Kypri Beach is long and the water is beautifully clear emerald green and excellent for swimming. There are several beach bars with beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent. The washrooms and changing facilities are directly on the beach.

Kypri Beach is easily accessible too, as it is located just off the highway, and there is ample parking available. The local bus route stops at the beach as well.

7. Vitali Beach – north coast

A scenic beach in a remote and rugged locale, situated in a picturesque and tranquil cove with a small church overlooking the bay.

A great spot for snorkeling, the water at Vitali Beach is crystal clear and deepens sharply as you enter with a steeply sloped seabed; the beach itself is mostly pebbles with some sand. Two beach bars provide sun loungers, sun umbrellas and washrooms.

There is no bus service to Vitali Beach, which can only be accessed by vehicle. The driving route is over a mountainous road that is narrow in spots, with several hairpin turns. The road surface changes from pavement to dirt as you approach the beach.

  • Recommended Vitali Beach Hotels
There are no hotels near Vitali Beach.

8. Aneroussa Beach – west coast

This Blue Flag beach is also known as Delavogia Beach, and boasts clear emerald-colored waters that are wonderful for swimming.

The beach is petite yet picturesque, with a seabed comprising sand and level rock. While open to the public, most visitors here are guests at the above cliffside hotel operating a beach bar supplying music, sun loungers, and umbrellas. Many like to plunge from the rock precipice at the south end into the water.

There is no bus stop at Aneroussa Beach. The closest bus stop is in Batsi, 1 km (15-minute walk) away.

9. Paraporti Beach – Chora (east coast)

This beach near Chora is accessed by an extended series of steps just south of Kairi Square in the Chora town center.

Paraporti is a long and wide coastline that is open to the north winds of the Aegean Sea during summer, so it can become quite gusty at times. Note swimming is not suggested when the breezes are powerful and the ocean is rough, but it`s a good place for a quick dip to cool down on a hot summer day.

The beach offers views of Tourlitis Lighthouse. There’s a beach bar at the far end, a taverna, sun loungers, and umbrellas. Located 15 min walk from the central bus station at the Chora roundabout, with a parking area right beside the beach.

Located close to Chora on the northern side of the peninsula, this large beach features a scuba diving school. Both beginner and experienced divers can explore the island’s many underwater caves and shipwrecks.

Neiborio Beach is also preferred by families with children as its shallow waters are calm and transparent. The beach is sandy with lots of sunbeds available. There are restaurants, cafes, bars, and a mini-mart directly across the road from the beach. At the far end of the beach is the Andros Yacht Club, which has a swimming platform.

Vehicle parking options are limited alongside Neiborio Beach, a 20-minute walk from the central bus station located at the roundabout in Chora town.
