Best Places to Stay in Praiano

  • Praiano sits relaxed on the coast between the more famous Positano to the west and Amalfi to the east. It offers a calm respite from the bustling scenes of those places (especially in August when Positano becomes quite crowded with tourists). Here you will find a pair of beaches, a handful of exquisite churches that are centuries old, and pleasant pathways dotted with art connecting everything. The Praiano region is shaped like a V and spreads out about 1.5 kilometers between the two top ends. The bottom point is a little over one kilometer to either of the top ends. Central Praiano makes up the eastern half of the V, while the hamlet of Vettica Maggiore makes up the western half. Praiano has the sunrise; Vettica Maggiore has the sunset.
  • While less crowded, there are still plenty of activities available in Praiano and generally for lower prices than what you`ll find in nearby Positano. The beaches here tend to have smaller areas of pebbles rather than sand, but the water is incredibly transparent with fewer tour boats and no ferries stopping here to add to the sea traffic. Marina di Praia (also known simply as La Praia) is the main beach in central Praiano, home to a casual beach club, a free public beach area, a diving center, and a handful of family-run restaurants. A popular beach club is Il Pirata located along the footpath heading back toward town. One of the main landmarks of central Praiano is the 16th-century Church of San Luca Evangelista, renowned for its elaborate tile floor design, valuable artworks, and silver reliquary bust honoring the town`s patron saint. The town itself consists of an elevated network of driveable roads, walking paths, and staircases. The eight most frequented trails are part of the NaturArte Routes, a form of open-air art museum featuring colorful ceramic depictions of traditional life, mythology, sea creatures, and more. Head west to Vettica Maggiore to reach the best known church in the region, the beautiful San Gennaro, with its dome and bell tower patterned in tiles. The primary beach here is La Gavitella, home to One Fire Beach, considered the best day club on the Amalfi Coast during daytime hours.
  • Considered the premier hotel located centrally in Praiano, the Hotel Onda Verde is highly recommended. For guests staying in Vettica Maggiore, the top choice is the Casa Angelina.
  • As mentioned, there is no ferry service in Praiano. However, buses to Amalfi and Positano run all day on the main road. Note that you cannot purchase bus tickets onboard the bus. Bus tickets can be obtained before your ride at tobacco shops (tabaccherie), newspaper stands, souvenir shops, bars, and cafes. Or drop in at the charming Bob Art and Winery to pick up bus tickets, along with handmade ceramics (made by Bob) and a lovingly curated assortment of local wine.
