Athens Hotels for Families – Where to Stay

a young man standing in front of a stone wall

  • Athens is packed with tourists from early May until late October – book hotels as early as possible.
  • Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma, Makriyanni, Psirri, and the City Center neighborhoods are the best regions for families to lodge in Athens. These areas are pedestrian-friendly and near the city’s most beloved attractions. Akadimia, Kolonaki, Thiseio, and Koukaki are somewhat quieter with numerous casual restaurants and shops, but somewhat more distant to walk to the primary sights. The Athens Riviera is a little outside of town but presents idyllic beaches simply a brief taxi ride away from the Acropolis.
  • The farther north one travels (closer to Omonia) the city becomes less attractive and risky. The “negative” areas are usually safe but not very pleasant. Staying south of Sofokleous Street helps avoid the least appealing sections.
  • Those needing an early start to catch a ferry should stay near the Monistiraki metro station which provides quick direct trains to Piraeus port. The A for Athens hotel, located steps from the station in the heart of Athens, offers convenient access while still being within short walking distance of sites like Plaka and the Acropolis. Alternatively, taxis from any hotel can drop passengers directly at the ferry terminal.
  • Athens can easily fill two or three days with sightseeing but the highlights can be seen in one full (busy) day.
  • The highlight of Athens is the Acropolis ( GetYourGuide has an excellent time-saving tour). If only one attraction can be visited, it should be the Acropolis (and its most famous construction, the Parthenon).
