Samouelian Musical Instruments Shop in Athens

Music aficionados will not be disappointed in this family-run gem, owned by the inspiring and welcoming Giannis Samouelian. A third-generation instrument craftsman, Giannis is also an accomplished modern and traditional musician who has taught at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music and Arts educational institution.

Originally from Armenia, Giannis Samouelian`s grandfather`s family, including his father, endured significant hardship. In 1915, they fled the Armenian Genocide by escaping to Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey). However, they were forced to leave Smyrna again in 1922 after the Burning of Smyrna, ultimately finding refuge in Greece. With no land or financial resources, Giannis` grandfather, a musician, started crafting musical instruments to sell. This began the Samouelian family business of crafting musical wares, which remains headquartered in its original 1928 Monastiraki location after renovations following a 1953 fire damaged the building.

Today, Giannis operates his shop alongside his sons, imparting his expertise to the next generation. All of the store`s Greek musical instruments are individually crafted by Giannis and his sons; these handmade items include stringed tools like the bouzouki, baglamas, tzouras, and laouto. A wide assortment of guitars, violins, wind instruments, amplifiers, and accessories are also available. Online ordering and international delivery are offered.

Located approximately 150 meters from Monastiraki Square. Follow the pedestrian walkway under the sign marked β€œAthens Flea Market” next to the Monastiraki metro station building; it is a brief 130-meter stroll from there.
