Athens Hotels – Tips & Info

  • Athens is a city that is great to visit. Many people enjoy exploring it. You may have heard that some parts are less attractive (and that is true of some areas), but there is much to see within the walkable central region. Important sights there include the Acropolis and two of my favorite museums in Greece: the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum. From April to November, the streets are crowded with locals and travelers alike, with lively restaurants and trendy bars. Athens can easily fill two full days with quality things to see and do. I recommend staying there for at least 2 or 3 full days.
  • Locations to Lodge in Athens: Among my favorite neighborhoods (and what I advise for the majority of initial visitors) are Plaka,Monastiraki,Syntagma,Psirri, the City Center, and Makriyanni – all are walking range to dining, shopping, the Acropolis, and other prime ancient sites. To combine city sights with a dreamlike beach, take into account lodging on the Athens Riviera.
  • Athens experiences high volumes of tourists from May through October, and particularly during the summer months of July and August. Advance booking of hotels is recommended for the most competitive rates.
  • Most ferries to Santorini, Mykonos, and the Greek Islands depart between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. from the Piraeus ferry port. When catching an early morning ferry, I like to lodge near the Monastiraki metro station, which provides quick, direct trains to the Piraeus Port for just €1.40. If you plan to take a taxi to the port, it doesn`t matter where you reside in the city. Good hotels close proximity to Monastiraki Station (for convenient access to the train to the ferry port): A for AthensPlaka Hotel360 DegreesAdrian Hotel
  • Daytime taxis between the airport and downtown hotels cost €40. Nighttime (midnight to 5am) taxis cost €55. From downtown hotels to the Piraeus ferry port costs about €25.
  • I do not prefer staying in close proximity to Omonia Square or in Piraeus (ferry port). While these areas are about as safe as any location in the historic center, they are harsh, somewhat unpleasant visually, and farther removed from attractions. There are preferable places to lodge in Athens.
  • My most loved restaurant in Plaka is Psarras (Fisherman’s Taverna) – a magical place on the steps down below the Acropolis with wonderful traditional Greek dishes.
  • My preferred bar in central Athens is Baba Au Rum – a friendly spot for classic and signature cocktails made with high quality spirits, fresh herbs, and homemade sodas.
  • Top Activities in Athens – One tour worth checking out is the Authentic Greek Food Walking Tour.

Plaka Hotels

a large group of people walking down a sidewalk

My favorite neighborhood in Athens provides a lively and friendly atmosphere while also appealing greatly to visitors. Known as Plaka, it is situated at the base of the iconic Acropolis structure (an absolute must-see in Athens). As a pedestrian-friendly web of ancient streets, Plaka contains eateries, shops for tourists, and lodging. Notable sites encompass the Tower of the Winds, Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Hadrian’s Arch, the Jewish Museum of Greece, and the Museum of Greek Folk Art.

The Best Hotels in Plaka

Monastiraki Hotels

people standing in front of a building

Adjacent to Plaka and having a comparable feel, Monastiraki is also a excellent area to stay with many dining and shopping venues. The neighborhood is a little less touristy and has more antique, arts, crafts, and clothing shops than Plaka. Sites here include the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Stoa of Attalos, Hadrian’s Library, and the Museum of Greek Popular Musical Instruments. It also serves as home to a large Flea Market on Sunday mornings. The region is served by the Monastiraki station (lines 1 and 3). Line 1 offers a direct route to Piraeus Ferry Port while line 3 heads directly to the Athens International Airport, making Monastiraki a good choice if you have an early ferry or flight to catch.

Syntagma Hotels

a large building with a clock on top of it

The commercial and tourist center of Athens. In Syntagma you’ll locate 5-star accommodations, eateries, shopping outlets, banks, airline workplaces, and the structures of Greek Parliament. The National Historical Museum is situated in the old Parliament building on Stadiou street and the National Garden offers a cooler, shadier respite from sweltering Athens’ summers.

The Best Hotels in Syntagma

Psirri Hotels

A diamond in the rough, Psirri features hip bars, live music, and local authentic dining in this recently revitalized neighborhood popular with locals and visitors for its artisan workshops and eclectic style.

Makriyanni Hotels

Upscale small neighborhood on the south side of the Acropolis, home to the Acropolis Museum. Neoclassical mansions, artisan shops, rooftop restaurants, and sidewalk cafés abound. The wide pedestrian street, Dionysiou Areopagitou, forms its northern border running from Filopappou Hill in the west all the way to Zeus’ Temple in the east.

City Center Hotels

Brimming with vigor and worldliness, the City Center is consistently buzzing with inventive dining, street cuisine, boutiques, galleries, and cocktail lounges along Kolokotrini Street and Agia Irini Square. The primary attractions here are the Central Market and the National Historical Museum situated in the Old Parliament building, now transformed into an exhibit hall.

Kolonaki Hotels

a city filled with lots of buildings and trees

A residential neighborhood northwest of Syntagma Square filled with upscale retailers, eateries, boutique lodgings, and cafes. Sites involve the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, and National War Museum. It`s within walking distance from here to Plaka and the Acropolis.

The Best Hotels in Kolonaki

Thiseio Hotels

a city with lots of trees and buildings

Situated on the northern slope of the lush Filopappou Hill with scenic vistas of the Acropolis emerging from the greenery below (most other areas offer the Acropolis from a rockier point of view), the Thiseio neighborhood contains a green oasis in the heart of the city. Notable sites here include the National Observatory of Athens, Greece`s oldest research center. Once a working-class area, it is now a popular locale on weekends for brunches amid nature, as well as sunset panoramas from its various hillsides.

The Best Hotels in Thiseio

Koukaki Hotels

a stone wall in front of a mountain range

The Koukaki area, similar to Plaka and Monastiraki, sits at the base of the Acropolis and looks up to view the Parthenon. It`s an easy walk from here to Plaka and Syntagma, but the region has a more local atmosphere with less tourists. There are many dining establishments and cafes on the neighborhood`s streets and plazas.

The Best Hotels in Koukaki

Akadimia Hotels

a woman walking down a sidewalk next to a building

A tranquil neighborhood just a brief walk to Athens’ most popular destinations. Akadimia is home to the Athenian Trilogy: a complex of three Classical architectural buildings – the Academy of Athens, the University of Athens, and the National Library (AKA Vallianeio Megaron) – commissioned after Greece achieved its independence. Luxury shopping can be found on stylish Voukourestiou street (above), which continues into the Kolonaki area.

Athens Riviera Hotels

a beach filled with lots of boats on a sunny day

Providing the ideal combination of sunny coastal resorts and convenient access to the Acropolis, the Athens Riviera stretches along a long swathe of Blue Flag beaches and flashy marinas south of the city. Attractions here include the natural thermal waters at Lake Vouliagmeni and the ancient Temple of Poseidon perched atop Cape Sounio. Beach clubs, nightclubs, shopping, and dining are all readily available here.

The Best Hotels on the Athens Riviera

Piraeus Hotels (Ferry Port)

The city by the sea south of Athens where boats arrive and depart taking travelers to the islands. There isn`t much there appealing to sightseers besides the ferries, but if an early departure is needed staying here is a practical choice (personally I would still recommend staying in Athens itself). In the busiest seasons tourists will always be milling around near the harbor and subway station, so neither an early morning voyage or late night arrival need cause worry. It takes approximately 30 minutes by metro (line 1) to get downtown Athens from the port. From the airport to the port takes almost an hour using the metro (line 3). The Port Square is the finest hotel at the ferry harbor, straight across the footbridge to the port and beside the train station providing routes to central Athens and the airport. The Alex is the most luxurious hotel in Piraeus, situated on a hilltop overlooking the natural harbor of Mikrolimano, approximately two km from the ferries.
