Koh Samui Hotels – Tips & Recommendations

The 30 Best Koh Samui Hotels

1. The Four Seasons – west of Mae Nam

a beach scene with a view of the ocean If peace and tranquility are priority over nightlife and activity, I suggest the Four Seasons resort on Koh Samui island as the premier luxury accommodation. Situated apart from the crowds on a hilltop setting, it provides incredible ocean views from plush suites and villas. The on-site restaurant, Koh, is renowned as one of the island`s finest dining experiences. Amenities include kickboxing classes, kayaking excursions, and breathtaking sunsets appreciated from the privacy of a small but well-maintained beach or the beachfront swimming pool and eatery. Families will appreciate the kids` club and seclusion the property offers, despite being just moments from more bustling shoreline towns by vehicle.

2. Hansar Samui – Bophut

a large pool of water with palm trees Situated centrally with a lovely setting, this property features a beautiful pool area, pebbly beach, and is popular among families. All rooms are located in attractive low-rise buildings. The main building faces the ocean, and even the ground floor rooms are likely to enjoy exceptional ocean views, while the other two buildings look out over the lawns and pool. The partly enclosed breezy balcony in the Seaview Rooms ensures privacy, and the décor is described as `chocolate and cream`. The beach is wonderful – made up more of small pebbles than sand – though tranquility could be disrupted by jet skis. The raised infinity pool includes a tiny adjacent rice paddy. The lawn space is limited, with fewer palm trees than anticipated, but this means views of the sea are less likely to be blocked. Located in central Bophut, with plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants along the main road. It`s at the end of a delightful beachside path for cycling and walking that leads to the renowned Fisherman`s Village, a converted area featuring bistros and boutiques.

3. Amari Koh Samui – Chaweng

a beach filled with lots of colorful umbrellas Recently renovated and looking beautiful. Great pool and beachfront position. Situated in a quieter section of North Chaweng Beach but still an easy walk to eateries, nightlife, and shopping. The Deluxe Family Duplexes are great for families.

4. Ammatara Pura Pool Villas – Lamai

a beach with a pool and a balcony Offering the pinnacle of lavish accommodations along an outstanding stretch of coastline, this exclusive yet conveniently located resort exudes royal extravagance, though some elements border on ostentatious display. Pool villas contain one or two bedrooms with vistas of either the landscaped greenery, glistening waters, or the ocean beyond, however promises of unobstructed seaside panoramas aren`t always fulfilled. Decor across the Thai-inspired villas oscillates between sumptuous and flamboyant. The highlight is certainly the expansive main swimming complex with its infinity edges and arched walkways, though the open areas also house numerous sculptures and buildings of ambiguous purpose. With a pristine private beach featuring finely raked golden sands, the property is situated in a more relaxed section of one of the island`s prime stretches.

5. Six Senses Samui – near Choeng Mon

a beautiful view of the ocean from a boat Situated along a secluded hilltop between two coastlines, guests are transported around the vast grounds via vehicle (and some villas can only be accessed via stairways). Luxurious private pool villas and suites are offered – each separate and isolated, providing breathtaking ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows. All accommodations are very luxurious and elegant but not excessively ornate. Steep stairways lead down to a picturesque beach cove with smooth sands and calm waters, while the cliffside setting of the infinity pool is undoubtedly one of the finest in Asia. Adding to the immense appeal are thatched recreational huts containing a library and games room. Understandably, such spaciousness and seclusion also equates to isolation, as the location at the far northeastern tip is only accessible by taxi, with no other cafes or facilities within easy walking proximity

6. Garrya Tongsai Bay Resort – near Choeng Mon

a beach filled with lots of colorful umbrellas The pool villas here are truly delightful. This resort is a favorite for honeymooners and couples seeking repose, tranquility, and a beautiful beach. Shops and eateries at Fisherman’s Village are just a brief taxi ride away, but there isn’t much within walking distance.

7. Vana Belle – Chaweng Noi

a view from the balcony of a swimming pool Luxurious, modern, tranquil, lavish and not too secluded. Water flows serenely through ponds from the street-level lobby down to the ocean in the distance as guests are given a ‘cleansing greeting’ (of face and hands) to purify the spirit. Exclusively providing suites and villas with a private infinity pool, all properties feature awe-inspiring coastal views. The Tropical Pool Villas are truly immense, with full-length windows on 3 sides, a refined Thai design and open-plan bathroom overlooking a private garden with a freestanding tub. A personal butler is also included. The sands below are bleached-white and immaculately raked, while the main pool is sizable considering all guests have a private pool. The entrance lies 300m from the main road in Chaweng Noi. This beach is smaller and to the south of Chaweng, easily accessible by songthaew taxi truck. Some down-to-earth cafés are also scattered along the nearby main ring-road.

8. Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort – Bophut

a large pool of water surrounded by palm trees This highly praised resort features elegant facilities on a smaller scale than most, making it very family-friendly. The room varieties differ based on views of either the surrounding sea from upper floors or tropical gardens on the ground level. They are arranged in low-level buildings with windows angled toward the ocean, though some surprisingly lack a functional balcony. Separated and raised higher, many suites face directly toward the unspoiled beach scenery and shore access. The infinity pool offers a magical lagoon-like shape beside the beach, with palm tree `islands` scattered about – while the white sandy beach provides calm waters. Additional appealing amenities include a kids` club, playground, game room, tennis court, and movie theater.

9. Banana Fan Sea Resort – Chaweng

a beach filled with palm trees and palm trees A reasonably priced resort located in the central area of Chaweng beach. The property has a wide selection of room styles including villa, suite and bungalow options across a narrow strip of land, however only a few room types provide scenic ocean views. Some Superior Rooms situated near the lobby have confined spaces, while most within the gardens are spacious and brightly decorated with Thai design elements. The bungalows clustered in groups of four facing the gardens are smaller and simpler inside like a functional motel, with the balcony potentially providing glimpses of the sea. Most villas are semi-detached yet still clustered closely together, so a balcony might directly face another across the pathway in the garden. Attached to the primary beachfront pool is a children`s splash zone and two hot tubs

10. Bandara Resort & Spa, Samui – Bophut

a swimming pool filled with lots of blue water

Prime setting, comfy and suitable for families. Among extended lawns and gardens of banyan trees between the main street and shoreline, the lodging is in two separate areas, yet none afford direct ocean perspectives. The villas are extremely secluded behind raised walls and feature a splendid pool and stylish sunken bath flanked by private gardens, but there`s too much concrete and not enough color to suit my tastes. There is a focus on families and the resort provides some amenities for children. Of the four pools, one is lagoon-shaped and infinity-edged, mostly for adults; another is long, with elephant spouts and thatched cabanas. And the striking beach has wonderful sand and sloping palms.

11. Banyan Tree – Between Lamai and Chaweng

a swimming pool filled with water next to a building Seclusion alongside resort amenities like exceptional pools and private beach. Luxury marries removal from bustle yet driving distance retains access to amenities. Combination invites rest and revitalization.

12. Belmond Napasai – near Mae Nam

a bed sitting on top of a beach next to palm trees Exclusive beachfront lodgings located steps from the serene coastline offer an idyllic setting ideal for intimate getaways. Access may prove challenging for limited mobility due to numerous stairways though scenic seclusion and tranquility abound.

13. Bo Phut Resort & Spa – Bophut

a patio area with chairs, tables, and umbrellas The likable Thai design of this property places it away from the bustle. Rooms are scattered among immaculately manicured gardens containing towering palm trees, and with no building rising higher than two levels, they have wisely avoided overdevelopment. Private villas are individually situated and secluded, and some include a shining turquoise swimming pool. Furnishings are elegant, including a four-poster bed, spacious lounge area and colorful tiles, and many windows provide light. Situated about 100 meters from the main road, no rooms are impacted by traffic noise. The principal pool is particularly inviting, and the beach is idyllic – bleached by the sun and meticulously raked, with island perspectives – and thankfully far from jet skis.

14. Buri Rasa Village Samui – Chaweng

a large pool of water surrounded by trees With a delightful tropical atmosphere, this hotel has a traditional design where no building exceeds two floors. The mustard-colored brick ground floors and deep wood upper levels are scattered throughout a garden path lined with fish ponds. Spacious, vibrantly decorated villas vary in size and position near the grounds. Upper floor versions have elevated ceilings, balconies with garden or sea views, and majestic bathrooms with sunken tubs. Ground level options offer seclusion behind walls and private gardens, with some including small plunge pools. However, the main pool situated in the center of the lawn surrounded by no decking or shade seems less inviting, with gray tiles and no edges. The beach is clean and wide, albeit busy as the resort sits downtown in popular Chaweng area.

15. Farmers Villa CoLiving Space – near Mae Nam

a pool with a bunch of green umbrellas in it This unique calm setting provides orderly rows of wooden houses facing inward and overlooking uncommon rice-fields (also taking pleasure in by geese). With essentially identical design and decor, all grant spaciousness, an abundance of windows and a sizable balcony. A handful of more luxurious houses, with a private pool also facing lily ponds, feature a heightened ceiling, windows on three sides, ample luggage space, and unusual Romanesque lampshades. The elevated infinity-style pool remains substantial contemplating few guests but appears a little overlooked by staff, while the elegant pond-side café justifies visiting anyway. Yet all this Bali-style tranquility lies only 150m from the main road in Bang Por and another 700m from a beach. Though this area along the north coast is notably less developed, some amenities exist within walking distance and is accessible by infrequent songthaew taxi trucks

16. Idyllic Samui Resort – near Choeng Mon

a house with a pool and a pool table Secluded, exclusive, ideal for groups but very remote. Situated on the far northeast tip of the island, there are gated clusters of villas, each with between two and five bedrooms and sharing a swimming pool. Perfect for groups or families, it is still private and peaceful if renting just one villa alone. Each is spacious, and features a sizable lounge area, fully-equipped kitchen and abundant outdoor furniture along lengthy patios. However, the minor bedrooms may be a little on the small side and somewhat dimly lit. It faces a scenic cove of white sands and calm waters, but only one cluster of villas faces the ocean. This seclusion comes at the cost of convenience, though; It`s only accessible by chartered taxi, even though shuttle services are provided to a nearby beach and village. There is no café onsite, but meals can be cooked or delivered, and there are restaurants in 2 neighboring resorts.

17. Khwan Beach Resort

a large swimming pool surrounded by palm trees Unique option – adults-only camping with safari theme (and villas). This property provides an unusual mix of luxury villas and glamping tents. Hidden behind bamboo walls facing the light blue pool, the Tented Villas are typically beige and earth-toned colors reminiscent of a safari lodge. The split-level brick Pool Villas feature a small kitchen, modern decor, and sizable gardens, though some overlook a still creek. The beach lies around 100 meters away.

18. The Library – Chaweng

a pool filled with lots of water next to a building An ultra stylish, trendy, and luxurious hotel in the heart of Chaweng. The red-colored pool catches everyone’s eye and the cocktail bar attracts the hip crowd. Beautiful minimalist suites (ground floor with patio) and studios (upper floor with balcony). Breakfast served on the beach. Two of Chaweng’s coolest bars are on the property: an open air beach bar and air-conditioned wine bar on the street-side.

19. Lotus Samui – near Mae Nam

a large white house sitting in front of a palm tree

Serene yet privately positioned deluxe villas ideal for groups or expansive families. A handful of plush villa complexes with 2-5 bedrooms are lined along a narrow block. Visitors can reserve the whole villa complex or, if available, specific bedrooms, each with an attached restroom. Each cluster of villas shares a considerable pool and opulent lounge area; some even have access to a personal chef and private kitchen. All bedrooms are spacious, luxurious and separately decorated with elegant furnishings. Only 1 villa complex faces the ocean, but all guests can utilize the principal beachside pool next to a breezy strip of sand. The neighboring Banyan Beach Villas can likewise be reserved entirely or in part, with separate bedrooms. It’s in Bang Por, half an island from the primary beach resort areas, with little nearby.

20. Peace Resort – Bophut

a large group of cats sitting on top of a tree Offering a relaxed vibe in a central location, with 1970s-style bungalows. Originally one of the island`s pioneering backpacker accommodations, it has since undergone a full renovation while maintaining an easygoing charm. The pool villas are individually secluded and concealed behind hedges, and others contain two levels with stylish wooden shutters across the upstairs bedroom. Most lodging consists of bungalows dispersed throughout extensive gardens decorated with abundant flora. Exuding rustic appeal, these provide ample windows and a sizable balcony. Though separate structures, they are tightly positioned together. The lagoon-shaped pool facilitates breezes and views while the beach is small yet spotless. There’s also a small library, on-site dive center, and sizable building for cooking classes. And catering well to families with a kids’ club and spacious playground area.

21. Anavana Beach Resort – Chaweng

a patio area with a pool and a pool table Exquisite, tranquil, and romantic garden retreat situated in central Chaweng. A winding garden path bordered by tropical flora, lotus ponds and ‘waterfalls’ leads to just 24 cottages. Featuring an adorable traditional design of ornamental roofs and terracotta tiles, most are semi-detached, and all are secluded behind thickets of ferns. A sliding door from the tiled balcony opens to a spacious combined lounge/bedroom and gorgeous bathroom featuring a sunken bathtub-cum-shower overlooking an indoor garden. Side windows facing lush greenery add to the sense of space and serenity, but some permit limited light inside at times. The pool is modest yet adequate for the restricted number of guests.

22. Rocky’s Boutique Resort – near Lamai

a row of umbrellas on a beach near the water A secluded yet enchanting resort south of Lamai offering fantastic cuisine and swimming facilities alongside a picturesque but intimate beach. Ultra-luxurious villas include private swimming pools.

23. Rummana Boutique Resort – Lamai

a row of wooden benches in front of a garden This intimate boutique resort on Koh Samui offers a tranquil oasis amid landscaped tropical gardens. Arranged along a lengthy winding pathway overflowing with greenery, individual villas open onto the walkway and a few units directly face the shoreline. Each villa features vivid interior design schemes, spacious lounging areas, recently updated modern bathrooms with colored tiles, and cross-ventilation through windows on opposite sides adding to the calm ambiance. Small private balconies overlook manicured gardens dotted with chairs and ponds. TheInfinity-shaped swimming pool presents ocean vistas along the slim sloping beach bordering the bay, though sand disappears at high tide. Situated a short distance down a narrow lane from the busy center of Lamai, the beach is swiftly accessible by local transport or on foot through the sand.

24. SALA Samui Choengmon Beach – Choeng Mon

a large pool of water with palm trees Single and two room villas with independent pool are genuinely sensational. There’s a wonderful shoreline pool, a splendid spa, and decent quality bistros. On the off chance that you’re on your sentimental trek make beyond any doubt to bring up so at checkin as you’ll likely get some pleasant freebies.

25. Samui Jasmine Resort – Lamai

a street filled with lots of plants and trees Charming, boutique-style and idyllic beachside setting. This hotel is delightful in every aspect: from the helpful staff to the oceanside location and stylish décor, which is refreshingly novel in each room. It offers a limited number of rooms in a low-level block and clusters of villas secluded behind thick foliage, although none are separated. Rooms feature a very likable modern Thai design, with weavings above the bed, and an open-layout bathroom. Along the upper two floors, sizeable balconies offer views of the sea but are usually obscured by the rear of some villas. The décor in the villas is even more contemporary and stylish. The pool is meters from the beach, which is busy but still appealing.

26. Santiburi Koh Samui – Mae Nam

a beach area with chairs, tables and umbrellas Spacious and tranquil accommodation surrounded by vast grounds requiring transport, directly situated besides the ocean offer entrance lounges with couches and sizable marble bathrooms connected to walk-in closets. Those including private pools view the gardens with current style, individual soothing space, and dining areas, with many entire-length windows confronting lush private gardens wherever achievable. About 300m in duration, the beach includes palms and is uniquely calm. Extra features incorporate a sizable leisure center, jogging trail, and free bicycles, while youngsters are well supplied with a playground and superb children`s club

27. Sheraton Samui Resort – Chaweng Noi

a beach filled with lots of green umbrellas This luxurious family-friendly resort boasts an exceptional beach and multiple room types. Superior Rooms and Studios offer similar comforts, however the latter provides additional space and a Jacuzzi balcony overlooking the ocean (depending on tree placement). Spacious 1-2 bedroom suites include a lounge region, double balconies, and panoramic perspectives of the pool, foliage, and crashing waves below. The expansive pool allows for sand-covered seating, while the wide clean beach attracts visitors. Younger guests are warmly welcomed with an activities area, smaller pool, and one of Thailand`s premier children`s clubs. Situated slightly south of the lively Chaweng district yet still accessible by local transports, this resort provides relaxation in a prime coastal location.

28. W Koh Samui – Mae Nam

a marina filled with lots of colorful umbrellas This beachfront hotel provides a luxury experience with private swimming pools in all rooms and a complimentary shuttle into the lively Chaweng district. Guests can relax by the coral-fringed shoreline or borrow footwear from the resort to safely walk along the water`s edge. Those seeking lavish comfort and seclusion will appreciate the spacious suites and individual pools, though the hotel sits on a pleasant if unexceptional stretch of sand and others offer superior beach access or surroundings.

29. Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa – Bophut

a large swimming pool with a large window Pastoral and picturesque, bamboo barriers part to unveil a lobby laden with lounging locals and lively koi. Villas embrace gardens directly on the sand, like the Lush Lairs lavishly lit and layered with artifacts, and higher-end habitats more crafted while compact counterparts remain flawless. Found at a cove`s conclusion where a creek calls, the intimate inlet harbors hammocks and rustling rubber trees all its own, just brief walks from additional eateries albeit a quarter-hour ramble down the sands places you in the pulsating heart of it all. Other highlights include a yoga yard, games garage, and learning lounge situated in thatched huts.

30. Weekender Resort – Lamai

a beach with palm trees and a pool of water Practical yet affordable, this new coastal resort offers a range of well-appointed lodgings situated densely on a limited plot. Budget-oriented basic rooms present modern design aspects and comfortable fittings, lacking perspective however. Superior rooms allow more spaciousness including a decent-sized terracotta balcony with a vista of the swimming pool, with additional color contrast. A single block of merely ten seaside-facing rooms presents immediate and uninterrupted perspectives over the water. Contemporary Thai-inspired villas are individually arranged but within close proximity of around five to ten meters often facing opposite a neighboring villa just across the path. Others offer more seclusion together with private swimming pools. The primary pool looks out toward the commonly busy yet shady beach, as the resort is midway along Lamai shore. Nearby cafes also dot the smattered beach.

Where to Stay in Koh Samui?

  • My 3 favorite beaches on Koh Samui that I enjoy visiting are Chaweng, Bophut, and Choeng Mon.
  • The finest beaches on Samui are located along the stretch of coast from Mae Nam (in the north) around the northeastern corner of the island and down the eastern coast to Lamai. The southern coast and western coast beaches are good for solitude and quietness but contain rocks and can transform into mudflats during low tide.
  • Many beaches on Samui have quite shallow water in places from late April to late May making swimming difficult. Beaches farther west tend to have this issue more. Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon, and Bophut beaches usually do not have as much of a problem.
  • Best nightlife on Koh Samui: Chaweng (dancing, beach gatherings), Bophut (trendy pubs, wine bars)
  • The best restaurants on Koh Samui are in Chaweng or Bophut.
  • The best budget choice or long-term accommodation: Mae Nam
  • Best for families: Choeng Mon, Chaweng, Bophut.
  • Bophut Hotels – One of my favorite beaches on Koh Samui. The sand along this shore tends to be coarser than areas further south although it softens as distance from Fisherman’s Village grows. Still, the natural scenery remains quite pleasant, the atmosphere relaxed, and water conditions suitable for swimming. A variety of boutique lodgings and upscale resorts are situated right on the beach. Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village consists of a casual collection of shops, eateries, and bars to explore. Recommended Hotels: Hansar (fashionable luxury) • Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort (resort luxury) • Zazen (boutique) • Peace Resort (moderate) • Smile House (moderate)
  • Mae Nam Hotels – This beach side area located on the northwestern coast is presently quite popular among budget travelers from overseas who take extended vacations as well as locals who have lived abroad for some time. Mae Nam boasts a pleasant shore that is suitable for swimming (despite the sea occasionally becoming somewhat turbulent as it lacks the shelter of nearby Bophut, Chaweng, or Choeng Mon). The region offers a variety of casual yet enjoyable places to dine both on the sand and closer to the roads away from the oceanfront. Mae Nam is favored by long-term visitors who lease living quarters for a few months (check with the cafes or restaurants around town if searching for a home rental). Suggested Accommodations: W Koh Samui (luxury) • Samui Buri Beach Resort (luxury) • Coco Palm Beach Resort (moderate – great for families) • Harry’s Bungalows (budget)
  • Chaweng Beaches – This is considered the best beach on Koh Samui though it may not suit everyone. It’s busy and has somewhat of a lively atmosphere (though certainly not overly rowdy), and has the most street vendors of any beach on the island. The beach in Chaweng stretches for around 7km and can roughly be separated into 3 areas:
  • North Chaweng – The shoreline is more of a lagoon and at low tide is very shallow and rocky. It’s tranquil here and it’s where you’ll find a few of the low-cost accommodations in Chaweng – alongside some high end resorts. It’s a brief walk along the shoreline to nicer sand, more restaurants, and central Chaweng. Recommended Hotels: Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort (lavish) • Amari Koh Samui (lavish, just renovated) • Briza Beach Resort (lavish) Nora Chaweng (budget)
  • Central Chaweng – A busy and entertaining region. I’d still consider it acceptable for families (until 10pm at least) but do not expect peace and quiet. Eateries spill onto the beach and as daylight dims tables appear on the sand for meals and the music increases a couple notches. The beach is quite pleasant here. Recommended Inns: The Library (upscale/boutique) – Baan Chaweng (moderate) – Ark Bar (budget)
  • South Chaweng – The most pleasant stretch of beach in Chaweng with fine sand. The only downfall is that come evening the beach restaurants here feel rather dull (like you’re dining at an all inclusive in Honolulu) – but the livelier, hipper eateries of central Chaweng are only a 10 to 15 minute walk along the shore. Recommended Hotel: Anavana Beach Resort (luxury – boutique hotel)
  • Accommodations known as Chaweng Noi Hotels are found south of Chaweng beach on a sheltered cove. Only 5 or 6 resorts and 2 or 3 dining spots can be discovered in this quiet but near perfect location for those wanting to avoid Chaweng`s busyness. The sand and protected calm waters surrounded by a reef rendering it ideal for children are some highlights. Getting to the central Chaweng shops and eateries necessitates a lengthy walk of over 30 minutes, but taxis can transport one to the main strip in under 10 minutes. The recommended hotel is the Vana Belle which is a magnificent luxury property.
  • Lamai Hotels – Similar to Chaweng and Bophut, Lamai has good swimming throughout the year. The sand is somewhat coarser than Chaweng but the beach is quieter and doesn`t have as many vendors. Recommended Hotels: Banyan Tree (luxury) – Zara Beach Resort (moderate) – Pavilion (boutique) – Rocky’s Boutique Resort (boutique, south of Lamai) – Samui Jasmine (moderate, very nice) – Lamai Wanta (budget)
  • Choeng Mon Beach Resorts – Many visitors believe this beach delivers Samui`s top scenic views. It presents a lovely curving stretch of soft sand and calm currents. Restaurants and resorts line the shoreline while maintaining a more sedate atmosphere than Chaweng, Lamai, or even Bophut. The location suits families well due to shallow, placid waters, so long as the limited dining variety proves acceptable. Taxi trips of around 10 minutes will access Chaweng`s or Bophut`s Fisherman`s Village for diversified meals or nightlife if preferred. Recommended Resorts: Sala Samui Choengmon Beach Resort (luxury) • White House Beach Resort and Spa (moderate)
  • Bangrak (Big Buddha) Beach – Not an ideal beach but it provides decent budget lodging choices, a satisfactory beach area, is conveniently situated close to the airport, and is the simplest spot to catch a boat to Koh Pha Ngan (planned departures 4 times daily). Koh Faan island, with its massive seated Buddha, is just offshore making it worth a visit.
  • Emerald Cove and Lipa Noi – These 2 beaches are the nicest on the western coastline of Samui. Both become unswimmable during low tide stage but if you’re truly seeking to get away from the crowds they’re good selections and have some highly budget-friendly lodgings (and stunning 5 star resorts).
