Why is Rhodes great for families?

Steeped in history and blessed with some of Greece’s finest beaches (and lodging and dining establishments), Rhodes is nearly the perfect location for a family vacation. The large number of visitors can overwhelm some of the most popular sites but Rhodes is one of the more expansive Greek islands and finding a tranquil coastline or quiet village town is always a day trip away. The beaches are wonderful and most are very youth-friendly.

What are the best attractions for families in Crete?

Rhodes (Rhodos) Town
The medieval Old Quarter in Rhodes Town is one of the most preserved from that time in the Mediterranean and many kids will take pleasure in wandering its cobbled lanes and alleys. While not among the island`s better beaches, the town shore allows for a nice swim after exploring attractions. Dotted with charming and atmospheric lodgings that most children will find thrilling, the Jewish Quarter provides an enchanting experience. A fun energetic activity is walking along the sand to Ixia beach, about 3 or 4 miles down the coast, then taxiing back.

Faliraki WaterPark
Awesome waterpark with some crazy slides (and some tamer ones). Free bus from Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes Town. 20 euros for adults, 15 euros for 3 to 12 year olds, free for under 3. Decent restaurant on site.

Marine life exhibition, Rhodes Town
This fun yet simple aquarium is located a short distance from the old town. If you’re looking for an activity that’s a break from the sun this should keep the children entertained for an afternoon.

Lindos
The walking-only village of Lindos with the Acropolis towering above makes for an enchanting destination for children. It`s best to arrive early to avoid crowds and midday heat. Climbing from the village to the Acropolis is no simple feat. A gently sheltered beach lies at the foundation of the Acropolis.

Petaloudes, the valley teeming with butterflies.
From June to September the valley swarms with butterflies (truthfully they’re Jersey Tiger Moths) and offers an enchanting respite from the heat of the coasts. Arrive early as it is very popular with tour groups – particularly in the peak season of July and August.

What are the best beaches for families in Rhodes?

The finest beaches run along the eastern coastline of Rhodes from Rhodes Town south until just past Lindos.

Rhodes Town has several beaches near including the excellent Elli beach just north of Mandraki Harbor. South from Rhodes Town the best beaches are Ialissos, Kathara, Faliraki, Kalathos, Lindos, Katsouni, Kiotari, Glystra, and Genadi. After Genadi comes Prasonisi beach which is renowned for its surfing.

The western coast gradually becomes more barren and windy as you relocate south, although the shore at Ixia (5km southwest of Rhodes Town) is pleasant and is the center for wind sports on the island (several businesses rent windsurfing equipment).

St. Paul’s Bay
Spend a day on Bainbridge Island – It’s a short ferry ride from downtown Seattle, and a ideal day trip for families. Here’s why you want to go:

Vlicha Beach

If the town beaches of Rhodes and Lindos are too crowded, this presents a good alternative. A gradually sloping shoreline makes for a family-friendly destination for children seeking some water fun.

Faliraki
This former popular holiday spot has become more relaxed over the years making its pleasant shallow calm beach a good choice for families with young children. The nearby water park and in-town bowling alley add to the appeal.

Tsambika Beach
A quiet resort with a few restaurants and a mini market. If Faliraki is too busy for you the calm shallow waters of this beach, situated in a sheltered cove, may make an appealing alternative.

When’s the best time to visit Rhodes?

June and September offer the best months for a beach and sun vacation. The weather conditions are optimal, the water temperature is warm (somewhat warmer in September than June, but both months are suitable for swimming), the crowds are thinner than the summer months, and the hotels are a little more affordable.

Throughout July and mid August the weather tends to be warm and bright with comfortable sea temperatures. However, it is common for crowds of visitors to flock to popular attractions during these summer months. While prices are higher than usual this time of year, hotels require advanced booking. While large sites will be busy, with effort a peaceful beach can still be discovered. Despite crowds, those who visit in July or August should not feel discouraged to enjoy what summer has to offer in Greece.

April, May, October, and early November are great if you’re willing to deal with some overcast days, a little rain, and cool evenings. The spring is particularly good for hiking and cycling while May and October can still see fine beach weather. There are fewer tourists during this time of year and you can almost have top sights all to yourself. Lodgings are much cheaper too but many establishments close down from November until Easter.
