Archaeological Museum in Fira
The new Archaeological Museum opened its openings in 2018 and is based in central Fira, near to the cable vehicle, bus station, and Catholic Cathedral. The initial building, built in 1902 by a French archaeologist who dedicated much of their professional career exploring Santorini’s Cycladic culture and its Ancient Minoan civilization, was destroyed in the 1956 earthquake and rebuilt in 1960 by the Ministry of Public Works.
This museum showcases sculptures and inscriptions dating from the Archaic to Roman time periods, along with pots and clay figurines from the Geometric to Hellenistic eras, as well as some Minoan and Byzantine works of art. Descriptions are provided only in Greek and French. Most of the exhibits were uncovered during excavations on Mesa Vouno Mountain and a cemetery in ancient Thera. Many items from these digs are also displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. While not as impressive as the exhibits at the nearby Museum of Prehistoric Thera, this small museum is worth a visit.
