Mamta Villa in Tonga

The Mamta Villa is praised for its peacefulness and suitability for extended vacations, though its remote location.”

This understated collection of rooms and villas faces the sea not far from the main road in Nuku`alofa. The living quarters are arranged in a motel-style block, and the contemporary layout and decor is more pleasing than the outside suggests. Views may be limited, however, as most windows look onto another building, so obtaining a room on the second level facing the front is preferable. Even better is the scattering of independent and self-contained villas at the rear facing a pond of water lilies. Surprisingly large is the pool, and the Little India restaurant facing the pond serves excellent cuisine. But it’s the tranquil setting that’s key: with parks and a creek alongside, and a seaside walking trail across the road leading into town. Isolation is a downside, however, so those with their own vehicles will find it most suitable, as public transport infrequently passes by.

Mamta Villa – The Basics

  • Location: Along Vuna Road, the western esplanade, in the capital, Nuku’alofa on the main island. About 2.5km from downtown and 40 minutes from the airport.
  • Guests: Caters for budget-conscious travelers, especially those with their own transportation, while the villas accommodate anyone on longer stays.
  • Beach: The shore across the street is unusable for swimming or even strolling. The nearest workable shore is at Ha’atafu, on the far western tip, around 19km away.
  • Views: Accommodations face the pond, while only a few rooms overlook the sea about 100m away. However, most rooms do not have noteworthy views.
  • Wi-Fi: Free for all guests. But maybe for only 1 hour every day, so check with management.
  • Parking: Plenty of free secure parking is available.
  • How to Book: Reservations site will have the most competitive rates.
  • Phone: (676) 22 181
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Website: n/a

  • Spa & Physical Fitness Area: Not expected or provided at this low-key hotel.
  • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: None.

  • Breakfast: Included for all rates.
  • Room Service: Not anticipated or offered in this sort of low-key hotel.

Mamta Villa – Rooms

  • Room Categories: Standard Double Room – Deluxe King Room – Self-Contained Villa
  • Smoking Areas: No smoking in the rooms or public spaces, but permitted in the gardens.
  • Best Room: The spacious Self-Contained Villas facing the pond are isolated, providing more seclusion and privacy.

Mamta Villa – What’s Nearby?

Best Nearby Restaurants & Bars

  • Black Pearl Restaurant – This restaurant claims to have the ‘best steaks in Tonga’. The colonial-style setting provides a pleasant atmosphere, and the balcony is ideal for taking advantage of breezes and views. It is only 150 meters further up the esplanade, located within The Black Pearl Suites hotel.
  • The notable Little Italy Restaurant – Understandably renowned for pasta, steaks and seafood meals, along with the extensive wine list and delectable desserts. Situated about 1 km along the esplanade towards the city center, in the hotel of the same name.

Otherwise, walk (but not at night), or get a taxi, into downtown (2.5 km) and try:

  • Friends Café – Quite popular for delectable meals and excellent Wi-Fi. Claims to offer `the best coffee in town`. Conveniently located on a corner of the primary street, Taufa’ahau Road.
  • Marco’s Pizza Pasta – Also serving fish, grills, salads and tasty desserts. Relaxed garden setting and live music on weekends. Difficult to locate on a side street (Unga Road) 2 blocks southeast of Friends.
  • Enjoy Cafe – With a welcoming atmosphere and known for its pastries, coffee selections, all-day breakfast options as well as more substantial dishes, this cafe is located down a backstreet one block south of Taufa’ahau Road in Railway Road.

Nearby Market or Grocery

The property lacks surrounding attractions, so exploring the town is recommended.

Local Transport

Only sporadically do shared public transports travel so far up the esplanade. Otherwise, private taxis arranged through the hotel offer door-to-door service without meters.
