4 Best Neighborhoodsto Stay in Winnipeg

Though there are many neighborhoods in Winnipeg to choose from, in my opinion, these are the four best Winnipeg neighborhoods for travelers:

Winnipeg Neighborhood #1 – The Exchange District

a mural painted on the side of a building

Consisting of 30 blocks of locally-owned restaurants, boutiques, museums, theaters, and galleries, the Exchange District is the perfect place to stay in Winnipeg if you’re keen on some quirky culture and want to be in the thick of it.

Located just north of Downtown, the Exchange is a National Historic Site and consists of beautifully-preserved heritage buildings that are splashed with murals and advertisements from days gone by.

Especially for foodies – there are so many top-notch culinary experiences to have in this area of the city. I recommend doing some research on the best restaurants in this area and making a bit of a food tour out of it.

You won’t be disappointed.

The Exchange is also home to Winnipeg’s Fringe Theatre Festival and the International Jazz Festival. So, if you plan on attending either of these, stay close and don’t hesitate to spend a night here!

Neighborhood #2 – Downtown

a large building with a clock on top of it

Whether you’re visiting Winnipeg for business or pleasure, if you want to be close to all the action and check out some major hot spots in the process, then I recommend staying right downtown.

You’ll find tons of great restaurants, cocktail bars, and museums downtown, as well as the Bell MTS Arena, the Burton Cummings Theatre, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Children’s Museum, the Forks, and the Manitoba Museum.

There’s also some pretty prime shopping downtown, and it’s a great launching pad from which to check out the other neighborhoods.

Neighborhood #3 – Fort Garry

a large building with a clock on top

If you’re looking for a laid-back trip to Winnipeg and you want your stay to feel more like a retreat than just basic lodging, then Fort Garry is the neighborhood for you.

Located in the south end of the city near the University, Fort Garry is home to the renowned Thermea Spa, a few golf courses, the Black Hole Theatre Company, and lush St. Vital Park.

It’s also where you’ll find Investors Group Field – the premier sports stadium in the city. So if you’re in town for a major league football game or a bigtime concert, then Fort Garry is the place.

Neighborhood #4 – Central St. Boniface

a large stone building with a clock on it

Founded in 1818, St. Boniface is one of Winnipeg’s oldest neighborhoods and is known for being home to one of the largest French communities in the Canadian Prairies.

Located right across the pedestrian bridge from the Forks, St. Boniface is chock-full of francophone culture, and as such you’ll find a lot of French-themed shops, cafes, and boutiques along its main street, Le Boulevard Provencher.

St. Boniface is also home to The Cathedrale de Saint Boniface – one of Winnipeg’s most popular tourist sites.

What About Hostels in Winnipeg?

a city at night with a large body of water

Believe it or not, there are no defined “hostels” in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

There is one dorm house, but quite frankly it’s not located in the best area of town and I hesitate to guide you there.

Instead, if traveling on a budget I suggest checking out our top budget hotels: Assiniboine Gordon Inn on the Park or the Queen Bee Hotel.

While Winnipeg is largely a safe place to visit, like any city there are some areas to steer clear of (in general, the area just north of Portage is a no-go, but I highly recommend you do your own research on this, as it’s a vast generalization).

That said, if you’re backpacking through Winnipeg and are looking to meet fellow travelers, I suggest looking on Meetup.com or Airbnb Experiences – there are groups and activities on those sites for almost every taste.

If you are looking for non-hotel accommodation, there are tons of Airbnb options in Winnipeg, and booking an apartment is an excellent alternative to staying at a hotel.

Many travelers choose Airbnb instead of hotels when they need a little extra space for families or large groups, require a kitchen, or just want to cut down on costs.
