It may not be one of Europeโ€™s largest countries, but there are still a lot of unique places in Portugal. Its cities, in particular, are beautiful and filled with historic streets, amazing restaurants, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and breathtaking beaches.

When I visited Portugal, I was amazed at the difference in activities and vibes across its cities, even though the country is only five hours from top to bottom. Many of the most incredible cities donโ€™t even pop up on guides, but Iโ€™m here to give you insider knowledge.

Lisbon is easily the most iconic Portuguese city โ€“ it is the largest city in the country and Portugalโ€™s capital, after all. Lisbon has an international airport and the bustling city is a staple on any Portugal itinerary.

There are a wealth of things to do in Lisbon. You could visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site such as Belem Tower or Jerรณnimos Monastery or spend time at the cityโ€™s array of museums, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum or the National Coach Museum.

Sintra is a mountain city thatโ€™s one of the best day trips from Lisbonas itโ€™s only 30 minutes away from the capital city. Although itโ€™s close by, itโ€™s a completely different vibe than Lisbon with its vast green landscapes and the litany of castles to visit.ย

Coimbra is a major university city in central Portugal thatโ€™s home to one of the oldest educational institutions in the world. The University of Coimbra has been teaching the minds of tomorrow for 733 years and counting. There are quite a lot of things to do in Coimbra, too.ย
