Travel Insurance

a sign on the side of a building

Portugal is a relatively safe nation and whether travel insurance belongs on your Portugal packing list is ultimately a personal choice only you can make.

I still personally opt to obtain trip insurance even in a protected nation like Portugal. World Nomads has been my private elect when it relates to insurance for touring, and I privately do not assemble for Portugal devoid of it.

International Charging Adapter

a blue and white alarm clock sitting on top of a table

You won’t truly think about adding an international charging adapter to your Portugal packing list until you fail to bring it. Once that occurs, it can be a series of irritating circumstances thereafter.

I always take my universal charging device on every overseas trip. It functions regardless of location so it’ll be a staple in your bag.

Small Day Pack

a red piece of luggage sitting on top of a table

Whether you’re investing a day at the seaside or uncovering the mountainous wine country, your little day pack will be a core piece of every trek in Portugal. When you’re traveling, it’s pleasant to have a bag that’s larger than a handbag but smaller than your main backpack.

Fortunately, Osprey also carries day packs designed for convenience like the high-quality Arcane small day pack. Its simple layout is stylish yet practical. It includes a laptop sleeve and a self-locking security mechanism as a theft deterrent.

Packing Cubes

a series of photos showing different types of ties

Packing cubes have completely transformed the way I travel. They save space and effortlessly organize all my belongings. However, not all packing cubes are made the same. Trust me, I`ve had a cube or two fail at the worst possible time, but I know I can always rely on these well-traveled compression packing cubes. They’re exceedingly durable and compress down to nearly flat.

Dry Shampoo

a bottle of soap sitting on top of a table

Dry shampoo is a total life-saver when you need to refresh your hair but don’t want to take a whole shower. Just a spray or two and you’re grease-free for another few hours.

The dry shampoo I prefer the most currently available is the Amika perk-up dry shampoo. It does not leave behind that nasty, pasty residue that many dry shampoos can.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

a blue bag sitting on top of a blue surface

Whether you lodge in an , many places in Portugal will specify that their towels shouldn`t be taken to the beach. Then, what options do you have? Purchase a large beach towel and haul it around, or go without one altogether?

My suggestion is that you bring along a lightweight, compact Rainleaf microfiber towel. Rainleaf towels dry very quickly after use and come with a small bag making it very easy to pack.

Travel Backpack

a black bag sitting on top of a black surface

Without a quality traveling backpack, then everything else on your Portugal packing list can fall apart. Literally! If you want the highest quality option, I cannot recommend the Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Pack enough.

I brought it along to four continents so far and it’s endured heavy usage. Yet, it still holds up and remains my favorite backpack of all time after owning various others (for more details, see my Farpoint review).

And Osprey`s unconditional pledge to fix or replace any damage or defect at no cost for any reason provides insurance coverage that good can`t be found elsewhere!

Filtered Water Bottle

a blue and white water bottle sitting on top of a white table

The reputable Brita water bottle eliminates uncertainty around staying hydrated when spending extensive time amid the heat of Portugal.

Possessing a filtered water bottle on your Portugal packing listing will occur useful on a everyday basis. You’ll be thirsty all the time in Portugal’s relaxed weather and you’ll want clean water on hand all the time.

Enter: the Brita sealed filtered drinking container. You likely currently know the title as it`s among the top filtration brand names globally.

Dry Bag

a blue bag sitting on top of a blue table

If spending time near water bodies during your Portugal visit (and you surely will), this MARCHWAY dry bag safely stores all valuables. It also floats if accidentally dropped in the water.

Portugal’s seaside regions are perfect for endless days of relaxation. However, that chill vibe can quickly deteriorate if one`s electronics or valuables gets destroyed by water.

To err on the side of caution, do not overlook bringing a MARCHWAY waterproof dry bag when packing for Portugal. It even floats, allowing one to bring along a camera or phone on boat outings.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Best pricing of the year
Traveling to Portugal need not involve security concerns online when employing ExpressVPN.

No matter where in the world you are, it`s possible to become one of the many affected by cybercrime. That is, unless you safeguard your internet activities with a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

While there are numerous options available, I would propose Express VPN. It provides simple usage across multiple devices and has reasonable pricing.

Toiletry Bag

a blue suitcase sitting on top of a white counter

The Narwey toiletry bag comes in many styles ranging from simple to eccentric designs. Its variety of compartments makes it effortless to organize all your bathroom items.

It’s always good to have a light source around. The Eveready LED Flashlight is compactly sized and will effortlessly fit into a bag or pocket. It’s also very sturdy and effective with a bright white LED light. Before leaving your hotel, use it to ensure you didn’t misplace anything under furniture or hidden away.

Portable Power Bank

a black and white photo of a cell phone

During those lengthy days exploring Portugal, you’ll be pleased you brought along this portable charging device that can power four distinct gadgets simultaneously.

People who travel and also appreciate coffee will enjoy items that allow them to consume a pleasant cup of coffee every morning. This portable coffee makermeasures under 7 inches, weighs less than a pound, and will be one of the traveler`s favorite gifts this holiday season.

A transportable power bank is another item that will particularly assist on those beach days in Portugal when an outlet may not be readily accessible. When you’re touring in an unfamiliar nation and don’t comprehend the layout, it’s even more essential that your devices are energized.

I’m a big admirer of the RGVOTA portable charger for traveling. It possesses a smart LCD display that indicates precisely how much battery percentage remains in the power bank. You’ll never be taken aback by a depleted portable charger.

Noise Canceling Headphones

a black and white photo of a speaker

Generally, Portugal has a more restful environment. However, in major urban areas similar to Lisbon, ambient noises from the streets can permeate lodgings. Thankfully, with these Anker soundcore noise-canceling headphones, you can selectively be part of the activity only when preferred.

Journal

Forgetting the specifics of a memorable trip is easier than you may think. The best approach to retain the recollections of your journey to Portugal forever is by maintaining a travel diary. Simply writing for five to ten minutes daily will leave you with a priceless souvenir.

However, remaining light is still preferable, so this classic notebook brand is preferable. It retains a compact size and comes in various designs.

Travel Speaker

Situated on the eastern side of the harbor facing Downtown Halifax, Dartmouth is a vibrant community featuring cozy cafes, top-quality restaurants, indie shops, and a handful of historic properties to explore. Staying here provides a more intimate experience than the city center, with easy access to some of the highest rated bars and eateries in Nova Scotia (including Canteen on Portland). In terms of sights, there’s historic Evergreen House and Quaker House, plus the grassy expanse of Dartmouth Commons with fine views across the harbor. The 10-minute boat ride to get here offers the best views of Downtown Halifax itself. Hotels in Dartmouth tend to be newer and a little better value than in central Halifax.

When I was traveling in Portugal before, I frequently observed others enjoying musical performances on the beach using small movable speakers and I was rather envious! Learn from my past mistake and include one of these convenient Tribit portable speakers on your packing list. It is completely waterproof, provides surprisingly powerful bass, and can simply strap to your backpack strap.

Passport & ID Carrier

a black piece of luggage sitting on top of a table

Minimizing passport damage as much as feasible during time in Portugal is desired. Thus I carry ID, passport, and important travel documents in a charming holder.

Such as this fashionable leather wallet like PASCACOO passport holder wallet. I appreciate the variety of color options they provide and it even comes with a one-year guarantee.

Tablet

a toothbrush shaped like a cat on top of a table

Handheld computers are highly beneficial when traveling throughout Portugal, or any location really. Essentially, they function as a portable laptop.

Whether one wishes to read books, watch films, or work, an Apple iPad mini has one covered. Renowned for its feather-weight design, this version of the iPad is positively suited for international travel.

First Aid Kit

a red suitcase with a red sticker on it

If you’re reading a packing list written by me, you’ll almost always end up seeing this particular item mentioned. First aid kits are simply essential for any type of trip, but especially one like Portugal where you’ll likely be spending a lot of time outside. The Evantek first aid kit works well for a vacation as it’s small enough to place in your bag and disregard until needed.

Wrinkle Release Spray

No matter how diligent you try, it’s practically impossible to maintain your clothes nicely pressed when packing them into a backpack. That’s why I was astounded when I discovered this Downy Wrinkle release spray. It sounds too good to be accurate, but it functions. All you have to do is spray the wrinkled fabric, flatten it out, and it looks like it’s been freshly pressed.

Compact Umbrella

Those imagining a trip with solely sunny skies should be aware there is a high likelihood of encountering one or more storms if visiting during the rainy season from November through March.

Clothing to Pack for Portugal

Packing for Portugal isn’t as direct as your ordinary list of items to bring to the beach. Based on where and when you travel, and what you do, your wardrobe prerequisites will vary greatly. The styles of dress in Portugal range from relaxed to formal, so it’s important to consider what clothing to wear in Portugal.

So what clothing should you pack for Portugal? Here is a brief clothing checklist for Portugal:

  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 2 light sundresses
  • 1 flowy skirt
  • 3-5 casual shirts or t-shirtsΒ

A few shirts having a plain and standard design can go quite a distance on your journey to Portugal. You most likely will require approximately three well-constructed shirts for an average duration trip to Portugal. Like a pack of these Amazon Essentials women’s crewnecks and Gildan men’s crew t-shirts.

Beach Coverup

When planning beach trips to places like Portugal, I don`t enjoy spending time thinking about what to wear. Therefore, I consistently bring along a light and cozy beach cover-up like the Blooming Jelly swimsuit coverup. This helps because it keeps me comfortable yet lets me dress appropriately for dining out as well.

Water Shoes

If there is one destination where water shoes can be helpful, it’s Portugal. They are simply needed to make the most of the country’s expansive beaches.

Luckily, these watersports shoes work for both males and females. These water footwear feature a basic style and are available at an extremely affordable cost. Not to mention that they`re simple to pack away in a bag, making them a great addition to your Portugal packing requirements.

Sundress

Summer temperatures in Portugal are quite intolerable. You`ll be perspiring from the instant you step outside. When I was in Portugal over the hot season, I practically existed in light attire similar to this lightweight cotton casual summer outfit. Plus, it`s advantageous to not worry about matching individual items of attire together.

Portugal Packing Tips

Consider The Season You’re Visiting

Portugal changes drastically with the seasons. When deciding on the optimal time to visit Portugal for you, it’s also important to consider how that will affect your packing list.

You’ll need warmer garments and rain gear during the winter months after October. However, warm clothes won’t be necessary at all in the intense heat of summer when you’ll need very light, comfortable attire for exploring Portugal.

Use A Large Travel Backpack Instead Of Rolling Suitcases

I’m a strong advocate for relying on a sizable travel backpack rather than the more standard alternative of rolling luggage. Standard suitcases are just too cumbersome. Even without wheels, high-quality hiking packs are easier to transport around and organize.

See our guide to the ideal baggage for travel for inspiration. Or, if you’re truly dedicated to a suitcase, we also have a write-up of the best carry-on bags.

Wear Bulky Clothes For The Flight

Efficiency of packing light for your Portugal trip has likely been emphasized often. One effective method is using the flight transit for any bulky layers needed, as airplane cabins tend to be quite frigid. This dual purpose approach tackles two challenges at once.

Buy Liquid Toiletries In Portugal

Portugal isn’t one of those distant destinations where essential toiletries or necessities won’t be readily accessible. There are well-stocked pharmacies, shops, and grocery stores all throughout the area. Rather than risking a container rupturing in your baggage, you can constantly just procure your liquid toiletries once you arrive in the country.

There Are Plenty Of Laundromats In Portugal

If you’re a long-term traveler, then you won’t have to worry about doing your laundry in Portugal. Many accommodations provide washing machines and drying lines. Even if they don’t, though, there are laundromats readily available. Even in smaller towns.

Look Up Luggage Restrictions Ahead Of Time

Having your bag rejected by the airline due to size restrictions can put a damper on plans for a Portugal vacation. To completely avoid this scenario, search your airline`s baggage policies in advance.
