Famous for beaches and infamous for nightlife, Mykonos is one of the most frequented islands in Greece (along with Santorini and Crete). This small island with an significant personality is home to lavish hotels, refined culinary experiences, luxury shopping, golden shorelines, and wild nightclubs. Though the cosmopolitan side of Mykonos gets the most acclaim, there are plenty of ancient, traditional, and distant outposts waiting for inquisitive travelers to uncover. The archaeological treasures of ancient Delos are a short boat ride away, while Mykonos Town has the whitewashed 15th-century Church of Panagia Paraportiani (made up of five interconnected churches), and traditional Ano Mera village is home to the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani and attached ecclesiastical museum.

Most of the activities on Mykonos take place along the western and southern coasts around Mykonos Town, Ornos Beach, and Platis Gialos Beach. These locations are among the most visited areas for travelers seeking lodging, though quality hotels in Mykonos and interesting things to experience can be found across the entire island. As one ventures farther east and north, development decreases as hotels, beach clubs, and shops decrease replaced by rugged landscapes, a few farms, and secluded sandy beaches (often hidden by rocky outcroppings).

The visitors who come to Mykonos island face a significant decision about whether to remain in Mykonos Town or perhaps explore one of the globally renowned beaches surrounding the island. Buses run frequently including late at night between Mykonos Town and the top beaches, specifically Platis Gialos and Ornos, and water taxis link the southern coast beaches, therefore it’s easy to stay in a single place yet enjoy close by areas, even for people visiting without a vehicle. I prefer to stay in Mykonos Town and travel to the beaches during daylight hours. Then return to the town in the later afternoon and take pleasure in the evening when Mykonos Town really comes alive. Mykonos Town, also referred to as Chora, has the most nightlife, dining establishments, and shopping of anywhere on the island. This compact, walkable village is the historic capital and largest town of the island, buzzing with activity especially at night. The landmark windmills sit just outside the charming Little Venice neighborhood not far from the Old Port, lined with seafood eateries. There is also a small beach at the Old Port with a lifeguard. South of the village center is Megali Ammos Beach, frequently windy but with remarkable sunset perspectives toward Baos Island, an old pirate hideout.

Mykonos Town has the most luxury hotels but there are many highly rated 4-star and 5-star resorts at the beach towns situated around the island. The finest stretches of sand in Mykonos are generally along the south coast, protected from the meltemi, the strong, dry northernly wind that blows all day in the summer (Mykonos is renowned as The Isle of the Winds). The majority of these beaches are connected by an aquatic taxi route that runs from hectic Ornos in the west to serene Elia in the east. Ornos is one of the most accommodating beaches for families and wonderful for swimming. Platis Gialos is considered by many as Mykonos` finest beach: a wide expanse of sand lined with casual eateries, deluxe hotels, and aquatic activities rentals. Nestled between Ornos and Platis Gialos (but not on the aquatic taxi route) is Psarou Beach, situated in a small cove sheltered from the wind with calm waters, lavish resorts, an upscale beach club, and a designer shopping center. This locality may be one of the most expensive regions to spend your time on the island.

Farther east along the water transportation route, you’ll find the well known celebration beaches of Paraga,Paradise, and Super Paradise as well as the more relaxed, remote beaches of Agrari and Elia. East of Elia is the new trending place, Kalo Livadi Beach, where a large number of high-end hotels and upscale beach clubs have appeared in recent years. Like Psarou, Kalo Livadi Beach is not on the water transportation route. To get there, you’ll have to go through the traditional village of Ano Mera, renowned for its quaint central square and 16th-century Tourliani Monastery.

South of Mykonos Town and west of Ornos Beach lies the rugged, romantic Aleomandra Peninsula and Agios Ioannis Beach, a quiet, small beach with gorgeous sunset sea views. North of Mykonos Town, also with stunning sunsets, are Tourlos (the New Port and marina area with luxury hotels and easy reach to Chora) and Agios Stefanos Beach (golden sand and casual taverns). On the north coast, but tucked inside the bay is the beach settlement of Panormos (a wide swathe of sand, mostly open but with one stylish beach club), which lies near near rugged Agios Sostis (a natural, pristine beach – home to beloved Kiki’s Tavern).

  • Best Places in Mykonos to Stay for First-Timers: Mykonos Town
Visitors usually lodge within Mykonos Town, otherwise known as Chora, which is home to the scenic Old Port, the iconic windmills, the charming Little Venice district, and the historic Kastro neighborhood. An elaborate maze of streets that were meticulously arranged centuries ago to deter pirate attacks houses eateries, shops, and attractions that are densely packed within this area. Cubic white structures with multicolored staircases and balconies line the narrow, pedestrian roadways of flagstones outlined in whitewash. Notable locations to visit in Chora incorporate a open-air cinema, museums focused on archaeology and folklore, and the 15th-century Panagia Paraportiani, a complex comprising five interconnected churches. Strolling along the scenic Old Port allows one to take among the many boats to the nearby island of Delos, an extremely significant sacred site from ancient Greece. There is also a small beach at the Old Port, but superior beaches like Platis Gialos, Ornos and Psarou that are only a brief bus ride away from one of Mykonos Town`s two bus stations. Round out the evening with a sunset cocktail in Little Venice, directly at the edge of the sea, then head into the tangle of lanes in Kasro to dine at one of the numerous tavernas. Dance the night away at one of Mykonos` legendary nightclubs – there is no “last call” and parties continue until sunrise.

    • Best Places in Mykonos for Beach: Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou, Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia, and Kalo Livadi Beaches
Dozens of heavenly beaches tucked into natural coves surround Mykonos island`s coast, but the beaches on the island’s south side generally have calmer waters as they are sheltered from the meltemi winds. The abovementioned beaches are all located on the south coast, containing golden sand, food and beverage services, and daytime beach chairs and umbrellas. All of these beaches are connected via bus to Mykonos Town, and most (except Psarou and Kalo Livadi) are also accessible by water taxi, making it easy to travel between one to another during the day. Ornos and Platis Gialos are the busiest and most family-oriented. Psarou is best for beginning swimmers and has an upscale shopping complex attached. Paradise and Super Paradise are best for parties. Elia is the quietest beach: long and expansive with great swimming and casual tavernas. Kalo Livadi offers a relaxed mix of stylish beach clubs and high-end hotels without the crowds of the beaches along the boat route.
    • Best Locations in Mykonos to Stay with Families: Ornos, Platis Gialos, and Psarou Beaches

The most family-oriented areas along the south coast in Mykonos are located at the western end, specifically Ornos, Platis Gialos, and Psarou. All three spots offer excellent sandy beaches, great swimming conditions, and numerous dining establishments open all day without the noise from parties and bars commonly found in Mykonos Town or the more adult-focused beaches. Ornos and Platis Gialos provide a variety of casual taverns, a wide selection of lodging, water taxi connections to all south coast beaches, and convenient bus access to Mykonos Town. Psarou features the calmest waters, protection from wind, upscale lodging and designer shopping venues, and bus routes to Mykonos Town though without water taxis. Both Psarou and Platis Gialos have water sport equipment rentals available.

  • Best Places in Mykonos to Stay for Nightlife and Parties: Mykonos Town, Paraga Beach, Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach
Mykonos Town is renowned for its
nightlife with many nightclubs, cocktail lounges, bars, and shops crammed into its narrow, pedestrian-only lanes, most of them open until at least 4:00 a.m., many until after sunrise. Most people enjoy a sunset beverage in Little Venice, before heading into the heart of Chora or the Old Port for dining, dancing, and some tipsy late-night shopping. Several beaches on the water taxi route are also well known for partying, with a string of beach clubs presenting sets by local and international DJs. Paraga Beach’s SantAnna and Scorpios throw some of the most lavish gatherings, while Paradise Beach’s Cavo Paradiso, Tropicana, and Paradise Beach Club tend to attract a younger, hard-partying crowd. Super Paradise is home the Super Paradise Beach Club, a long-running entertainment powerhouse, and Jackie O’, a gay-oriented beach club with nightly drag shows (their nightclub in Mykonos Town also has nightly drag shows)
  • Best Places in Mykonos to Stay for Couples/Honeymoons: Mykonos Town, Agios Ioannis Beach, Elia Beach, Kalo Livadi Beach, Panormos Beach
Pretty much all of Mykonos is perfect for honeymoons and romantic getaways, but some places especially stand out. Mykonos Town is the top spot for big celebrations with lively streets and squares, dreamy sunset views, all-night dancing, and restaurants that span from elaborate fine dining to cozy traditional tavernas. Agios Ioannis, Elia, Kalo Livadi, and Panormos are all less-crowded beaches served by luxury resorts and boutique hotels with soft sand and under-the-stars-dining options. Agios Ioannis has the best sunsets of the lot, while Elia offers the calmest waters. Kalo Livadi offers a cosmopolitan feel but avoids the crowds. Panormos is the least visited with just one beach club, while also offering easy access to pristine Agios Sostis Beach and rustic Kiki`s Tavern.
  • Most Advantageous Places in Mykonos for Sightseeing: Mykonos Town or Ano Mera
The most opportunities for sightseeing are located in Mykonos Town, where travelers will find iconic windmills, the historic Paraportiani Church, the alluring Little Venice area, and the delightful, bougainvillea-filled lanes and squares. Delos Island, the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis – among the most significant archaeological sites globally – is accessible via a short ferry ride from the village`s Old Port. Ano Mera is the last traditional village remaining in Mykonos, home to the centuries-old churches of Panagia Tourliani in the village square and the Byzantine Monastery of Paleokastro adjacent to contemporary castle ruins. Sleepy Ano Mera connects to Chora by direct bus, allowing visitors staying in one area to easily tour the other.

  • Preferred Locations in Mykonos for Brief Trips: Mykonos Town, Tourlos, Agios Stefanos Beach
If you’ve only got a couple of days on the island, Mykonos Town is the handiest spot to stay, with a wide range of lodging, dining, nightlife, and even a couple of beaches within easy walking distance. Mykonos Town is also the central bus hub of the island, making visits to all the best beaches simple to do. Tourlos is home to the New Port; most visitors to the island will arrive and depart from here. Tourlos (the port and the marina) is connected to Mykonos Town by the Sea Bus (about a 15 to 20-minute ride; runs about every half hour) or a 20-minute walk. About a 15-minute walk north from Tourlos (or a 5-minute bus ride from Mykonos Town) is Agios Stefanos Beach, a quiet, sunset-facing beach with a handful of tavernas and a few excellent hotels.

The Sea Bus connects the New Port and Old Port with routes running approximately every 30 minutes, all wheelchair accessible, and all €2 one-way per individual, while a Delos round-trip costs €20. Water vehicles also join the southern beaches, with routes connecting the main beaches at Ornos and Platis Gialos with the more remote beaches at Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise,Agrari, and Elia. An all-day, all-beach pass costs €20.

Staying at Megali Ammos Beach

a beach filled with lots of boats next to the oceana street sign with a bird on it

Situated around 500 meters south of Chora, Megali Ammos provides fine sand, sunset panoramas, and great swimming without the crowds seen in the village or southern beaches. Winds may occur here. It`s a brief walk from the village center along a route lacking sidewalks, so caution on the return trip especially after dark. The below hotels should be viewed as part of Mykonos Town but near Megali Ammos Beach.

Staying at Ornos Beach

a beach filled with lots of chairs and umbrellasa street sign with a bird on it

Just a few kilometers south of Mykonos Town lies Ornos Beach, one of the busiest beaches on the island. The streets surrounding it contain boutique hotels with dazzling sand extensively lined with sun loungers. Roughly half a dozen seafood eateries are immediately adjacent to the beach with additional options nearby. Ornos overlooks a sheltered bay (as seen here from Kivotos Luxury Boutique Hotel) where the shallow, calm waters are popular with families. If crowds become too much, a brief walk around the east side of the bay leads to the excellent Apaggio restaurant overlooking docked fishing boats, while a slightly longer stroll north takes you to Korfos Beach – more exposed and breezy on windy days (popular for kitesurfing), but much less crowded. Numerous buses service the town and beach, some continuing to Agios Ioannis Beach. Ornos also serves as the starting point for the water taxi to Elia Beach making stops in Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, and Agrari Beaches.

Staying at Platis Gialos Beach

a large swimming pool in front of a beacha street sign with a bird on it

The prime beach on Mykonos for a mix of dining establishments, relaxed evening activities, hotels, and fine sand. Platis Gialos is a 4km drive southern of Mykonos Town. It’s got something for everyone: families come here for the quiet waters and white sand; the young, trendy group heads for the hip beach bars; and everyone comes here to eat – the beachfront’s back-to-back restaurants serving everything from Greek basics and seafood to sophisticated fusion. It’s also the main water sports beach in Mykonos, with kayaking, standup paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and flyboarding on offer. Numerous hotels and villas surround the beach, including Petinos Beach Hotel (pictured above). Excellent bus links to Mykonos Town and hourly water taxis to other south coast beaches in the high season.

Staying at Agios Ioannis Beach

Studded with beach umbrellas, this narrow sandy stretch on Mykonos` western coast is a favorite place to watch sunsets. Part of the movie Shirley Valentine was filmed there, and it`s also where you`ll find a popular seafood eatery – Hippie Fish – and a couple of boutique hotels on the hillside overlooking the Aegean Sea, like Anax Resort and Spa (pictured above). Several daily buses from Mykonos follow the steep, short access path down to Agios Ioannis, turning around in the parking area near the picturesque Cycladic church by the ocean. From Agios Ioannis, it`s a 10-minute walk past the church and around the headland to the small, sheltered cove of Kapari Beach.

Staying at Agios Stefanos Beach

Positioned near the New Port at Tourlos (where the majority of Mykonos ferries arrive and depart) and approximately 3 km from the heart of Mykonos Town, Agios Stefanos is a small, sandy beach with a handful of bistros and beach clubs, like the magnificent Limnios Tavern on the hill overlooking the beach with gorgeous sunset panoramas and flavorful Greek comfort foods. This is not necessarily the most scenic beach in Mykonos, but it is ideal for swimming and sheltered from the winds. Transportation in the area is well-connected by buses to and from the airport and Mykonos Town and by the Sea Bus (water taxi) to the Old port at Mykonos Town and to Delos Island.

Staying at Psarou Beach

With its gleaming waters and continuous rows of sun loungers, Psarou Beach is one of the island’s most popular destinations. It’s a particular favorite with families and newlyweds due to its relaxed atmosphere, silky-soft sand, and enviable spot in a cove shielded from the winds. A minor center for water sports, Psarou Beach sees windsurfers and waterskiers bouncing on the waves farther from the shoreline. There are a couple excellent restaurants and hotels here, counting Mykonos Blu (foreground) and N Hotel (background), eateries, and the beach is well-served by buses from Mykonos Town.

Staying in Paradise Beach

Three distinctive clubs – Paradise Club with a lively beachside bar, Tropicana known for its vibrant all-night gatherings, and Cavo Paradiso perched atop a headland with ocean views – draw revelers to Paradise Beach. Each venue attracts renowned international DJs for events lasting until dawn at the peak of the season, when youthful sunbathers socialize on the sandy shore. During quieter periods, families claim the beach. Nearby lies the authentic Indian Palace restaurant renowned for its cuisine. Accessible via frequent shuttle from Mykonos Town centre or water taxi, the beach benefits from a variety of transportation options.

Staying at Super Paradise Beach

Exclusive villas dot the hillsides high above the sheltered cove of Super Paradise Beach, accessible by a steep narrow pathway. Super Paradise is headlined by its namesake beachfront bar and club showcased above, with the popular Jackie O venue located at the opposite end. During summer peak season, beach celebrations with international DJ performances kick off in the afternoons and last into the early morning hours. During daytime hours, the beach serves as a pleasant spot to sip a cocktail while working on a tan. Hourly shuttle buses from Mykonos Town operate late into the night throughout high season, while boat taxis provide service to the beach during the day.

Staying at Paraga Beach

a beach filled with lots of beach chairs and umbrellasa street sign with a bird on it

Located on the south coast, lively Paraga Beach bridges the backpacker party scene with a touch of elegance. This appealing sandy stretch has beach bars and a youth hostel on one end attracting beach parties in the afternoons. On the other end of the beach, on a coastal headland with excellent ocean perspectives, is Scorpios – a location for relaxed lunches under canopies during the day, an amphitheater for sunset watching, and a lounge club at night. A brief two-minute walk north across the headland leads to a couple wonderful seafood taverns and a more relaxed atmosphere on pebbly Agia Anna Beach (one of three beaches on Mykonos with that name – others are in Mykonos Town at the Old Port and south of Kalafatis Beach on the west side of the island). Buses run from Mykonos Town to Paraga in summer.

Staying in Kalo Livadi Beach

a man standing on a beach next to a body of watera street sign with a picture of a bird on it

To reach Kalo Livadi Beach requires passing through Ano Mera, situated on Greece`s southern coast. As it can be reached by coach only during peak season but not water transport, the beach avoids much of the warm weather crowds compared to other southern shorelines. A handful of upscale resorts reside on the hills above, along with a couple beach clubs and seaside eateries serving Greek staples, plus several groupings of sun loungers. Still, travelers can readily find their own patch of sand or embark on a brief southeastern walk further along the coast to uncover the tiny and lesser known Loulos Beach which provides no sunbeds or umbrellas so self-preparation is necessary. Strong winds sometimes leave Kalo Livadi Beach feeling quite exposed.

Staying at Elia Beach

people are sitting on the beach by the watera street sign with a cartoon character on it

Accessible via Ano Mera (or by boat taxi from nearby beaches during summertime), Elia Beach spans a lengthy sandy shoreline on the southern coast of Mykonos. Elia Mykonos, an adequate seafood establishment containing a bar and sunbed rentals, is the sole dining location accessible to the general public along the beach; all other restaurants lie inside the resorts. However, the lavish resorts crowning the surrounding hills all possess their private beach areas in this location. You’ll also discover a small water sports rental center providing jet skis and inflatables. While numerous sun worshippers crowd the beach, its lack of public beach bars and abundance of open space lends it a more relaxed vibe than other southern coast beaches, even during its busiest moments. A ten-minute scramble along the rocks from the western end of Elia Beach leads you to the tranquil, attractive Agrari Beach in a sheltered bay, where you’ll find a couple beach restaurants, ample deck chairs, and calm, shallow water.

Staying in Ano Mera

a building with a clock on the front of ita street sign with a picture of a bird on it

The sole different town on the island of any extent after Mykonos Town, Ano Mera rests considerably in the core of the island, achievable through an 8km generate along the island’s key roadway (not long back, this was the just roadway on the island). Ano Mera is well worth a visit for its appealing primary square, outlined with tavernas and coffee shops, and the gorgeous Tourliani Abbey (pictured above) that dates back to the sixteenth century. Beyond its whitewashed, castle-like wall, there’s a striking marble chapel filled with medieval symbols. There are great perspectives of the town and the abbey from the Paleokastro Abbey, situated on a hill just outside Ano Mera. Frequent buses connect Ano Mera with Mykonos Town. In summer, there are buses that connect Ano Mera with Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis beaches. There are very few lodgings in Ano Mera, but the town is home to one of the best, Koukoumi, the only vegan hotel in Mykonos.

Staying at Panormos Beach

a beach filled with lots of umbrellas and chairsa street sign with a cartoon character on it

One of the longest beaches in Mykonos extends along the island’s north, central coast for around half a kilometer. Known as Panormos, the beach is somewhat sheltered from strong northern winds, though breezes are typically more prevalent here than at beaches farther south. There is a superb restaurant, Kalosta, and a lively beach club, Principote, located here, but crowds of tourists are thinner than usual due to the semi-isolated position lacking regular bus transport (having a car is advisable for visiting this beach). Expect crystalline waters, fine golden sand, and ample sun. Both dining and a scattering of hotels sit at the northern end, while nudists prefer the far southern end. The photo above features the pool and view from Panormos Village.

Staying at Agios Sostis Beach

The beach on the Mykonos northern coast regarded as the most attractive, Agios Sostis is situated away in a small bay yet has a pleasant strip of white sand, shallow, gentle water, and a few beach umbrellas. It often has considerably less crowds than the southern coast beaches but can be buffeted by wind in July and August. At the northern end, high above the beach is the renowned Kiki’s Tavern; people start lining up outside it at midday for the wonderfully basic Cycladic dishes. Straight below the taverna is a small, sheltered inlet with crystal-clear water and a tiny beach. You need your own transportation to get to Agios Sostis. The turnoff for the beach is about 2km or so out of Mykonos Town off the primary road towards Ano Mera.

Staying in Aleomandra

a beach that has some umbrellas on ita street sign with a picture of a bird on it

Nicknamed for the mythical stables housing Apollo’s horses, Aleomandra refers to the small peninsula connecting Ornos and Agios Ioannis that extends southwest into the ocean. It represents the closest point in Mykonos to the sacred island of Delos. Sparsely occupied, the area is dotted with private luxurious villas as well as a handful of high-end lodgings open to guests. A few small, sandy beaches can also be found, some nameless seeing very few visitors even during peak season. Glyfadi Beach below Casa del Mar’s represents one of these nearly hidden beaches. For privacy and tranquility, this constitutes one of the supreme locations on the island, although some may feel it a tad isolated.

Staying in Kalafatis

a row of beach chairs sitting on top of a beacha sign with a picture of a bird on it

Situated most westerly in the village of Mykonos, around 8 km from Chora as the crow flies, laidback Kalafatis village is home to the only Blue Flag-awarded beach in Mykonos, Kalafatis Beach. This long, tree-lined expanse of golden sand highlights a handful of watersports centers, beach volleyball, and boat charters, though it’s most popular as a windsurfing destination, beloved for its steady breeze and consistent (yet not too aggressive) waves. Beach bed and umbrella sets are accessible from the couple of seafood tavernas perched on the sand; additional dining options are available offshore in the village. Most of the activity occurs at the north end of the beach, leaving the south side generally available for swimming, snorkeling, or simply claiming your own patch of sand under the sun. There is a lifeguard on responsibility throughout the summer season. Unpretentious, low-key, and family-friendly, Kalafatis is a breath of fresh air in an often busy, always glamorous, destination.
