Mykonos Town – Tips & Advice

  • Mykonos Town is perfect for travelers seeking access to the island’s finest nightlife, dining, and shopping. As the transportation hub of the island, the village forms a fantastic home base for exploring Mykonos’ legendary beaches and the archaeological site at Delos Island, as buses and boats depart often throughout the day and night, particularly during high season.
  • All of the most popular Mykonos beaches are a short bus ride (10 to 20 minutes) from the Mykonos Town bus stations at Fabrika (in Chora) and the Old Port.
  • Mykonos Town is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Book lodgings four to six months in advance.

Staying in Mykonos Chora

Chora is generally the name given to Mykonos Town, but in this context it refers specifically to the pedestrian-only heart of the village. The maze-like streets of Chora contain an immense concentration of superb restaurants, amazing shopping outlets, lively bars, and nightclubs. Its famous Little Venice neighborhood offers stunning sunsets seen from the restaurant and bar balconies, constructed within refurbished 18th-century angling homes. The oldest part of the village is the Kastro neighborhood hosting Paraportiani Church, considered one of Greece`s most renowned churches dating back to the 15th century. Among the most identifiable landmarks are the “Kato Mili”, the remaining 5 and a half windmills from a flour mill dating to the 16th century. The primary bus terminal at Fabrika connects Chora to the New Port, Airport, and several of the island`s finest beaches such as Agios Ioannis, Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paraga, and Paradise. Chora represents an excellent choice for those seeking to be near all the action, but it definitely can become crowded and loud during the night.

Staying at the Old Port

a man and woman walking on a beach next to the ocean

Situated as a less crowded neighborhood than Chora in Mykonos Town, the Old Port is still home to numerous excellent restaurants, bars, and nightclubs that remain open well into the late hours. Compared to the tangled streets of Chora, the roads in the Old Port are typically wider with more spaces between structures. There is a small sandy beach here suitable for swimming with lifeguard supervision however it lacks umbrella rentals or beach service, but provides a convenient spot for a brief dip. Many of the bars, hotels, and eating establishments facing the north or east in the Old Port offer magnificent perspectives of sailboats and ships on the Aegean Sea, while sunsets cannot be viewed. Yet, remarkable sunsets can be witnessed at Boni`s Mill, the oldest on the island, and 180Β° Sunset Bar perched high giving a panorama of the town. Mykonos` main bus terminal is located at the Old Port providing connections to Tourlos (New Port), Ana Mera Village, and nearby beaches like Kalafati, Agios Stefanos, Kalo Livadi, Elia, and Panormos. The Sea Bus (water taxi) also makes a stop here before proceeding to Tourlos and Delos Island. Much of the Old Port is restricted to pedestrians, despite some busy driving roads passing through. The Old Port presents an ideal option for those seeking a balanced mix of entertainment and relaxation.

The beach is about 500 meters south of Chora, with most hotels situated on the hill above offering around .5 to 1 km to town. There are a few great restaurants nearby, but the best dining and all nightlife and shopping will be in Mykonos Town about a 10-minute walk away. Much of the walk to town is along a busy road without a sidewalk: totally doable, but difficult in high heels. There are a couple unofficial bus stops in front of some main hotels (Tharroe, Boheme, and Absolut) connecting Mykonos Town (at Fabrika bus station) to Ornos Beach, Platis Gialos Beach, and the Airport. Most hotels here provide free shuttle service to town and all have free parking lots onsite. Hotels here tend to have a romantic, resort-like atmosphere, with gorgeous pools, sunset views, and excellent onsite restaurants and bars. Megali Ammos is a fantastic option for those preferring a more relaxing, pool/spa getaway with occasional access to nightlife and shopping.
