1. Kastro Karima • $$/$$$
Intimate hidden gem on a tranquil street on Old Town’s south side. The chef’s singular touches and beautiful plating at this family-run spot elevate traditional Greek homestyle dishes and fresh seafood from good to excellent. The ambiance is elegant but casual, with live or recorded jazz music setting a romantic and sophisticated mood. Great wine list and impeccable service, too. Reservations recommended.

2. Pidalio Mezedopoleio – $$
This popular restaurant is located on the outskirts of “New Town” Nafplio and focuses on meze dishes and very fresh seafood. The wine and food menus are both comprehensive, with uncommon specials such as boar with plums and quinoa-stuffed squid. Portions are generous and costs are low. The interior is cozy, with seating that extends to the sidewalk outside. Certainly worth the 10-minute walk from Old Town.

3. Alaloum – $$
This venerable tavern offers immense helpings and a wide ranging menu comprising Greek classics, grilled meats, freshly caught seafood, pastas, and salads. The assistance is both rapid and cordial, and the house wine surpasses most. Excellent value for money. Situated on a tranquil, narrow roadway between the Church of St George Square and Acronafplia Hill, with a second location adjacent to the marina on Boumboulinas Street.

4. 3Sixty – $$$
This gourmet grill and wine bar is attached to a luxurious hotel with the same name, providing an ideal setting for a special occasion or simply a break from traditional taverna options. The decor is trendy and high-class, with ample seating indoors and outdoors. The menu selection is somewhat restricted, combining modern takes on traditional Greek dishes and Greek interpretations of international cuisine. Good wine selection and cocktails. Note that live music plays at the bar most nights, and the volume can get loud by the end of the evening – those seeking a quiet night should consider alternative locations. Run by a family, and family-friendly in the traditional style. The atmosphere is warm and cheery, with handwritten menus and kids’ drawings adorning the walls – and the service is friendly and attentive. The menu follows a standard taverna format, with highlights like drunken chicken and stuffed sweet horn peppers. Reservations recommended for bigger groups, particularly in the height of summer.

Excellent gyros and souvlaki in the core of Old Town. Though they specialize in grilled meats, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices on the menu as well – and delicious homemade fries and chips. 7. Savouras Fish Tavern – $$/$$$
If fresh seafood and alfresco dining near the water is what you’re seeking, any of the restaurants on Boumpoulinas Street across from the Nafplio Marina are far superior to the more tourist-centered ones along the harborfront, particularily Savouras. This locally-cherished family business dating back to 1841 has been passed down through five generations.

8. Koustenis – $
The finest soft-serve in Nafplio. Quick service and great prices. With all flavors made on site, Koustenis offers all the standards, plus nontraditional flavors like fig and mastica. The bargain cost of 1.50€ for a single scoop justifies stopping here more than once. Simple to find along the main pedestrian shopping street in Old Town.

9. Syntagma Square Cafés • $/$$
While the restaurants that line Nafplio’s central square aren’t the best choice for a delicious dinner, they’re the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or glass of wine as you observe the world go by. Kentrikon Cafe, in particular, located next to the Archaeological Museum, offers cool and comfortable tables under a large, shady plane tree.

The traditional restaurant, centrally located just off Syntagma Square, is excellent for fresh salads along with a good assortment of vegetarian choices in addition to home-cooked dishes like oven-baked lamb, pork, or rabbit stew, seasoned meatballs, and a truly outstanding moussaka. Live music is presented some evenings. Reservations are advised for large groups.

This family-run establishment near the marina dons bougainvillea and offers traditional favorites cooked daily using heirloom recipes. Expect locals and visitors alike to gather here equally, both savoring classic Greek dishes like rabbit or beef in lemon sauce at a fair price point.

12. Harborside Cafés • $/$$
A handful of eateries line the picturesque harborfront in Nafplio and offer an unblocked vista of Bourtzi Castle. None of these places will astonish you with excellent food (the best of the collection is Kontogiorgos), but they’re great for resting your feet and enjoying a drink or coffee with a view. Your best option to secure front-row seats is to arrive around 45 minutes before sunset – enjoy a pre-dinner beverage with a view, and then head somewhere else for dinner.
