The approachable yet impressive collection of antique art and artifacts at the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum was donated to the Greek state by the pair, who were prominent art collectors as well as wealthy industrialists in the early 20th century. Alexandra Canellopoulos was the daughter of a prominent Greek politician who developed into an accomplished art collector actively engaged in elite art circles. Paul (Pavlos) Canellopoulos was also a renowned art collector managing his family’s successful cement and textile businesses.

Housed inside an Italianate mansion from the 1800s originally owned by a prosperous family, the museum`s permanent holdings number around 7000 artifacts ranging in date from 3000 BC to the 18th and 19th centuries AD. Items on display come from various periods in history such as Prehistoric, Ancient, and Modern eras. Examples include statues, busts, jewelry, weapons, coins, inscriptions, and stone or clay vases. Visitors can see the core collection on the ground level; temporary exhibits and some objects from Cyprus, Egypt, Syria, ancient Phoenicia, Persia and Luristan occupy the upper floor. Situated in the Plaka district on the northern slope of the Acropolis, it is about a 500 meter walk from Monastiraki Square and its subway station.
